A little while back there was on one of the forums a photo of the Kelvin petrol container that is used to prime / supply the carburator with enough petrol to start the engine on petrol before changing over to diesel. Could either the poster or anyone else with a photo of one please get in contact with me. I am after a picture of one with the major dimensions.
Many thanks
Barry Adams
Hi Barry, Although i can't help directly, i might know someone who does! unfortunately, they are currently off on their travels, so might be a week or two. for what Kelvin model is it?

Hey Dan,
We had Wyrd up there in the nineties, and it has 2' 11" ish draught, that was a while ago, and we did cut a channel most of the way but we did it, we did have to leave Meteor at hurleston though after it had an altercation with the lock walls in the bottom lock!!

Dan
Edit to Add,
On the same trip, we had birmingham and midland boats up there aswell, but can't remember which ones!

unfortunately we won't be in the Thrupp area but wishing you all the best with the fundraising, I agree they do do a sterling job, sometimes in difficult situations.
All the best

hi'a everyone! this is the first chat room i've been on,not to savy on the pooter yet. but hello! this is me, been savin for 6yrs, to buy my liveaboard narrowboat, been a mission, only work in a warehouse so wages not top. my major concern is the headroom, i'm 6.2. and i'm going to have about 6k to spend. and just frm what i've googlrd springers are only 5"11? any other tall people in the same predicament?
Hi Fryinpan, welcome to the mad house, we are a friendly bunch, i promise!!
I am 6'3, and there aren't many boats I can stand up in, keep looking around though, you will come across one with headroom, either with deeper hull or taller cabin, but as long as it is in proportion and budget, then all is good, although you may struggle with 6K. Go for a wander round boatyards and brokerages, as you get to see a few at once, you will get a feel of different builders and styles in a more economical way. If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask, there are plenty of people on here with a plethora of useful information, just waiting to pass on!
Another thought is if you are good with DIY and have mechanical experience, look on boatwrecks.com, they sometimes have boats pop up, usually fire damaged but sometimes a bargain can be found, as forum members on here have in the past.

Its (the Giffard Park facility) open again now. The problem was that the local (land based) residents started to dump their excess rubbish (stuff the council would'nt take) outside the BW rubbish point so, BW in their wisdom closed the facility. They put it outside because access to the facility is locked and accessed by a BW key, which most land lubbers don't have.
Not sure how the situation was resolved but it seems to have gone back to normal.
I remember it in the Citizen and MK news a while back, I live in Giffard Park, but don't venture up that end, work and play is in the opposite direction!

I concede I don't know that particular location - but it's often struck me how many such disposal points are accessible to jo public....
if you live near one and your local council is 'picky' about your rubbish type and send around the recycling police....it must be tempting to dump your rubbish at somebodies expense surely...
There was this problem, last year at the facilities at giffard park in Mk, don't know what the outcome was.

Evening all,
Above shade house lock at Fradley there is a sunken wooden hull, on the towpath side, named as "Flycatcher". Does anyone have any information about this boat, Jim Shead doesn't tell much.
Regards in anticipation

Whilst travelling the Grand Union.
A chap chatted amiably to me for 5 minutes whilst I worked a lock single-handed before coming out with: "Do you think the problem of suffering will ever be solved?". I got away without taking a tract.
Another time a bloke chatted to me for while before commenting that for the task in hand, my brain was probably not operating on the right theta level, with more detail I cannot now recall. Ok, I can cope with that.
But yesterday a youth of about 17 came up to me and tried to get me into an extended conversation about my boat. He was very pale and quite visibly continuously shaking but without looking ill. Drugs was my first thought though I have no experience of that culture. He asked for a glass of water and I agreed whilst making it clear he could not come on the boat. As a solitary elderly male I am extremely wary of being "set up". He drank it, returned the pastic cup, and to my great relief, departed. My question is - are there any individuals that are known to be best avoided in this area? (Grand Union Milton Keynes)
just out of interest, where abouts in MK??

Read what I posted, a drunk chap on the roof first of all is not a threat, they have terrible balance - rock the boat and they would fall in. If the kid wasnt drunk and started threatening/mouthing off and then advanced on me and I thought there were serious risk of harm to me or others I would shoot yes. But like I have said before, once the chap had seen the gun and seen I was in no mood for his shenigans I am fairly confident he would be off like a shot for a new pair of trousers and to find somewhere else to hassle people.
A shot gun at 55 ft (the length of my boat) if shot in the chest area would be unlikely to kill out right (with standard supreme game no 6 cartridges). It would be far nicer to shoot at his legs and stop him from being a threat that way. Anything further than 100ft would sting like hell but leave no lasting mark, yes I have been shot at that range. Not fun. Certainly a brown trouser moment! Of course within 20 to 30ft they can be rather messy.
I am absolutely DISGUSTED by what i am reading, i really hope you are writing this to get a rise out of people, because if that is the case, then you can't be serious in what you are putting in print. Whilst i agree about protecting if the need arises, there are other ways, NOT INVOLVING FIREARMS, which have been posted in this thread, but have fallen on what are obviously deaf ears.I like to write on this forum, as it gives me a chance to chat about topics, which i enjoy chatting about, and very rarely, in my opinion write out of turn, however on this occasion, i am compelled to say that, i feel that your type of writing is obviously not welcomed, as it appears you offending people by what you are writing. That is not what boating is about, protection yes, warning shots, and shooting people in the chest, NO. Please go away, i'm sure there are forums in the pulic domain, where you can go and pretend to be Yosemite Sam, and go and jump around firing your guns in the air, in a virtual world of course.

I think there might be diffrent versions of this stove. Some are obviously better than others.
The problem exactly. Anything that is not fool proof is an accident waiting to happen.
there are indeed different types, we had one for our allotment, but the spring on the clamp was cr*p, so we never got a good enough flow of gas. we found adding a bit of cardboard between the canister and the clamp did the job. once the shed had been broken into and the stove stolen, we bought another one from i think B&Q, and that has been absolutely fine. they were both the same price from what i recall. the only down side to these from what i can tell is that they tend to get sluggish when there's only 1/3 or less in the can, so it seems you waste alot of gas

Hi there,
We are looking to get a nabru sofa for our house, we visited their showroom and meticulously looked at every possible scenario of sofa they build, and, being a carpenter, gave them a pounding!!!! i have to say i was very impressed, the structure, for MDF is strong, and the cushions comfy. there is an option for hard and soft seating options, i would go for hard, as the cushions are 8" thick, and IMO, don't need soft webbing underneath them, as over time, they should soften anyway, but when ordering there is the option of them supplying both as the seat base fits in the seat. The only negative i could foresee is the sofa bed matress, it is very thin, we plan to overcome this by purchasing a matress topper from ikea, which is thicker and approx. the same size, and should fold away with it. They will build to any spec, within their guidelines and the biggest thing delivered is the bed mechanism. They give the various options when ordering, for example scothguard and storage boxes, but to be honest, i personally think it isn't worth it, as the scotch guard, as i am led to believe is just out of a can anyway, and can be purchased cheaper elsewhere and being the structure is MDF panels, its almost like compartments are already there so storage boxes take up more, valuable space. we plan to have spare bedding under ours in vacuum storage bags.
If your in the area, the Nabru showroom is about 1/4 mile from the GU just south of Uxbridge on the big industrial estate on the offside.
The only other thing to say is there was a stand at crick which was specialising in Narrow boat sofa beds. Their website wasn't up and running at the time of the show but i'll have a look for the leaflet and try and post more information on it!
Hope this helps

I think the point John's making is that if you're on a motor, it's a lot harder to hear what's being said from the bank- hence the smiling and nodding, rather than replying!
Aah, thought there might be some pun intended, but after a long day at work, my brain was fried and i couldn't work it out!

On the butty rather than the motor was he?
he was indeed on the butty. He was a youngish lad, maybe early 20's, sorry don't know his name!!

snipped!!!
I had a chat with the steerer of Joe, as they passed under bridge 79 by lionheart's, about mid day, a nice guy, who, unlike most, took the time to talk back, rather than just smiling and nodding!!!! it was a great sight to see, I unfortunately missed the others, due to being in bed as i didn't get home from work until about 4 AM.
Wishing all involved a happy onward journey from the waters of MK!!!
