  1. We put an offer in 9n our first boat today and it was accepted. They want a quick sale so need to move quickly. We have done a few hires but still feel fair,y novice znd will probably take ownership before we get chance to do the Rya helmsman course. The boat is currently on the Lancaster canal and we're not confident enough do the ribble link. We're therefore going to move the boat by lorry. We understand the cost to transport is oartly based on distance travelled and our final destination is Nottingham. Can anyone recommend a good place and the ability,to refloat iit? We're happy to spend a week sailing it to Nottingham and canal planner currently says 12 days at 7hrs a day from where it is now.
  2. Hi Steve- I am a new user and haven't posted 10 times yet but want to ask you about colwick marina urgently and can't post a reply on your Colwick post or message you yet. Are you able to message me please. Apologies for hijacking this post but I don't know what else to do.. We bought a boat today (subject to survey) and we want to moor near Nottingham as our daughter is going to ntu next year. It needs to be easy and safe to access for her by public transport as a bolt hole if student life gets too much for her as she is a quiet girl who doesn't like noise. Looking for local advice. Eeston is full qnd Redhill can squeeze us in. Castle aren't taking on new boats due to the aqua iata take over and renovation. Can you help us please
  3. We think we have found our first narrowboat (hurrah). It has had a Hull survey recently but the marina's (near Garstang) hard standing prevented the surveyor having a good look at the baseplate. We want to get our own survey but really keen to get the full Hull looked at as it's been pit welded on the sides and blacked ready for sale. Can anyone recommend somewhere suitable to have it pulled out and a good surveyor to look at it please?
  4. Yes that's right. Just haven't got the lingo right yet and influenced by ringing marinas and asking for leisure moorings
  5. Hi We're looking for out first boat and initially until we retire we will be leisure boaters. We ideally want a cassette loo but if we end up with a pump out what's the advice on emptying if we only stay on it at weekends. Do we need to pump it out every time we stay on board or would we be OK waiting till the tank was approaching full? How smelly would it get if it was a couple of months between pumps outs or are we better steering clear or converting the facilities to cassette yo meet our needs better? Thanks
  6. Thanks everyone. You've convinced me we're too novice to take this on.
  7. We are looking to buy our first narrowboat and have been to look at a sailway which is 7 years old and about 70% finished. Two area of concern for me 1. Owner had boat paintwork taken back and reprised. We could see patches of rust coming through and also there were signs of the original colour in places. Should we be worried about the rust or is that something that would get sorted by the painter? We would have it hand painted. 2. Boat was surveyed a month ago and sale fell through. One of the issues which the seller will fix is that the drainage holes in the gas locker are too low. 3 adults stood in the well deck today had the holes under the water and water trickling in and that's with no water in the tank. Broker says this will be fixed, current holes sealed, holes drilled higher up and gas bottle mounted higher on paving slabs in line with the new holes. Should I be worried about this? Will a fix to the holes make them watertight? How do I know the boat is floating evenly in the water and doesn't need a change in ballast? Is there anything else I should be concerned about here? Quite a bit of rust in the gas locker that the broker says is treatable. We will obviously get our own survey as well but don't want to buy a doozy especially as we're still learning about the maintenance side having hired a few times. Thanks
