  1. Don't really know what I'm talking about but I was told that a bigger alternator puts sufficient stress on the engine (sure stress is not the right word) that you can run in neutral.

The alternator will only be under any load if the battery's demand it, no matter how big the alternator.

Running an engine under load is an old wife's tale - post 1965(?) - with the introduction of modern engines and lubricants.

  2. Ive had gas, 12volt 3 times and mains fridges. As a liveaboard i would prefer gas. I have recently sold a 12volt model and bought a mains model. I have looked at the draw of both and whilst running the mains one only draws half an amp including the inverter more than the 12 volt models did. I do have a very good quality inverter so through a cheapo stirling its not so good. for me its a no brainer Ill be staying with mains stuff at about 20 percent of the purchase price and obtainable in any town on any day instantly.

I would agree with all of that - very little difference except for the initial purchase price of the fridge.

  3. It will only become an issue if you find you are running out of electrical power overnight.

If you have a small consumption and travel a few hours every day the alternator will be quite adequate.

  4. We were on Sutton Broad last night. Just moored in Wroxham now doing a spot of shopping.

Just found out that although Nitty Gritty is the same boat as ours their arch must be slightly different as we managed to sneak through Wroxham bridge but they couldn't get through!

Some passers by got some good shots if them hand balling it back out mind.

Could be the difference in Ballast Beer

  5. Sorry, Please and Thank You.

First of all an apology for forgetting my manners in the original post - no excuses, just carelessness I'm afraid.

Secondly, please forgive me for that misdemeanour.

Finally, a big thank you for the advice regarding Wesley windows, I had a look at their website earlier and it all looks very interesting, thanks again.

I did manage to fit one from B&Q but I had to cut down the fibre glass base to its minimum.

it just went in after scraping off the foam insulation in the roof at one point.

Height is always going to be your enemy in a narrow boat.

  6. I need to park a car for a couple of days safely near Denver (and the sluice) whilst we go boating with some friends on the River Wissey.

    Any suggestions please.

Having looked at Google maps it looks like Hilgay is your best bet and its a nice village

  7. Forgive the possibly daft question. New boat ready soon. Need to buy TV. Do we need to buy a 12v one or normal 240v. Boat has landline and inverter. I assume that we need 240v TV. This will plug in normal when we are moored and plugged into landline. Then when moored out whilst cruising, we switch on the inverter which changes the voltage from 12v to 240v to operate the television.

Can someone confirm either way whether right or not in assumption or explain to me how the inverter works and what volt TV we need to buy.

If 12v tv is needed, how does this work when plugged in to landline?

    thankyou

    Kim

    Hi

You can have either 12V or 240V TV but it will plug into different sockets.

At 12V (special two pin socket) it will run directly from your battery's - charged by your engine or a charger when plugged into a land line.

240V (13A socket)will have power directly from the land line, you should have a selector to switch the 13A sockets to the inverter when traveling.

  8. A simple group of questions,

Has any one managed to navigate the ribble crossing on a 58ft 10ft wide beam.

She has a 75 beta will that be able to cope with the tidal crossing..

What other equipement will we need.

Are the locks manned with lock keepers.

Our aim is to get to Lancaster then over to glasson dock.

Are we dreaming or is it possible.

    I wouldn't have thought so.

The link is very narrow and very shallow, the locks are wide but 57' narrow boats have to reverse into the last set of locks. Not easy as there is very little room due to silt build up.

To be sure contact CArT in Wigan

  9. Hi All

Open to suggestions with this one, Having recently replaced my domestic battery bank with sealed cells (Lucas 110AH) but leaving my existing start battery as was (non sealed) my question is this.

How best to set the jumpers for battery type. There is only one set of jumpers (sealed, open, gel etc) and I now have two battery types connected?

I suspect the answer will be I need to buy another sealed cell for starter and set jumpers for same?

Or what might an interim solution might be?

Again open to offers and sugggestions!

  10. I'd say as a very rough starting point, and based on not knowing how much telly you watch, how much you use the laptop, and how big the fridge is:

    - Fit LED lights throughout

    - 300-500W of solar power with MPPT controller

    - MSW inverter of 1000W or so

    - get the telly, laptop and fridge running off 12V

The reason I've put 1000W MSW inverter is for power tools eg drill, jigsaw. The reason I've said MSW rather than PSW is that PSW is much more expensive, and the items you might need to use on it will be okay on MSW.

Please note, these figures are really just a very rough first estimate though.

Can any one convince me that the power consumption of a 12V fridge and telly is significantly better than the 240v models

  11. Hi, soo like most peoples boats the front of the boat has a plastic tent like cover.

My boats only 35 foot and the plan is to have a toilet and sink in the front, i tried making it with Marine ply and just made a mess, (First time using my dads jig-saw) blink.png so im going to get someone to make it with steel.

Has anyone done this and know does anyone who can do this kind of work? How much do you think it would cost?

    Like this

But don't forget you will have restricted head room. Wooden cratch's tend to have a 6" lift to increase head room.

  12. Can't remember the exact dates specified, but I think we are now into a period where Vince Moran is the acting CEO until the new man is in office.

So, yes, I believe Robin Evans is now largely out of the picture.

    (But I may be wrong!)

Incidentally, continuing a trend we had previously noted where Robin Evans appeared informally at a Stoke Bruerne event last year, and was chatting freely to boat owners, Tony Hales was there yesterday for the gala weekend, and doing similar.

So they do leave their ivory towers some times, and when they do turn up at things, it is often quietly and informally, and not as part of some publicity exercises.

I'm still convinced he will reappear as a director of the BWML.

    See if I'm not wrong

  13. There comes a time in every engines life when it is finaly worn out.

Twenty years for any engine seems to have been a good life.

The time has come to totally rebuild the little beauty and look forward to another 20 years of use.

    Alex

  14. But that doesn't explain what occurs if an engine is overfilled with oil. What happens, I suspect, is too much splashing and some getting past, as well as making more work for the crank.

Could it be that the lack of or blockage of the engine breather - pressurising the sump and blowing the oil past the rings into the cylinder head?

What engine is it and where is the breather?
