  1. Very interesting and useful thanks. Our current boat is 57ft with a LPG/electric wet heating system and no stove. Being a little asthmatic we certainly don’t want a stove. we liveaboard about half time fairly evenly split over the seasons. Lots to consider.
  2. Thank you that is really interesting and helpful. We are certainly intending to exclude any burning of any kind, diesel, LPG, solid fuel. Absolutely no stove. I agree one of the biggest challenges is maximising insulation without overly compromising space and I shall be exploring g new materials. certainly interested in your thoughts on heat pumps appropriate for these situations.
  3. Budget has yet to be established and is subject to the feasibility, that said I am realistic, this is not going to be cheap and it is possible it turns out to be simply uneconomic! Batteries will be costly but are getting cheaper all the time. As for grid power, some suppliers are much better than others eg Octopus. Also I have bought a crowdfunded share of a large onshore wind farm and am installing solar and batteries at our home which together is sufficient to cover all my electricity needs, home and boat, with some surplus solar to export.
  4. 2 problems I am aware of. First finding a water source heat pump with a small enough output and second to work well I am told by a specialist they need a decent heat demand.
  5. Thanks that is helpful. I’m not sure given the very small interior space that a heat pump would be technically viable or desirable providing I can get the insulation and ventilation right. I am working with a BSS inspector on this. Don’t think it is an issue with the regs.
  6. Absolutely not planning a stove. I meant filtering air from all particulates, notably stoves on the cut! You are right. I have been clear from the start I am starting a feasibility study for a brand new boat. I am however a current Narrowboat owner. 7. I suspect you are right, this may be new territory in the boating world and no I’ve not yet got calcs. I do know the energy draw is very low. Other important benefits include air filtration (getting rid of smoke from stoves), and dehumidification particularly as we are London based.
  8. Thank you that’s very helpful. Apparently I can’t PM you as I am new to this forum. Thanks and I understand the challenges Are substantial, that’s why I am looking into this. I have already done a project on land. If I conclude there is no other way than rely on diesel I shall not proceed! I do accept that in winter I shall not be able to cruise any distance and will be substantially reliant on shore power. That said, my heat demand should be very low if I can get enough insulation and use mechanical ventilation with heat recovery.
  9. Thanks for all the comments, I am new to this forum. To clarify, the proposal is a new build Narrowboat, c45ft length. With a permanent mooring with shore power when required. Part time live aboard, part time cruising, some extended cruises though minimal in winter months. Objective is to fit out to standards as close as possible equivalent to pasivhaus for housing. So, all electric (engine, heating, cooking), high levels of insulation, MVHR with air filtration and dehumidifier, max solar PV. Accessibility for as we age. Examples, contacts, ideas all welcome thank you.
  10. Anyone with experience of building a new, accessible and all electric narrowboat? Just starting feasibility and information gratefully received.
