Alan, thanks for the gentle reminder that what seems like yesterday is actually 34 years ago, of course the engine might well have been changed between times!

Judging by other recent posts Baldock, for all it is in a bit of a sad state now, has come off lightly compared with the other ex-FBS campers - Coleshill & Virginis - as it was sold off fairly quickly into private hands still running.

Coleshill and Virginis are in good hands, and will in time be fully restored. I believe Coleshill is progressing nicely, it certainly was last time I saw her.

    Kind regards

Not really an answer to the Thames but we've been waiting at Shardlow for a few days for the Trent to subside. There are boats here that have been here a week or more.

Left today and now moored at Sawley. Moorings almost full, presumably with boats left in until the owners can get back to them.

As an aside, there would be more room if boaters closed up the gaps and shared rings.

    How was the Trent flowing?

  3. I spent most of my time between kings Bromley marina and the far side of rugeley on tickover or out of gear. I don't have a problem with people wanting a slow slow life, but don't hold others up who wish to cruise as close to the speed limit as they wish, pull over and let them pass when safe to do so.

Suppose you're in Preston Brook now!!

Only because there was no one in our way getting back from Castlefield. We were hoping to make Anderton for the night...... ?

Actually we tied up between Hoo Mill and Weston. We were delayed by the autumnal 1mph cruising club.

  5. Its not that bad. Confusion as between Trent lock and Derwent mouth some are red and some are amber. Needless to say I was thirsty so am now moored in shardlow.

Glad you got out and about. Sad that the river is misbehaving. Chucking it down here at Branston. Bloomin' cold wind this afternoon. Lit the fire.

We may catch you up tomorrow. A pub would be good!

  6. I think it looks just fine and if I had the money brinklow would be my first choice of builder. None of this bend a couple of plates round and pull the base plate up to form a bow type of builder. A hull built to swim, which looks right and built to a high standard.

You can't have a Ferrari for the price of a Cortina.

That's what she said when I saw the engine in the boat

There was a guy who did the same with a Kelvin K2 which we very nearly purchased but they then decided to keep it instead. I think this is going to happen more and more as boats sell and people are wanting a lower maintenance turn key engine.

    And we'll all be waiting!!

    Kind regards

    Hi Dan,

Just stumbled upon this post from years back, I was brought up on these boats, my family had them built, so glad to see you are looking after them well and loving them as much as we did, we have albums of them being built if you would like copys sending to you? Hope the transformations are going well must be completed by now. I hope you and your family are loving your time on them as much as I did when I was a kid.

    Kind regards,

    David

The Great Northern used to be called the Navigation which was appropriate as it is on the junction of 3 canals. Don't know why they changed the name because it had nothing to do with the Great Northern rail company which had its meetings in the Sun Inn in nearby Eastwood. The Navigation was a great quirky pub with walls covered in memorabilia.

The pinxton branch of the great northern railway used to run on the line that is now the bypass. Langley Mill and Eastwood station was approximately 100m east of the pub. The railway split at awsworth junction and the branch to derby swung left and crossed the bennerley viaduct, still extant by Stenson's lock and the pinxton branch swung north over the giltbrook viaduct, known locally as 40 bridges.

I think the sun inn meetings were the midland railway. I could be wrong though. I normally am.....

    Hope this helps.

    Kind regards

Is ya boat finished yet old sport?

Aah you guys! Thanks for your kind words.

As a footnote to works on Nightwatch, we installed a new skin tank to a slightly bigger size to the one that was there. Given the complexities of access, we installed as a stand alone tank snug to the swim. This, it turns out wasn't up to the task so we are now installing new tanks on the outside of the swim, to a larger surface area which will assist with a more efficient cooling system.

We are more than happy to deal with the issues and get it right for Martyn.

However. It is raining. So we are currently dodging showers!!

    Kind regards
