  1. Or Valley Cruises at Springwood Haven near Hartshill on the Coventry Canal - just up the cut from the junction with the Ashby, and located on the outskirts of that jewel in the crown of Midlands' towns, Nuneaton.

I would just like to second your comments, Valley cruises boats are always nicely turned out and the staff are very helpful and pleasant

Also have to agree about Nuneaton

    Regards

  2. First of all I would like to thank Big Steve for taking the initative and contacting Budgetboats. I think the reply is as comprehensive as could be expected.

Good luck to this business, I hope it goes well. I do think many areas may be in for a big shake up once the Chinese goods start to deliver.

  3. Also I keep seeing 'Web n'walk usb modem' from T mobile - is that what we need to get

I is rarely that a product lives up to it's marketing I would say that the T Mobile USB modem is one of those exceptions. I am more than satisifed with mine.

I got mine from Carphone wharehouse but these do tie you in to an 18 month contract at £29 a month. I understand that better deals are now available, maybe other memebers of the forum can inform you on that.

The deal I have allows for 5G of data per month which is generally much more than I need even with fairly heavy use

I would certainly suggest you have a serious look at it as it is almost taylor tailor made for c.c

    Hope this helps

  4. Looks amazing value. Bit worried about the 21/2 month wait but they want a 30% deposit off you with your order. Unless I've read it wrong.

Would be happier to pay and take one away with me.

The site does say that from mid October will be available from stock.

The site has very few details about the company selling these or about the engines themself.

I note that the text on the cad dawing for the 37hp-43hp engines is all in Chinese, these can be found on the one page PDF document here http://www.budgetboat.co.uk/sitebuildercon...es/27hp32hp.pdf

Interesting but I think I will watch and wait on this one

  5. all this is good stuff, however if the lady really intends to modify her 12V electrical wiring can I suggest she checks <http://www.tb-training.co.uk/> where all will be revealed and the background, including the need for circuit ptotection, etc. is well described.

Tony - your free technical pages are a godsend and full of practical common sense advice - better than several glossy how to build a canal boat books put together :) - thankyou.

May I add my vote of thanks to Tony's site, a great resource much appreciated

The specific link relating to this thread is

    http://www.tb-training.co.uk/MarineE03.html

On a purely practical note The above discussion has reminded of another useful resource which is the Acorn Engineering 'Chandlery and Fit Out catalogue' this can be ordered from here

    http://www.acornengineer.com/show_cat.php?id=248

Amongst other things the catalouge contains useful general and specific information on all the cable they supply

Acorn are another supplier who will sell cable by the metre

    details on pricing here: http://www.acornengineer.com/show_cat.php?id=3

    Hope this helps

  6. Your units for "D" are incorrect. You state D is in "Volt Drop per Amp Per Metre" when actually it is in volts if you work through the maths. (You have assumed 5A (60W) and 24metres length.)

The actual volts drop per metre per amp for 8.5mm2 cable as an example is actually 0.002

I also don't understand what units "C" is measured in. The amps rating of say 8.5mm2 cable will be of the order of 50 - 60 amps. It's still not correct even if it's meant to be the amps rating per strand.

    Chris

    Thanks Chris I'm afraid a

errors creep in when I tried to cut and paste from my spreadsheet, completly dropped one data colum which meant the table did not match up with the Key guide I provided, To use a phrase I don't like My bad.

I have edited my previous post to correct this.

You did raise another important point in that my calcualtions were done based on the manufatures supplied data for the wire I used i.e 8.5mm2 = 63a and 6mm2 =50a. These amp ratings are quite a bit higher than for normal 'Auto cable' and are more in line with 'tri-rated' cable values. I personnaly think it is wise to obtain and use the manufactures specifications whenever an of accurate calculation is required, however if the data is not available then I tend to use rule of thumb values and then step up one cable size.

Again thanks for pointing out the previous error in my table data

    regards

  7. I want to buy some "fat cable" :) - 8 or 10mm diameter so I can extend the 12v electrics down one side of the boat. I need about 12m (black & red) but can't find anywhere that sells it in less than 30m or 100m reels.

Can anyone recommend somewhere I can buy it in this sort of thickness - pref. online (but that's not essential if there's a shop willing to post it out to me.)

    Thanks

    Lisa

I use OnBoard Energy in Nuneaton, very helpfull and nice people to deal with

    Not to far from Stratford

I'm happy to recommend them to anyone

Edited to correct above table keys and descriptions as pointed out by Chris w

  8. We are thinking of buying a new narrowboat, 57-60 foot semi-trad. Problem is, we know very little about potential builders, i.e. workmanship, after sales service, financial integrity etc. Can anyone give us any info on:

The New Boat Co Ltd/Aqualine Marine, Hanley, Worcester

    Narrowcraft Ltd/Narrowboat Sales Ltd, Tamworth

The Northwich Boat Company Ltd, Sandbach

    Amber Boats UK Ltd, Evesham

    Thanks in anticipation,

    Mike Hands

    Truro

I believe Liverpool Boats have the Crick Boat show up for sale down (or up) at Braunstone Marina , not sure if this is a semi-trad or not, can be contacted at

    Quote from Liverpolol boats site

    "AVAILABLE FOR IMMEDIATE DELIVERY

58' Fully Fitted 2007 Crick Show Boat. Contact Braunston Marina on 01788 891373"

    Hope this helps

  9. A couple of days ago I was shocked to hear that Eugene Baston had decided to leave BW. I resisted the urge to say anything just then, as the news was not completely "public" at that time.

Now, it seems that the cat is out of the bag, with a detailed report and tribute appearing as "Breaking News" on Narrowboatworld website."

Good luck to Eugene in whatever he takes up. I think he has done a difficult job very well.

Regards to him and his newly expanded family

  10. With main batteries at the back and one battery at the bow for the thruster, how is this connected for charing. I assume an isolator for both main and Thruster battery. Is the Thruster battery just fed via a fuse from the main batteries through the thruster isolator? Then just control cables from thruster to stern.

    David

I was advised that a common solution to the thick cable problem associated with charging the bow thruster battery is to use a dedicated charger plugged into the 240v mains. A suitable charger is something like the Victron 12v BLUE power 6A waterproof charger.

    Hope this helps

  11. I think it's worthwhile doing the locks from Saddington through to Kilby, or at least to Newton Harcourt. It's a very pleasant patch and usually busy enough to go up/down with another boat. To my mind one of the finest moorings on the whole system is at Newton Harcourt. Wonderful views over the old church and Whiston Hall. Sun sets just right to provide a fine view from the side doors! No pub though, which just proves that nowhere is perfect.

Have to agree with all of that. I was only thinking of the time factor, it's a lovely stretch which I walk quite often.

I did forget to mention that their is a turning point part way along near Cranes Lock which, if I remember correctly, is the 5th lock along from Fleckney.

Note: Fleckney chip shop closed Monday lunch time

  12. Be aware of the Lock opening times at Welford and Foxton, lest you end up arriving at Welford locks after 3pm with only the motorway service station to go to! Though I assume by "summer" you aim to go in the next month or so, and so will have the longer opening times.

Just for clarification, did you mean Lock opening times at WATFORD and Foxton ?

    Regards

Tafkam-Have you tried the route out on CanalplanAc, free online route planner at

  13. We are hiring a narrowboat this summer, and although we have been cruising before with parents and family, this will be our first trip 'in charge' as it were.

We're hiring from Calcutt near Napton, and have been looking at heading across to Braunston and up to at least Market Harborough on the Leicester branch of the GUC. We are looking to be on the move for between 6 and 8 hours a day, with hire from Saturday 3pm to Saturday 9am, so essentially 6 full days. A few questions:

    1) How far might we be able to get up the Leicester branch? Is Kilby Bridge (bridge 87) feasible? What about if we also want to spend some time at Market Harborough?

    2) Is the Welford arm worth a detour?

    3) Any recommendations for overnight stops, and maybe lunch stops near pubs/shops as appropriate?

Any comments and advice warmly welcomed

    Thanks

    Michael

The leg from Buckby down to Foxton is nice and after the Watford flight is 20+ miles lock free with plenty of mooring spots

Take a trip up the Market Harborough Arm, The Harborough basin is a good spot to rest up and replenish stocks as it is only a short walk into town. You can moor just outside the basin or pay £5 (I think) to more inside the basin.

The leg from Foxton To Harborough is lock free but has one swing bridge (waterways key required)

The trip up to saddington turn may be worth while but if you continue through the tunnel you have 12(?) sets of double locks down to Kilby bridge with very few mooring spots and, obviously, the same number of locks coming back. If you do decide to go through Saddington tunnel then a good spot to pull up is at bridge 73 where it is just a short walk into Fleckney which has a chip shop, chinese take away, Co-op supermarket and a post office/convenience store. After Fleckney its all locks.

If you continue past Kilby heading towards Leicester then it is worth noting that from Kilby on all the locks have anti-vandal locks on so, again, a key is required.

    Diesel can be obtained from

Foxton (although it is sometimes difficult to get near the pump)

    and

Debdale Wharf (between Foxton and Saddington)

No Diesel is available from Market Harborough, although other services are available

No Diesel is available from Kilby

I also understand that Diesel is no longer available from North Kilworth as it appears the yard is shutting down (Pleased to here differently if anyone knows the latest position at North Kilworth)

Whatever you do have a good trip

    Regards

  14. Hello,

Thanks for looking at my first post!

I'm new at this boat thing and looking at buying a boat in the east midlands.

Who would I choose to use for a survey and valuation. What company etc and who should I avoid.

    How much does it cost?

    Any help much appreciated!

I used Paul smith of Narrowboat Surveys who is based in the midlands, no problem in recommending him

  15. This is the official trial DOWNLOAD.

Save it somewhere then run it. (You can virus scan it first if you choose!)

I have used Winrar for years without a problem.

As garry says the official site is www.rarlab.com

Here is the first part of the Trend labs report

    "A WinRAR-lose situation

June 20th, 2007 by Trend Micro

If users wanted to download WinRAR, the popular archiver tool to process RAR and ZIP files, where would they go? Chances are, they’d type in the name of the tool itself and just add .com (www.winrar.com) in their browser’s address bar. Unbeknownst to them, however, the said site is not the official site from which the legitimate tool could be downloaded–that would be www.rarlab.com, actually.

TrendLabs has just received reports on how unsuspecting users could end up downloading malware, instead of WinRAR, onto their systems. When they try to click on the “Free Software Downloads” button in www.winrar.com (as seen below), they would be led to another page where they are prompted to click on “Download Winrar”.

More of the report can be found at

    http://blog.trendmicro.com/index.php?s=win...utton=SEARCH%21

  16. Steve

The .rar format is just a compressed file (of a .pdf document in this case)

You just need a simple 'uncompressor' - Winrar is available as a free download here: http://www.winrar.com

The file is not dodgy at all...

    Allan

    IMPORTANT!!

DO NOT download the version of winrar from

    english.ircfast.com

This is one of the download sites listed on www.winrar.com

As this contains malware (identified aqnd cleaned by AVG)

I did not try the other download site listed, once bitten... etc,.

    IMPORTANT UPDATE!!

    Do not use www.winrar.com

Read this Trend report for full details

    http://blog.trendmicro.com/index.php?s=win...utton=SEARCH%21

Or do a google search for 'winrar malware'

The correct site is shown in the trend report

  17. Hi

My friend is 6'-4" and hunted around 2 years ago for a shell builder with enough head room, he came up with Stirling which give him about 3" clearance in his sail away. He also has plenty of head room on our boat but we have a 32" draught for the vintage engine big prop so do have plenty of height. So if looking at new/second hand good head room is available but it would be a case of asking the builder/vendor.

    david

Liverpool boats have a quite pronounced bow in the roof which gives plenty of headroom for someone of 6ft 5"

  18. I am in the second day of trying out my new T-Mobile 3G Usb modem. So far have only been able to connect via gprs at 56k but have not yet found a suitable spot to connect at faster speed.

Package costs approx £30/month for 18 months (through carphone wharehouse) with a 3Gb monthly allowance.

very neat little item and installed on windows without any problems, software for windows installs itself directly from the sim card.

Any tips on finding good areas to access 3g on the canal system?

  19. It seems that I might need an Isolation Transformer.

The one I have my eye on is the Victron 230V 3600W p/n SDIT0036000.

From what I've seen on the forum boat community there appears to be a small amount of indirect trading going on between boat owners and suppliers who are both members of the forum.

Before I start ringing around Victron agents, etc, are there any discount arrangements between supplier members and boat owner members ?

I appreciate that this might not be allowed by the forum rules and I've no wish to compromise this, but perhaps any suppliers of Victron equipment might like to PM me ?

At the end of the day, Victron will get the business, but I might as well put the business the way of a member rather than a stranger.

    Hi Leonara

I have sent you a personal message with details of a boxed Victron Isolation transformer that I will not be using, hope this helps

    regards Reg
