  1. Ola! Apologies if this is the wrong area of the forum. Buying a boat and one of the first things that needs doing fairly urgently is a new bathroom. I am probably going to tackle this myself but thought id get quotes from people who know what they are doing to see just how horrific and affordable this might be. Anyone have any recommendations for companies/people who would do narrowboat bathrooms in/around the Crick/Rugby/Whilton area Cheers!
  2. never been curious about another person burning their poop before. I definitely am now though!
  3. Just got survey back. On the whole positive. Whats the next step? Do I send the survey to the broker, do I contact them and just tell them whats in the survey? Its all suddenly become very real and I love it! PS. are radiators and running hot water done by different boilers? Getting conflicting info on what boiler the boat has and want to check im not being a moron before calling up.
  4. Dont want to do this but asking the question incase anyone can find info on it, is it possible to burn the dried "compost" in a stove?
  5. can you not bag it and dispose in normal bins? I thought id read somewhere that was the done thing?
  6. Considering a composter. Anyone had the dreaded fly issue? Thats the no.1 thing putting me off right now!
  7. So now im all sorts of worried after reading this thread but I suppose only time will tell! Survey is soon. Only downside... due to Covid the surveyor has asked that I dont shadow him on the survey.
  8. About to join the boating world! Whats your go-to tool for clearing the prop? If heard some people use hand saws, some people use bolt cutters, others kitchen knives.... What do you suggest and why?
  9. awesome list. Had to google what some of those things even were! Thanks!
  10. I am about to become a narrowboat owner! I am also somewhat meticulous with record keeping and planning. I want to know what things do you have on a re-occuring to-do list and how often? Rather than stuff you just deal with when the issue appears. So for example, I know blacking is generally every 2 years or so. How often for things like engine service? Cleaning out the stove etc? I am sure there are 1000 things I havent thought of or know about.
  11. Cheers for all the input. Will be going for a surveyor not recommended by them, and keep a good eye out for stuff just in case Will report back once its all done and let you know if I am still a happy bunny!
  12. Cheers mrsmelly. Was looking at Michael Clarke. Seems to be well respected on here from what I can see, and he is first on the recommended list from Whilton. Potentially looking at Mark Douglas, but cant find any mention of him on this forum. But his reviews elsewhere seem good.
  13. So I have put the deposit down on a boat (eek!) I had already been looking up surveyors, and one seems to have favourable reviews on here. However I also hear alot of people saying not to use the surveyors recommended by the broker, and the surveyor I was thinking of using was then recommended by the broker. Would you avoid them just because the broker recommended them? ps. Im buying from Whilton, I know they dont have a great reputation on here but they had the boat I wanted for a price I was happy to pay.
  14. Thanks to everyone for your help! Put the deposit down this morning! Bricking it!
  15. So I am looking at a boat, and the broker had a survey done a few months ago. 1) It says 'the rudder tube was located within the diesel tank and could not be inspected'. Just wondering if this is normal? Dont even know what the rudder tube is, so just looking for some enlightenment! 2) It was just blacked along with the survey, when I get my own survey done will it mean a full re-blacking of the boat? Any help is appreciated. Cheers
  16. Hey all, thanks for the input
  17. Thanks for the input. Paying in cash so thats not an issue at least! So I suppose the real question then is what is rough turn-around time for getting a survey done (I appreciate at the moment everything is different because of COVID)?
  18. Been seriously looking to buy for a while. Some things have happened in my life to speed this up. Just wandering that the rough timescale is from finding a boat you like and making an offer, to actually getting on your way is. This would be with getting a survey done *note* I appreciate this is a how long is a bit of a string type question as it would depend on what surveys find etc but looking to find out your experiences so I have a ball park for different scenarios
