One of my four (newly fitted in August) batteries has exploded, and i'm trying to figure out what the cause might be, principally to prevent this happening again, and also to work out what i was doing wrong in the first place.
I was advised to keep the batteries on 'trickle charge' whilst hooked to 240, which i have done.
I was away from the boat for a while over Christmas, came back and noticed a foul sulphuric smell as things started to warm up .. (My first concern was that the pump out tank had burst on thawing, so i take comfort in the fact it's just the battery, and not some defrosting "fecal" lollipop as a mate described it)
When i turned the charger off, the smell stopped more or less straight away.
So, a few queries..
* was i wrong to leave the batteries on charge?
* what might have caused the explosion (extreme cold or overcharging?)
* What could i have done to prevent it?
* Do i need to replace all four batteries, and will only new batteries do ?
thanks kind people.. You might have guessed, i'm new to all of this, and i'd heard it was a leisurely pass time !
cheers, Steve x
