  1. Hello! Is it straight forward to replace / install a new starter battery to a narrowboat? How do I find out which battery to buy and is there a specific procedure to follow when it comes to removing the old one and fitting the new replacement? Thanks
  2. The surveyor I was talking to said around 85% of the boats he survey's have MIC and it's almost unavoidable these days. He also said it's easy to keep it under control with isopropyl alcohol without having to shot blast the hull back to metal. When the hull is pressure washed before blacking it will remove all of the rusticles, once the hull has dried it needs to be sprayed with isopropyl alcohol all over and especially where the rusticles were and this will kill the existing bacteria instantly. The isopropyl alcohol evaporates/dries within 5 to 10 minutes and it can then be painted with bitumen blacking as normal. If this is repeated every 2 years when blacking it should stop any new rusticles that may form from causing to much damage.
  3. I'm hoping that if the heat from the steam kills all, or almost all of the bacteria before blacking and is then blacked again a minimum of every 2 years it would hopefully keep the bacteria at bay enough so it doesn't cause to much damage. Also a good treatment with IPA at the same time as blacking.
  4. Today a marina said if the hull is blasted with a high powered hot water/steam pressure washer before blacking the heat kills the bacteria, at least until the next blacking is due. A number of hulls on the marina had the MIC rust appearance/pattern just below the waterline except for the ones that were recently blacked.
  5. That is one of my concerns. The recommendation is to first clean with an ultra high power pressure wash then spray with IPA, then apply new blacking. I'm not sure if IPA can get/absorb through any left over bitumen blacking or not, it may be able to.
  6. No, it's only £20 per gallon online and 2 to 3 gallons is enough for the entire hull. Does it permanently get rid of the MIC thought or at least stop it for 3 years until it can be sprayed again during the next blacking?
  7. Thanks. That's what I suspected, the pits although very shallow are silver. I've been told it can be treated easily by high pressure blasting the hull, then spraying with isopropyl alcohol, then reblacking. I can't find anything about this online, have you ever heard of treating MIC this way before?
  8. Evening, this boat has been out of the water for 24 hours. Wondering if these are normal rust patches or microbial/biological corrosion.
  9. They are probably down to around 8mm. I think the aft corners have had strips welded in the past as a precaution but the bow corners are probably down to approx 8mm at the lowest points. Is the sacrificial chine wearing just a minor issue if the rest of the hull is a good thickness without any pitting or corrosion?
  10. Hi, roughly how wide should a sacrificial chine be? Does the attached photo look okay or a bit worn? It's a Liverpool Narrowboat boat! Thanks
  11. This is from canalplan search.. Hop Hole Built by Unknown - Length : 15.24 metres ( 50 feet ) - Beam : 2.08 metres ( 6 feet 10 inches ). Metal hull N/A power of 20 HP. Registered with Canal & River Trust number 75828 as a Powered Motor Boat. ( Last updated on Tuesday 19th April 2005 )
  12. Yes, it was done at the same time. The invoice was in the file from 2014. I can't remember exactly what the invoice said but do remember there being a note about extra reinforcement due to the location of the plates, plus the work costing £900. I'll probably have to go back for a second look.
  13. Hi, sorry if this is a stupid question. I viewed a boat for sale today and looking through the file I noticed it was originally built in 2007 with a bow thruster tube. In 2014 the owner decided they weren't going to use the bow thruster tube and because it caused condensation on the boat, and made access to shut off taps difficult they had the tube removed and 2 plates were welded to the hull openings. Will the extra plates that were welded on be a vulnerability or have any negative effects on the hull? Thanks
