  1. The M1 is louder, as are the planes taking off and landing I never said anything about going for a small child.
  2. Thats just it, they dont really bark, only when the are excited for instance, when we get thier leads out. (I'm ashamed to say Alfie does bark at the ducks when we try to drag him past them). But they dont bark as a rule on the boat because it would do my head in.We havent heard any other complaints, and the marina staff have stood outside the boat and couldnt hear them. I hear loads of dogs barking on the marina, and loud televisions and loud music, but to me, thats what this lifestyle is about, being tolerant unless the noise gets really silly of course, then there are ways of approaching people. By the way, I dont want anyone to think we play loud music and have the telly very loud. The loudest thing about is the webasto heater.
  3. someone in a boat 3 or 4 down from us have complained about my dogs barking all the time. We'd only been there less than a week when he 'jumped out' of his boat at us as we passed. Told us we werent welcome, and that no-one wanted us there, that we were low life scum and to 'go off back' where we came from. There have been 3 incidents so far and weve only been there about 5 weeks. He's stared at us and threatened us and tried to get in our boat. I had to physically hold the door closed. Made us wonder what kind of a 'community' we had joined, what if all water folk were like that. Funny though, cos if he can hear them barking all day, he must have superb hearing because they are at work with me about 25 miles away between 7.30 and around 5.30. They do have excitable periods and bark a bit, but surely that cant be classed as niusance noise. You can't stop, and shouldnt stop dogs from being dogs. Live and let live I say, everything in moderation.
  4. not really my cup of tea, a block of flats.
  5. Thank you,erm...sorry, you know what I'm going to ask, how do you do that, is it esy, and will little old me be able to do that? Thank you .
  6. Southwest durham steel, and was fitted out by someone who I think used to work for them. I think it was someone's project, as it was called JMT Project boat when we bought it.
  7. yes, we have no idea where it is, something about with it being hydraulic. We marked the wheel when the rudder was straight, but after a little while, and a few manoevers, it had drifted a full half turn, and trying to get back into Sawley was a nightmare.
  8. Finally got around to taking a pic. This is our new home, 'spirit of dusty' . We moved on around 5 weeks ago. Moored at Sawley. We need to have a rudder guague fitted, and a bow thruster. Its a bit scarey when its windy. Apologies to everyone we held up the first time we took her out, even the impatient people who were tooting their horns at us. If you see us, please wave, and please be patient.
  9. Thanks for this. This is very similar to the literature I found. It looks like the big stick jobbie will be the only way. It didnt help that the water pressure at sawley on the pump out rinse was virtually nil at the time. Oh well oh um. I'll keep checking to see if anyone comes up with something less umpleasant than the big stick, open windows and rubber gloves.

  11. Most dogs I know quite enjoy the sensation of being groomed, and its a bad experience that heas left them hating it. Make him enjoy it, a nice soft brush first, a matt comb is an excellent investement, as it helps to half tease half cut mats out so they dont pull on the skin. Dont concentrate on one area if the dog doesnt like it, but keep sneaking back to it, and always finish off with something he finds pleasuarable, like a belly rub, or behind the back of his ears. You can get rubber brushes from places like P@H to pull the hairs out of the fabric, we use one on the car seats, its a bit of an arm aching excersise, but works well. Or you can get them clipped, like me. Its not always the best fashion look in the world, but mine like being short now, and the amount of time they spend being wet, for me, short is good. Less time brushing them, and therefore happier for your dog? Oh, I have 5 cockers. edited to add, sorry supermalc, looks like i didnt read all the posts before posting.

  13. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum. Sorry if your eating . We moved onto our boat about 5 weeks ago, and so far, most little niggles have been sorted out. We have 2 loos, a macerater (sp) at the back and what I think is a vacuum jobbie in the main bathroom. The first couple of weeks, we only used the macerater 'cos i didn't like the look of the flap thingy in the other. We successfully pumped the loo we had used with the help of a friend for the first time after a couple of weeks, and after that we used both loos. We came to pump out a couple of days ago, and the macerater one seemed to go ok, but the other one, which we think was full, didn't seem to go so well, but obviously, we arent experienced enough to really know. The pipe didn't seem to really 'pump and flex' if you know what I mean, when we were doing the other one, like it did when we did the macerater. Now, 2 days later, the loo seems to be full again, when you flush it, it acts like a bloked loo, throwing bits back into the bowel, and when the little flap thingy is open, it looks all compacted. The loo itself has a little plastic cap thingy at the back behind the seat and lid which comes off, and it says Sealand domestic on it. The 'boat owners manual' that came with the boat says its a Mansfield Traveller, but I'm not sure this is correct, because a lot of the boat's bits and bieces and details are actually different from the manual. Can anyone ofer any advice as to how you clear any blockages, we dont know if its still full, and we hvent actually emptied it properly, or if its blocked right up near the loo itself. edited to add, ive pulled a few bits off, and found its a sealand traveller lite 110. Ive found some info, and apparently we should be using a special kind of loo roll. Is there anything that will help to breakdown and dissolve the andrex that we have used, as I assume tht this must be a contributing factor if not the complete cause.
  14. My sentiments. I hope they get their just rewards.

  17. We used RSL also. We found them very helpful. As Lady Muck said, for us, the most difficult bit was getting a dry dock and a surveyor at the same time. We now have to find a dry dock for a few days to get the hull done. For me, that seems to be the most difficult bit, specially living aboard.

  24. Well why not stick it land fill then. It isnt all shipped abroad, we have a steel industry right here on our doorstep. I work in the metal recycling industry too. There is a need for metal recycling, if there wasnt, the industry wouldnt exit.
