Recommend joing the tidal Trent FB group. I've left now I've sold my boat but think it was called Trentlink. A really useful group and you should be able to buddy up with another boater through the group.

Hopefully her neighbour isn’t this guy😂
I can only see that potentially damaging the mooring ring and hand rail as well as polluting the canal with grindings and filler, blacking etc. Get it docked and do it properly.

An easy solution to hold curtains in at the bottom is dowel for wardrobe rails with the associated fittings. Available in all DIY stores.

Sounds like you are being very sensible. Don't be too disheartened as your boat will come along. Also think how much you have learned by going through this process/ordeal. Best of luck and also with your move.

As your children are in their 30s and 40s and are outdoorsy I'd say don't be constrained by limiting the number of locks. They are fun and will be easy peasy with 4 adults on a boat. Hubby and I regularly did 30+ in a day and the sense of achievement is superb - nothing like feeling you have really earned a pint at the end of a day's busy boating! So much of the network is stunningly beautiful so you will be spoilt for choice. Hope you all have a great time.

I may be in a minority but I find it quite entertaining when topics go on a meander. It's only when people start bitching and being hateful to each other that I turn away. I haven't even got my boat any more, but I still can't leave the forum behind.

Talking of spiders, I had one living in and around my driver's wing mirror. It was quite big. I rather hoped it would blow off while I was driving but it didn't. I didn't want to squish it so I drove to a carpark in the north of the city, fished it and its cobweb off with a bit of branch and put it on a hedge at the edge of the carpark. Then I drove straight home. The next day there was a new cobweb on my wing mirror! It was either back or I had some of its family still with me. Nevertheless I was gobsmacked. Clever creatures although very scary.

You can get different coloured tile trim and also different coloured grout & sealant in loads of shades to compliment coloured tiles, which might look nicer than white in your other areas. I hope the negative comments haven't taken the shine off your new galley and that it gives you lots of pleasure.

Think I'm missing something. The boat was due to be lifted and surveyed today. The survey will now take place a little later in the week. The boat needs blacking/epoxying. If it were me I would get the boat out as planned and wait for the surveyor. Whether the OP ends up buying the boat or not they will likely be paying for the lifting, survey and relaunch. Or is this a case of the boat being owned by the marina with the lift out facilities who were offering to crane in and out for free? I would not think it wise for a newbie boater to skip getting a survey - despite the flaws we know them to have. Was the OP planning on getting the hill coating sorted at the marina?

No wonder CRT are happy to add a surcharge on CMers.

From October onwards, fuel companies add a series of additives to help the diesel flow better during the winter months and prevent gelling. If these additives were perhaps missed out or fuel was delivered from an earlier batch, that fuel might not be winter specification diesel.
Winter Blend vs Summer Blend Diesel (DERV) | Crown Oil
Summer blend (March to October) is only usable down to -4 degrees C
Last night (Lincolnshire) it was -6 at midnight and getting lower
It was -6c in hubby's car when he set off from Lincoln this morning.

Armley Mill, Leeds. Probably the best place I've ever been to in the boat was Wightwick Manor near Wolverhampton.

For a very cheap and effective tile effect you could do the following:- Choose a colour and buy a tin of gloss and a tin of matt paint in the same shade. Paint the whole area in matt. Depending on the base surface you may need to use a primer first. Mask out 'grout lines' using fine line masking tape. (De-tack it by sticking each strip to fabric, eg jeans/overalls, a couple of times if required.) Then paint over the area in gloss. The matt paint acts as an undercoat for the gloss. Remove masking tape when dry. This will be cheap, quick, reasonably hard wearing and easy to touch up in the future. Using the same colour in different levels of sheen can be extremely effective and good value. Look forward to pictures of the rest of your new galley. V exciting!
NB you could use a lighter shade of matt to make the grout lines stand out more but this might look a bit gimmicky imo. (You are giving the 'effect' of tiles rather than trompe l'oeil).

Wood burns best with air coming in from the top and likes having a bed of ash to burn on. The ash will rest either on a solid surface, or a grate with narrow gaps between the bars. Coals burn best with air coming in from underneath, so need a grate with reasonable gaps in the bars.
A multi fuel stove will have adjustable top and bottom air intakes and a compromise in grate spacing to suit both fuel types.
What a clear and useful description! I can never quite remember which of the controls (top or bottom) to use on my house stoves but will do now. I also won't be so fussy about clearing the ash from the griddle/grate when I set the fire with logs. Thank you ☺️

But you said you were prepared to sell it.
There's a logical disconnect in there.
Why offer something you want, yet you already own, for sale? Either it's worth having or it isn't. You are never going to enjoy an effortlessly affluent lifestyle simply on the proceeds of one miserable windlass!
True and I wasn't really expecting a response if I'm honest. Put it this way I would rather hang on to it than sell it for a fiver, only to have to buy another one in 10 years time. I was being rather tongue-in-cheek and reacting to the hoo-ha that this thread generated.

You don't have to be a boat-owner to go boating. We will probably hire and will certainly crew on friends' boats.

Why wasn't it included in the boat's inventory?
Every time I've bought or sold a boat, ancillary equipment was included in the deal.
Because it was a birthday gift and we left them 2 'normal' windlasses, along with everything else they could possibly need (life jackets, furniture, WiFi router & aerial, new boarding plank, pole & hooks, new mattress & bedding, crockery etc etc). We anticipate getting another boat on retirement and I will be glad to have it.

I was just being a bit of a provocative stirrer I'm afraid 😄 (as I hope y'all guessed). I'm 5'4" and fairly slight and I found the Go Windlass really handy for the more tricky locks, however most of the time I preferred to use my standard el cheapo one. As tempting as the generous offer of cash + mince pie was I think I'll hang onto it for the day I can persuade himself that we need to get another boat.
