I had Comastic previously,  did a lot of ice breaking in 2009-11...and it didnt affect it. I now have Dacrylate epidac 16 2 pack , it also seems unaffected by ice breaking (nothing better than a winter cruise on a sparkling frosty day!!.)

Our boat was coated in the same and prove to be pretty bullet proof. Several miles of ice breaking on different occasions didn’t leave a mark.

It’s since been re-coated twice with different epoxy products none of which have been as good, although having said that I wouldn’t hesitate to go ice breaking with any epoxy coating assuming its been applied correctly.

I seem to remember my mortgage went up from something like 5 to13% in months, not years.

I remember it well, I bought my first house around that time. My point was that the current generation of over 65s are enjoying pensions that seem to be a thing of the past. Basically having the same income in retirement as when working. I know a few boat owners who retired in their 50s and have enjoyed a generous income ever since.

I’m only jealous because I’ll have to work into my 70s to maintain anything like my current standard of living.

  3. I guess it’s just a reflection of society as whole. The baby boomer generation has guilt edged pensions and lots of disposable income whereas the younger generation are struggling to make ends meet with rising mortgage cost etc.

I can't believe how many people use a tea bag in a mug. We use a teapot and get 4 mugs of strong tea from one tea bag (Yorkshire Tea). What a waste of money!

I guess that depends on your definition of strong tea.
My work colleagues would have you believe that a strong brew is anything that slightly taints milk. 🤢

It's a last resort for most of us, isn't it, but last night I thought I'd grab a "just in case" bag off the forecourt on the way to t'boat cos I knew I was a bit low.  £12.99 for 10kg of Cosilite (never heard of it) or £24.99 for 20kg of Blaze. Streuth! Last I bought was off Jason on coal boat Bargus, and he apologised for 20kg of Excel being 14.50! Imagine the local garage being your normal source - hardly bears thinking about. :(

£14.50 😳that’s a bit steep. Last November my local coal merchant was charging £12.70 and delivery is free of charge. I checked just before Christmas and the price had increased to £13.60 but even at that £14.50 is still expensive.

Morso do a pair of extended triangle thingies which sit at the sides and direct the coals down to the grate. I have found they don a similar job to the fire bucket cage, without having the job of having to remove it and empty it out occasionally.

I have said coal inserts in our Morso and they work a treat. I can keep the fire ticking over by adding just 8-10 brikettes

  7. We have a Heritage Uno range on our boat which provides all our cooking, heating and hot water needs.
It’s been very reliable for the last 8 years but in the last few days it’s developed a fault.
Our usual engineer isn’t available anymore so can anyone recommend someone in the Cheshire area? We’re based near Northwich and would be willing to cover the travel costs for a reliable engineer from further afield.
    Thanks in advance

It's the beginning of silly season on the Llan, most boats are sensible but I think that because there are so many boats there is the same percentage of idiots in general just more actual number of idiots plus because you are already primed to notice and you have a lower threshold you notice them more.

Plus by the time you get up to Chirk it's not uncommon for long convoys of boats to have built up as they are held up by Chirk aquaduct and the two tunnel, again this makes the idiots stand out because by the time the 15th boat has passed in a fairly short time it is easy to allow the grumps to take hold.

There's no avoiding it, moor properly travel early or late and try to chill because it is worth it or do it in the winter because it's quiet, it rarely freezes and quiet frankly the last few miles in a cold frosty morning is just stunning

We always head up the Llangollen in the depths of winter. It’s wonderful. Can’t beat an early start on a crisp winters morning, back cabin stove keeping me warm and endless cups of tea.

  9. I’m looking to buy an aerial to work with a Huawei B535.

There seems to be a big variation in price for the different omnidirectional aerials. My research has been inconclusive as to which will be my best option. I’m happy to spend more for the best suited to my needs.

We use the WiFi for general internet browsing and streaming from Amazon prime, YouTube etc.

Any help from those wiser than myself would be much appreciated.

No. The short circuit current of the panels is 5.85 Amps. And at the maximum power point they produce 5.47 Amps. So with 3 panels in parallel you could be slightly exceeding the rating of a 16A switch. It will probably work just fine, but the switch life may be reduced.

Yes i thought that would be the case. My old panels were wired in series but i wanted to mitigate for any partial shading.

If you're going to fit a  switch take a look at this couple. They get to it half way through but they are tidy workers!

If I wire the panels in parallel would 16amp be adequate? If memory serves me right the open circuit current of the 3 panels I intend to fit is about 5.8 amps.

  12. So basically I’m upgrading to new panels on an existing system. The + cable is fused between batteries and controller and I considered fitting a circuit breaker between panels and controller however as I’ll be retaining the MC4 connectors I guess that will be adequate for removing the load from the controller.

  13. I will shortly be mounting solar panels on my roof using tilting brackets and I want to be able to easily remove the brackets for future painting.

I have 3 methods of fixing in mind.

1- bolts screwed directly into the roof

2- grub screws/studs screwed into the roof and brackets secured with nuts

3- rivnuts fixed into the roof and brackets bolted into those.

I’m leaning towards rivnuts as it would give a deeper thread and removal would be simple. What are people’s thoughts/experiences?

No, it's not. It might not be from your perspective, but there is a mass of new CC  boaters brought along by YouTube vloggers who think bag it and bin it applies to toilet, and this was almost encouraged by CRT until this year.

I have seen two couples move onto boats in the last 12 months, and heard of plenty more, that do just as I have described.

One of the boats who watch every vlog going

.."composting loo best thing since sliced bread..." were emptying bags of shit into our bins every couple of days.

The other couple  moaned that they werent allowed to come back from their 2nd local mooring at the nearby water point and empty their poo sacks in our bins saying they didnt know where the next bins were.(1/4 mile further on)

I know that, you know that and you do it properly, but there is mass of new liveaboard CC boaters that DONT do it that way.

Ahhh the curse of the boat vloggers 🙈
