  1. I also considered CraftInsure but they wanted to charge me additional money for having my new boat transported across country and insuring it when craning it it.

I went with Haven Knox-Johnson and they quoted a better price AND included all the above at no additional charge.

A friend of mine insured with HKJ and the story of what she was put through when her boat was burnt out would turn your hair white.

  2. Ex Doctor who Peter Davidson used to own a boat when he eas married to the blond woman with the squeaky voice - can't remember her name. Saw them at an IWA National Rally - think it was Titford Two.

The landlord in Minder used to own/live on a boat.

  3. If I can remember correctly, 10 inches would be quite wide. I dont recomend walking it.

Our top plank on Fulbourne is 11 or 12 inches wide, we have a copy of the construction drawing for a town class motor which shows them at eleven inches.

I walk the top planks a lot without problem. The main thing to watch out for is to ensure that they are well tied down, stepping onto a loose plank can be scary!

  4. Hi all,

I am by no means computer illiterate! But! How the XXXX do I add a photo to a posting that I am replying to, when I've posted my photos onto flickr?

I've created a flickr account, uploaded my jpg's, followed all the instructions that I can find on this forum, but!!! nothing works, I click on insert image and my cursor disappears, nothing else happens (

    Think I've worked it out.

Open up your photo in Flikr then click on the 'all sizes' button above the photo.

When the new page opens scroll to the bottom of the screen to the 'Grab the photos URL' box.

Copy this URL then paste it into the box that appears when you click the 'add image' button on the reply page.

    Worked for me

  7. Hi folks

I am at that stage in the year when the family are planning/discussing where to go for our next narrowboat 2 week holiday.

We have done the Llangollen (1 week), Rochdale (1 week), 4 Counties (1 week), 4 Counties (2 weeks + the Caldon) and this year did the Cheshire Ring and a trip up to Chester and back (2 weeks).

I am not too bothered about the Leeds & Liverpool canal as I live nearby and know many of the interesting places already. So, north covered, the next accessible and completely new trip for us would be the Leicester Ring. It sounds interesting, but my research is telling me not to go anywhere near Leicester by boat. I have not been to Leicester and know nothing about the place.

This is where I hope you friendly folks can help me, as I know some of you will know the area or will have cruised through the area. Is it safe? (I have 2 children), I seem to be reading lots of negative comments, are the problems (and what are they?) still around or are the reports out of date? I don't want to spend a lot of hard earned cash on a holiday that we will worry about, I want to enjoy it safely!

Any help, comments, advice, tips, etc. (you know what I mean) would be most appreciated. :D

Thanks and happy boating - Mark.

We did the Leicester ring in 2006 in a fortnight in the Hottest weather I have ever boated in, it was an easy two weeks which included doing the Asby Canal, the trip down to Coventry Basin and a side trip to Calcutt. Not my favourite ring but enjoyable all the same. Also worth doing the Welford and Market Harborough arms, Market Harborough if only for food shopping. Pubs in MH not great so we prefer stopping at Foxton which has a good selection

Have boated through and stoped in Leicester many times without a hint of trouble. Our usual stopping point is at Birstall just North of the centre. If you find the time visit the National space centre and adjacent pumping station museum which are next to Belgrave lock, taking the boat up the short arm below the lock was a highlight of the trip so long as you don't mind unprotected wiers!

The River Soar is a delight, the Plough at Normanton being my favorite watering hole, they also have a sister pub at Barrow, Kegworth has the worlds slowest Indian Restaurant.

  8. i want to know if i have to pay british waterways to moor my boat . i have a bw licence and pay a private landowner to moor off his land on bw canal. they are taking me to court for unpaid charges . but i dont think there is any legisslation to really enforce it any thoughts. thanks

Not sure about the actual date but there was a test case taken through the courts a few years ago where it was proved that BW had the right to charge for 'end of garden' moorings.

  9. I cant seem to find our site but were now paying £391 a quarter for residental mooring. As i said... the site is poor but it does have electricity.

    I and

Sounds very cheap to me especially if it is a 'true' residential moring. I and many peope I know pay more than that for non-residential moorings.

At the other end of the scale there are residential moorings in Central London that cost over £7.000 a year!

  10. We are just wondering whether to buy any eco-fan for our narrowboat. What do you think of these fans and where is the best place to buy them?

Bought one (two bladed) for the girlfriends 50ft NB a few years ago and it made an amazing difference in that it got heat right to the other end of the boat as well down to the feet.

  11. Funny, but I took a bit of trouble taking the picture of Wud in Bottom Lock once again.

Went up on the Bridge, told Barney to walk back, and then stand (which I did from a distance, and he obeyed  so with the sun glinting I thought I'd get one of the best pictures I have there, and look ........ it's crap :smiley_offtopic:

Taking pictures this time of the year can be a very rewarding or frustrating experience.

In this case you have the worst circumstances for confusing a digital camera, a bright white boat, a darker background and lots of shadow -

To get the best out of a photo like this you need to position yourself to avoid getting too much shadow in the picture and, as someone else has stated, taking the reading from the background rather than from the white boat.

  12. I need some ply to make a box for the foredeck/hold area and, since the last ply that I bought delaminated in under a week, I thought that advice from the forum would be a good thing. I am thinking of something in the area of 3/8" thick. I have heard that "birch ply" is used as is "marine ply". Which of these is best for standing up to the rigours of the great outdoors for some of the time. Are there any other types that I should be considering?

    Nick

Have bought excellent (but v expensive) marine ply from:

  13. Not just tunnels:

The Rochdale Canal.. For a passage through the motorway crossing between locks 55 and 56, the 'Floating towpath' bellow the motorway must be moved by BW.. It was envisaged originally that this could be done by boaters but it has been found that the local kids enjoy taking it on a voyage so it is locked in place more securely these days.

When booking your passage make sure you make it clear if your boat is greater than 7ft beam and mention the above towpath, they have been known to forget.

I thought that I had read that the floating footpath had been removed because of Vandalism.
