  1. If you feel you are too old to accept the challenge, then you probably are. It's not necessarily an age thing more a mental one to which you both have to be totally committed. I was 78 when we sold our house and brought our narrowboat; no regrets.

We spend the winter months in a marina and tour the rest of the year.

Surely, if you want to get the stern out, you push the tiller away from the bank and engage forward gear. It works just like a bowthruster at the stern.

If you want to move the stern away from the bank, try a short burst of reverse to do so.

Then why the judgemental comment about speed and getting somewhere?

I wasn't aware that my comment was judgemental although on review I can see why you took it to be so.

As a wannabe octogenarian I still fail to understand the need for speed that seems inbred in so many of us, whatever the mode of transport adopted. I stand with W. H. Davies on this point feeling that just standing and staring in a worthwhile use of one's time.

My experience of volockies, is not that they act dangerously, but quite the opposite, they can be too cautious. They discourage walking across gates, make you open both gates before entering a double lock, lift the paddles half way etc.

Sharing with single handers can also be slow and frustrating if you are in a hurry, as they have a lot more to be careful about and seem in general to be creep along and pass through locks really slowly.

"if you are in a hurry". Perhaps you have picked the wrong mode of transport

Flames are great against annual weeds but don’t do anything much for deep rooted perennial weeds eg cow parsley nettles bindweed couch grass etc here really it’s glyphosate cover with occlusive or nothing can get rid of them.

Farmers are rather stuck though as I believe burning is not acceptable now especially stubble burning

Perhaps flame isn’t so wise currently though tbf ☺️

    You are correct.

Perhaps a Rotavator would be  better choice.

That is as crazy as turning on the bilge pump. Yes it empties the boat of water but does not stop the leak.

The answer is to fix the leaks

The biggest leaks are the locks, back-pumping does mitigate that loss source to some extent.

  7. We were on the Coventry last week and experienced low water levels. I was told that water for this and the Ashby is from drainage from their surrounding land, so it's unsurprising. Perhaps a back-pumping scheme is required.

So if the fuel levy was to be based on distance travelled by the mechanic, something that is entirely out of the control of the customer, then the added costs could be significant. RCR really should reconsider and simply increase the membership fees to account for their increased costs.

Don't encourage them! We, as a nation, are much to ready to accept price increases.

I've often wondered what the chances are of being caught without a licence. I've seen several inspectors on the Stratford and around Braunston but don't recall seeing any others... with so many miles of canals, mostly rural, do inspectors walk for miles or focus on hotspots?  for disclosure i have a licence by the way...

We are out cruising and I have noticed an iPad equipped checker checking a couple of times, a different checker each time, so I know there is more than one.

  10. I use our bow-thruster to steer our narrowboat when reversing and find it much easier to manoeuvre into restricted spaces as a result.

Those of you who abhor "girly -buttons" will, gladly, deny yourselves the benefit of this labour saving device and have to resort to using a pole. 🤣

  11. We are currently touring or boat is fitted with a Beta 43.

Today I topped up or fuel tank at a cost of £151.

It is Fifteen days since it was last filled, so £10 a day for that period.

We generally cruise for about 5 hours a day and run the Webasto central for about an hour each morning.

So something under £2 and hour to move our boat.

During our many lockside chats with other boaters the main topics have been health, and stoppages, no-one has mentioned costs.

Because it's now requested, not required. There's a difference.

CRT don't check them so they're irrelevant, but grumbling about apparently unlicensed boats gives a lot of boaters much pleasure so they still issue them for nondisplay purposes.

That's fine, but why are we asked to print and display them?

My paper licence is years out of date.  I stopped putting them up when CRT started expecting us to print our own.  I don't have a printer.  CRT have been quite clear that they don't need the licence displayed, just like with tax discs in cars.

To the OP - your post reads like you're just trying to stir up division.

Not at all, I'm simply wondering why I should pay a licence fee to CRT when so many apparently do not.

As far as I know it is a CRT requirement that I display a valid licence on both sides of my boat, which is what I do. Am I correct on that point or not?

  14. We are currently creeping along the Caldon Canal above Hazelhurst Junction in the sunshine, feeling a little like the crew of the African Queen, as we push through the verdant overgrowth. viewing the collection of moored craft as we pass I have taken to wondering why most moored boats on this canal are unlicensed, is licensing optional on this waterway, and if so can I apply for a rebate?

It also occurred to me that if CRT stirred themselves to collect the £60,000 or £70,000 overdue they may them be able to afford to hack back the aforementioned vegetation currently obscuring the view of the water and bridge-holes.

I suppose I should ask the question of CRT but I am defeated by the increasing heat and feel an after morning coffee snooze coming on.
