  1. I have spoken to a few boaters and some are saying that my drain channel could.be blocked. Another person said that it's normal.to have water under the engine bay, which I was surprised about I need to get someone to take a look at the engine, just to ensure that all is good with it! The water is in an enclosed area, however I did find some water underneath where the bed was beside the he engine bay which poses a new issue but it's just a small amount and it's just in that area of the boat, once sgsin someone ssid that was normal.but, surely it can't be good for the hull to have water corroding the inside. I was thinking about blacking the steel floor on the inside of the boat but I'm just wondering whether that's necessary, but it's just that it'll be protected if further water makes it way there without me knowing
  2. I got up this morning and there was water in the boat again so that was after it was raining fairly heavily last night There is a stack/chimney by the motor and I guess that is an exhaust pipe but I'm wondering where that goes and whether that it the cause of the water entering the boat?
  3. Yes there is a compartment, so it hasn't spread across the boat which is a real relief! Stupidly I didn't realize until we had stopped after our 20 mile journey so I guess we will have to run the engine and see where it's coming from
  4. Thanks for the help with my recent thread guys, much appreciated. Now encountered an issue! I got up this morning and there was a puddle of oil beneath the engine with water within it too. There must be 40 litres or so there and I have no idea how this has come about as there was nothing there the other day when we drove the boat back from where we had bought it. We had driven around 20 miles or so! Any help would be appreciated thanks guys Tyrone and Agathe
  5. sorry guys I didn't explain it very well we have a continuous cruising licence you can tell I'm a newbie lol Fat chance of getting a reasonably priced mooring nowadays so obviously we have gone for the cheaper option which is inconvenient but we think works out better money wise at least for the inside I have been advised and ordered Jotun Jotamastic 90 which is 79 for 4.55 litres but I think will be worth it to get ensure that it's done properly I don't know what other people have paid per square meter for closed cell foam insulation but we've been quoted around £20-18 per square meter for it depending whether its 25mm or 50mm
  6. Thanks for the tip! Yeah we have a couple of friends with vans and we are going to try and get as close to the road as possible and then put all of the stuff on there when we have a big load of it The battery powered hoover would be good Ill try and find one suitable for tiny particles as alot get clogged up when hoovering building materials One thing I was wondering is if it is necessary to repaint the inside of the boat everywhere or just treating the areas that had rust on them?
  7. Luckily in the bedroom its just portholes, our bathroom will have a couple of portholes either side and then the living area and kitchen has the larger windows I can live with the larger windows, I think we will install some shutters on the inside and have privacy that way and also that can provide a bit of insulation too! I will be doing almost everything myself, I have experience in all trades, but insulation and carpentry are areas I dont have much experience in so this is the reason for me asking about the insulation needed and also as its a boat I was just wondering what is required to have a sufficient amount of insulation inside of a boat. It is different to having a flat/house as things are different and due to the very limited space, there is more focus on maximizing efficiency. The insulation will be the only thing ill get done professionally, at £1800 for 25mm thickness for the 85 sqm internal area, the only issue is that the batons/studs need to be deeper so thats a job that needs doing first!
  8. Ok ill give thetford a try cheers We are doing alright in London workwise, we do like it around hackney as its a nice community but obviously its more crowded on the canal and more crime etc We have a bedroom and a log burner already there so I will try to get the bedroom done first and maybe we will have to have takeaways for a while and we will get a casette toilet so we have that when its inevitably needed Ok thats a good idea, ive seen companies offering windows customized and double glazed but its not cheap so I think going for a cheaper option is certainly best do you really think 25mm would be alright though? I will get the windows double glazed i think as itll surely make the boat more cosy and itll increase the boat when and if we sell it anyway so its also an investment As fo rthe roof the height is a bit of an issue if theres 25mm less head space as im 3 cm shorter than the boat height so itll be tight
  9. Ok got it! I think we will go for the foam as its not as much as i first thought, just the thickness is what I am not too sure about. Ive seen people say that they got 25mm installed and then the companies are recommending 50mm but I think they would want to sell you more as its better for them so Im not sure what you think? Thanks Yeah for me I would treat all of the rust as I is flaking, it does need some sanding and then I can apply a product to it One issue with the batons as I think they are 25mm, the boat is currently moored on the other side of London so I would be able to do visit it until the weekend but the baton thickness could be an issue if the thickness of insulation we want, pretrudes the baton thickness, if you know what I mean Yeah the flooring is relatively new, as for the floor I did want it to be accessible, if there were any issues, so I don't think i will insulate it, in case there is an issue. It was alright at 16.5 k with no hull issues and being a good size and 18 months ago it was up for 40k but it was kitted out but the previous owner bought it 18 months ago and decided not to finish it after ripping everything out so its quite strange but I guess he just felt he didnt have the time or energy to take on the project so I guess it makes sense looking at it
  10. we dont no, itll be hard in getting used to but I think we will manage... eventually. I agree the timing is bad and we have bought a continuous mooring licence Thanks for the advice, yeah for me the rust needs sanding and then treated with hammerite and then we will go from there We would live in half of it as you said. First big thing is the insulation and the sub floor and flooring and then itll be better from there Thanks for the advice! So celotex is the better choice then, and as long as they are sealed properly? What thickness would you reckon? This is something im unsure of! Closed cell foam is 2.5cm or more apparently Thanks! For the vapour barrier, I had no idea about that. From what ive just read, you have to add the foil to the metal shell and this prevents moisture penetrating the insulation right?
  11. Yes I am aware of the standards, for the electricity Ill be doing that but the gas no, even though there are copper pipes for the gas but theyve been disconnected. Also there are pipes for the hot and cold water. In regards to the boat itself, I didnt notice the windows tbh, I think they are large they could be reduced in size I guess or we could remove a couple. I am a general handyman and i work in maintenance so I dont find the work too daunting. But the 5 weeks is to have insulation and the sub floor, walls and ceiling finished. Then doing the wall panels, the floor, the electrics plumbing, will hopefully be started before we move in with some help of course from friends! I'm optimistic! But I know there will be at least a handful of problems along the way for sure
  12. Also some polystyrene has been used! I want to do the spray insulation myself, I have used spray foam quite alot but I know that this is a totally different ball game and its something worth getting done properly as everything else will be done by me!😁
  13. Thanks for the replies guys, these are the photos of the boat The boat is currently half stripped, 60% of the boat is currently insulated with fibreglass insulation as the previous owner began stripping the boat and then gave up. It seems a shame to rip out the insulation thats there but I guess in order to do this properly it'll be spray foam then! Is it worth insulating the floor at all, just because spray foaming that may be a problem if the ballast needs attention, And also should i do the electrics after the spray foam insulation? As I was going to leave that to last Thanks guys
  14. Hi guys my girlfriend and me have just bought a 52ft david piper boat and we want to know which insulation to use We have seen that closed cell is the best but the most expensive and also its been hard to get someone able to do the job soon, rockwool seems to be second best, then theres celotex, fibreglass and more... there are just too many We have the money but time is not on our side as we are moving into the boat in the next 5 weeks so needs to be done asap And Oh yh the batons on the inside of the boat are around 25mm which is why I am thinking that maybe its best to use closed cell foam atm as itll mean that the existing batons inside the boat dont have to all be replaced with 50mm batons for example Thanks for your time and we appreciate the help guys! Tyrone and Agathe
