As others have said lots of practice, but I suggest you try when there is little or no wind blowing first.

Am I missing something? The rails are only to one side of the bridge, presumably the side the lad fell over.
Is it not possible to fall over the other side?
What an ill thought out solution.

Failing to own a propper spike I used one of these:
It is an old fashioned roof spike / nail / bolt / screw 4 1/2 inches long. I predrilled a hole in the stale after fitting a 6" long 32mm waste pipe collar. The collar was force fitted using a mallet and a hot air gun to soften the pipe.
To keep the mop material in place I put a hose tap head rubber washer with a recess and a stainless steel washer between the nail head and the washer so when rammed in hard the head of the nail is below the level of the recessed washer.
To stop the mop head from spinning I filled the hole with Gorilla glue before hammering the nail / screw whatever it is in.
Plastic waste pipe fitted to stale.
ETA. I put a blob of "No more nails" between each material strip as I built up the mop head. This in theory should keep the material in place.

Why have rats get such bad press - I like them.
Alex
My son had 2 pet white rats which were brothers, for a while. I found them amusing and quite intelligent. They were also quite affectionate.
We called them Ronnie & Reggie.

Male, getting on a bit but still with own teeth, interested in canals and boating, seeks attractive female with own boat. Please send photo of boat...
I had 5 teeth rearranged by a traffic bollard when I was 21, (knocked off a motor bike), do I get a sympathy vote?
I know with false teeth I won't get the woman. Having said that Mrs T MK's I & II fell for me, perhaps they felt sorry?

Just bought a copy of this from Amazon. It is a 2012 exact copy reprint of the original dated 1904.

Full of lots of facts and figures, e.g. pertinent to Tring:
" A lock of water may cost anything from nothing upwards. In evidence given in 1892 before Lord Balfour of Burleigh, Mr. Hubert Thomas, general manager of The Grand Junction Canal, stated that a lock of water pumped from the Artesian Well to the Tring Summit of the Canal cost £1. 4s 8d. and a lock from the Cowroast Well 13s 7d., the average capacity of a Grand Junction Lock being reckoned as 56,000 gallons."
So now you know.

I had similar problems last year, Wrote to sally.ash@britishwaterways.co.uk and paul.burch@britishwaterways.co.uk and eventually got the issue solved

Yup - - the decision was taken - - and nobody fought over it
Came down The Ashby last week. On the Battlefield mooring site there is a fence two thirds the way up towards Shenstone from the winding hole, there were boats moored on the Shenstone side of the fence. The Waterways Stoppage notices were only on the section to the south east of the fence, which is now private property.
There is still mooring onthe towpath side but this does make it more inconvenient getting to the railway.
You can thank Tony Robinson et al for the resiting of Richard Plantagent's memorial.

On a car forum I belong to there is a "How to" section where people show step by step how they modify their cars.
I am in the process of making a rag mop, insired by the thread here:
http://www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=45829&st=0&p=849211&fromsearch=1entry849211
I just wondered if such a topic may be of use here?

Whilst battleing our way south, today, on the Oxford, near Brinklow, we were passed, in the opposite direction by Hasty and very good she looked too.

Great photos Laurie
Do you know where the third photo was taken? The raised platform with a chain drive? It seems to ring some bells way back in the dark vaults of my youthtime memories!
A very early sea tractor from Burgh Island?

BBC Met Office say we will have one months rain in 5 days

EA say we will have a drought 'till Christmas
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/drought-may-last-until-christmas-230500242.html
Just come home after a trip up the North Oxford and it is fuller than I have seen for quite a while.
Who is right or wrong?
I am aware that many reservoirs in the Midlands and SE are low, but surely all this rain must help?

- especially as the marina is full of satisfied customers, many of who have been there for centuries
Been there for centuries? hasn't anyone noticed that some of these customers may be dead?

Some sort of back pumping has recently been used to top up Napton Reserviors on the GU / Oxford.
I think from the River Leam but I am open to correction.

Greg, we hired Willow in October 2008.
The main reason being that she was a traditional style boat with, boatman's cabin, separate engine room and "proper" controls, speed wheel etc. She handled beautifully and was a dream to steer. I fancied something different from your average hire craft, she was the first non cruiser stern boat I had steered.
However all the above mentioned shortcomings made the reason for hiring pale into insignificance. The two main issues which upset Mrs T was the stink of diesel, slopping in the engine room bilge, which pervaded the whole boat and the wet-room bathroom. Not very pleasant to have a shower in after others have been in with muddy boots.
If these were addressed Willow would be a gem to hire and if I were you I would keep her.
We now have our own boat now so we are no longer in the hiring market.
Best wishes with your endeavours and I hope you have success.

Whilst on the subject of copper spill rails..........
Just after we bought the boat the spill rail fractured. The cause was a loose filter mounting causing the rail to vibrate. It didn't help that the engine mounts were shot, but that is another story.
Interesting to note however that the pipe has failed not any of the soldered joints.
The fractured piece at the LHS of the photo was done by the RCR engineer to get the pipe out.
