  1. Aaaah OK. Thanks both for answering this - I can rule that out now. Appreciated Anna-Maria
  2. Hi, I have posted here previously about the 1809 Croydon Canal. I manage a nature reserve along what was the canal pathway in Brockley - now a railway line. There's a section uncovered we think may be the canal towpath - pathway next to mossy bank around 5 ft high. Hawthorne trees seem to run along close by. The canal plans show the towpath was on the same side. Found this under some bramble - most likely junk but thought I'd post just in case there's a link to the canal but appreciate it is most probably linked to the railway. Any thoughts helpful - I can chuck it if it's worthless but reluctant to...just in case. Thanks Anna-Maria pics.pdf
  3. Thanks for going to all this trouble Mark99 - the 'stone' reference is at about the right place...interesting. It seems too small a structure to be noted on a map - perhaps we will find more as we continue to clear. The tool is a very useful one and I can see I'll be using a lot! Thank-you. oboat - thanks for your advice. Very helpful. We'll uncover more and then look at the other possibilities you suggest. I was so hoping it had something to do with the canal..oh well.
  4. Thanks Ray T - yes I have seen that poem before. I'm attaching a very lovely extract from a newspaper from 1891 in which someone remembers the beauty of the Croydon Canal - beautifully written and very sad.
  5. Hi Mark66, I'm attaching 2 screenshots - let me know if these are OK. Thanks Anna-Maria
  6. Hi Mark99 - I don’t know of the map overlay service. If you can help with this that would be great. I know for sure that this is a section where the railway followed the canal course then veered away towards Forest Hill. What do you need? Co-ordinates or a screenshot?
  7. Thanks Tam...this is a pic from the side. There’s a dip about 3/4 of the way down on both the arm bits. Sounds like it’s not anything to do with the canal...we will do more digging and see what else there is down there.
  8. Right...the railway now runs along and can’t see/access the other side of tracks. This structure sits adjacent to the railway line so the flat side faces out to the railway.
  9. Thank-you. It’s about 52 inches high but may well be much taller as we don’t know how deep it goes. It’s about 30 inches wide. How far along from this one would the 2nd one be do you think?
  10. Hi, I’ve joined this forum to gather as much info as possible on the Croydon Canal. I run a nature reserve that runs along the path of the canal between Brockley and Honor Oak. Aside from the reed beds, ferns and moss we’ve found no physical remnants of the canal however today we unearthed the attached. Could it be linked to the canal structure somehow do you think? The reed bed area is protected from development due to its link to the canal so the history is key to this site.
