  1. I had assumed that all three were at rest/transfering the load but you're right both the stumpie and canal boat have full sails. Rick-n-Jo's photo appears to show wide beams which should be more stable, but I still wonder if a narrowboat may be rather unstable with a sail.
  2. I got the picture from http://www.johnmaggs.co.uk/ rather than scanning the picture from book etc. I see they sell prints from Cooke's etchings
  3. In the edition I have it's on page 6. Hmmm a bit out of my league. My first thought was that they would be a bit precarious.
  4. Yes it is, only just started reading it, interesting book.
  5. I came across this picture in a book I'm reading about Sailing Barges... The caption reads 'An early stumpie barge and two canal boats, one of them setting a square sail, on the Thames at Nine Elms, from an etching by E. W. Cooke'(my italics) was it a regular thing to have sails on narrowboats?
  6. I can't get around the tank to see where it is. Do you know the name of the sealer and do you know if it safe for drinking water? It could be a solution
  7. Thanks muchly for all your replies I can only get to the front of the tank so it looks like I'll have to get the it out and replace it, which will involve either taking out the bulkhead (including built in TV/Radio cabinet) or cutting up the tank which I favour, even though it would have to come out in 3 pieces and the new tank would have to be 2 tanks at least. I was thinking about using the pieces of the old tank/s to make a new one to fit more closely the shape of the bow which would give us a bit of storage space. But then thought could I (my dad) weld a piece of steel across to make an integral tank, would this be possible? The front deck has 25mm box section bracing/supports under it, would it be ok to use the deck floor as the roof of the tank. Also when I was doing a search looking for pros and cons of ss, polyprop tanks, and integral Gary had posted that the assosciations his firm belongs to discourages integral tanks, Why? Any thoughts/advice Dave
  8. I don't believe it is, it's dripping from under the connections but the water appears to be coming from further under the tank. I might be able to locate the leak by using a mirror around it but repairing it will be tricky unless its near to the front edge as there is not much space and only 2 inches clearance underneath. I'll have to nick Ange's compact when I investigate further on Tuesday.
  9. Truly manna from heaven. I'll pm you. Thanks everyone for your input. Proves again what a fantastic resource this forum is.
  10. Thanks for the links - I did think 90hp was a bit OTT! There are no lister stamps or other markings does this mean C-Power just took a Tractor engine and marinised it, and will I be able to get spares from my local Ford agricultural dealer?
  11. Have received the surveyors report this morning and although he has some info it's not very much so hopefully Forum members may be able to help. The surveyor says "The engine is a Ford diesel engine with Bowman conversion. This has a C-Power Marine plate on it. Engine number D871067, Ref number 5507. This is a 3 cylinder naturally aspirated engine believed to be 3295cc and approximately 90hp . . . . . . This is an unusual engine installation, these engines were primarily designed as a robust agricultural engine." If anybody has any information about what model this engine could be it would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Dave
  12. I think that about sums it up, there was nothing onboard and nothing offered by the brokers, but I will ask the brokers if there was any info left with them. The surveyor has investigated the engine details and believes that it was from a Tractor, I'll post an enquiry about it. As we travel around we'll build up a manual for her but obviuosly a lot of the original info will have been lost ,which is a shame
  13. Cheers Thanks for that hopefully i'll be able to get a manual from them
  14. Received the surveyors report in this mornings post, Gearbox is a Newage type 050203 F00309 Ratio 1.6 VR2, what oil should I use?
  15. Excellent, our local outdoor pursuits shop sells these products. Will check them carefully. Ange always has a lighter. Having only hired before we've never had to think about the gear we need on board. Thanks Denboy If it's another make I can post/search for details on here or ask the surveyor.
  16. Don't know havn,t got the surveyor's report back yet. Here's the rest: Check. 2 full and 1 part tin of grease left onboard IIRC. Check. Yes, they put a boat in the water whilst we were there with their ,what looks like, container lift which they drive right over the boat, which when lifted didn't move around to much. 5 windlasses (is that the correct plural) of varying vintages, 2 club hammers and a selection of mooring pins left on board and full set of ropes (Assuming that 1 each fore and aft, 2 centre ropes and 1 spare is a full set and two hoses . We'll bring our 56 trillion million candle power £12.99 B & Q rechargeable torch and hope it lasts long enough to get through Harecastle Tunnel, or do you have to have a fixed tunnel light? Yes the tank was virtually empty, I am going to take 2 or3 jerrycans of red with me, I've been worrying about having to manouvre into marinas to fill up so want enough fuel to get me to an easy filling place. Something else I thought of, the front cover is canvas, what's the best stuff to treat it with. Thankyou I have a strong suspicion we will
  17. Thanks for your suggestions I'll get them to charge the engine battery and take some de-ionised water with me. It's raw water cooled, just got to remember where the cocks are. Check Fuel filter added to the shopping list Check Re gearbox oil - is EP90 ok? I assume there isn't a marine version. I think the pump out tank must have been flushed out, the surveyor checked it was working. We looked (very quickly) at a boat that had a very whiffey tank (unless something had died onboard). I think the engine bilge was fairly clean. Are the BW "Watermate" Key and "Handcuff" Key regular keys (like the water point keys we've had with hire boats)? There was a couple of Yale type keys on the boat set. Another post to follow shortly - I wasn't allowed to put in as many text boxes as I wanted! Dave
  18. We will be picking up Nb Iona on 9th of Oct and bringing her down to the Coventry area. I was wondering if there is anything we should do bearing in mind she's been on hardstanding for at least 3 months (as far as I know). I was going to change the oil and filter, drain and treat the water tank (what's best for this?) Any suggestions appreciated.
