    That other thread was about my other boat. Different alternator different boat. The alternator on the bmc is the a127 lucas (copy). That's pretty common. No idea how it broke, boat is over 40 years old - these things happen. Maybe some damage hairline fracture some vibes! As well as the 2 top supports there's the 3rd lower post - which has the 4th adjustable part via a bracket. The below image is before it broke - its the piece below the water temp with the red wire). The top (as you look at it) bolt goes through a bolted on 90degree bracket - which is the engine diagram in my manual part 64 "bracket for alternator". Theres a load of washers needed to help things line up. This alternator is a fair bit bigger than the original - though has been place 4 years plus.

    Thank you so much. Probably saved me hours of looking. Instead I shall spend hours thinking about wether it's a DIY job or not. Then attempting it- it going wrong - and then spending weeks finding someone with the right skills. All good stuff! Thanks again.

    Hi BMC 1.5 (note this isnt my engine image in this message but rather a general one as I couldn't get a decent one of mine in situ) The part circled I need help with. It provides part of the support for the alternator. Its unfortunately broken off, having looked carefully today it looks like it's part of a piece- rather than the engine block itself - probably do do with the coolant loop but also has the pulley for the alternator belt. Checked my manual and can't see it on there. if anyone knows what it's called and if it's a sourcable replacable part I'd be glad to hear the details. thank you Mark
  5. hi I'm replacing the alternator on my current project - but having removed it the part number on it doesn't seem to bring up anything. EI20C4 Its a Mitsubitshi 3E engine. If anyone has any ideas or can suggest a replacement I'd be grateful. Ideally the same-ish unit size as space is tight. many thanks Mark

  7. Its a 32ft springer I feel a bow thruster is somewhat overkill. The boat has many a mystery pipes been slowly working through them. But a pair of the hydraulic pipes go up into the " control " pedastal/box - which has a hissing gear lever - back neutral forward. There is also a 2nd lever that controls the revs (though as mentioned it only revs when in neutral) The only way we have been controlling the speed is by taking it out of gear, gliding a while. Its doesn't go crazy fast no faster than any other boat. Have a rev counter and it stays around 900rpm whilst in gear.
  8. I'd love to have a ferkle, and even a gander. I suspect as mentioned above its been erroroneously plated over. Oh the joys 😂 Ferkle is a good name for a boat. With this boat I'm on unfamiliar canal being on the Grand Union near King's Langley (heading - slowly south, well at top speed in small bursts) if there is a decent beaching location or similar in the general area be good to have a look whats going on.   9. Thanks Yeah anti ventilation plate out of the way there is another metal plate in the way stopping me getting my arm down to the propeller. It doesn't seem to want to move etc
  10. A couple of hours cruising and she topped out at 85c- so I think the main issue with the water pump etc is sorted atleast for now. Following on I think the prop is having issues as the boat struggles under load (loads of smoke - enough to cause second looks etc - adding the fact she only goes 1 speed im sure to be terrorising other boats) So, have a look at the prop because that might explain a few issues. Firstly it does turn by hand but is very stubborn. Into the weed hatch.. its the bolted down variety but get in and I am able to remove the foot type piece. Haha I think now to look at the propeller ...nope there's another piece of metal blocking me getting to propeller... It does have a bit of a gap as I poured some water in and it drained away. Answers on a postcard Thanks again for your knowledge and wisdom.
  11. Thanks Tony I knew I would be caught out with needing more info. Not an upto date picture as I have put in a bilge pump since this picture was taken .. 😉 The metal square box. With the qx 32 (?) oil I found on board. The gears make a hissing hydraulic noise when engaged so assumed the gears but there are various pipes going hither and tither so maybe the drive too. But this boat seems a wonder of mysteries and oddities.

  13. I took a picture of how it was arranged before and put it in the same way. I stopped worrying about the belt tension following some advice above. I've cleared the pipes and I think there might have been a blockage caused by the knackered impeller. Been running for 15mins now happily sitting at about 70degrees. So my current thinking is broken impeller plus debris from it stuffed it up. Thanks everyone for the help, assistance and reassurance. We take her for a cruise tomorrow and see how that issue goes. And just whilst I have the thread going anyone have any ideas why the boat will only go one speed? It will rev up whilst in neutral, but as soon as I put it in to either gear it does not rev at all. Its a hydraulic gear system (another new thing for me) I've topped up the hydraulic oil etc

The raw water comes in goes around and up to the metal cylinder box thingy (not sure what its called) comes out then down into the bottom of the pump then up and through the housing where it joins the air exhaust - down to a 'mud box' then out ... If that makes sense (sorry still learning the jingo for wet exhausts)

  16. OK I replaced the impeller today as I thought that might be the issue and it was truly knackered. However the engine very quickly got up to 90+c and I decided best to stop.
  17. Hey I'm currently "playing" around with a new project boat and am having an issue with some over heating. The boat has a raw water cooling exhaust type system, with a jabsco water pump powered by a pulley /belt. The engine is overheating and it looks like the belt is too slack - but i can't work out how to tighten it. Dumb I know- the 'wheel' at the pump is attached to the pump and so no real that end. The other end has 3 bolts going into it but doesn't seem to be able to 'move' to allow any slackening or tightening. I'm sure its something obvious but its driving me blind. Its a mitsubitshi l 3e engine if that helps any.
  18. They (atleast this one) does have a flatish bottom for about a 1/3rd (say 2ft ish) More questions tomorrow- probably about the wet exhaust and the mitsubitshi engine Thanks for everyone's consideration. And of she sinks I will let folks know 😉 Mark

  20. Hey So boat #2 is currently stripped out pretty much. I was wondering if anyone knew the purpose 🤔 of these metal "spikes" Well bolts i suppose. I'm calling them spikes as Mrs stood one and it went through her new wellies. Half tempted to cut them out unless there's a reason to keep them? Its possible the ballast sits on top of them maybe ? Any spared wisdom gratefully received.
  21. Sounds like you want to pop by? Had 4 different mechanical type folks in there doing stuff recently no one else commented. I suppose most folks you employ are only interested in doing the job they are sent to do. Gear box was fitted this summer cant remember the make but I think its 2:1 ratio if that makes sense.   23. Thanks for the helpful comments. I am a little bit over zealous at giving it a twist after any engine use. I'm using morris k99 seems to be the standard. She is coming out of the water in January so will get the packing looked at.
