  1. @MartynG You say in at Keadby and out at Shelby is safer than going round Trent End. Bearing in mind that I’m assuming you’re referring to Forest stadium, what is it that’s unsafe about the river north from Nottingham, and if I’ve misunderstood could you set me right!

I’ll probably head to Hull and follow the tide as you suggest. Either way as a regular on the Severn Estuary I’m familiar with a tide table.

Is there any mooring available in York central?

What type of boat? GRP cruiser? make?

Yes mate, fibreglass Atlanta 27 running a single Penta aq131c

  2. Yeah so that probably wasn’t super clear! It’s 8’ beam and 8’ air draught not 8.8’ beam!

I am looking to head up the Trent and on to the Ouse after a cruise around the Humber. Usual cruising includes Sharpness to Portishead so I like a bit of estuary with my river and canal.

  3. I am based on the Warwickshire Avon in ‘cruiser country’ but unlike many of my peers I like to explore further afield when possible. I’d like to tow my 27’ 8’ 8’ to Nottingham and make my way up to York. I believe my dimensions will allow for this trip but does anyone know any reason why I wouldn’t make it- pinch points, lock restrictions etc?

  4. Is it me or are some people desperate to crawl up their own own arse on here. I asked a simple question which was does anyone know a good installation guy in my area . If so, thanks. The official guys are quite expensive, that's obvious. I also said I didn't want a cowboy. Who does? If you don't know know, don't bloody answer. If you do, I'd really appreciate it. End of. Sorry. Frustration.

  5. I've decided on one of these heaters for my 27' x 9' cruiser. Its in Worcester but even though I'm buying it from the official dealer I can't afford any of their official partners installation costs. I don't have the skills to do it myself. I have all the parts necessary. Are there any non cowboys around who can install with 2 outlets into a a cruiser like mine for 300?

That, I believe is NABO's argument,

C&RTs definition is that the boat must be 'suitable' for whatever dimesnions C&RT decide (and which will probably slowly reduce year on year)

This NABO argument makes total sense. Boaters shouldn’t have to wonder if their vessel is ‘suitable’ for CRT specs. Which is why a navigation’s full superstructure dimension limit was important for arched bridge research.

    Not at the moment. ;)

Anyway the bar at the entrance to the river is one of the worst in the country Not for inexperienced boaters.

Thou doth presume. May I point out that inexperience on the canalworld forum does not an inexperienced boater make. Nor does inexperience on the Grand Union with a wide beam cruiser.

Having said that, I should get off my high horse and concede that I am relatively inexperienced ?

That's a bit far out of your way but I guess Devonians will be delighted to see you!

Nice one! More than welcome to a little piss take if it steers things back on topic ?

(I think Bidford-On-Avon was the meaning, I'm not familiar with the place)

Also had big issues at Wyvern Shipping with the entire hire fleet moored right across the canal where the same hire fleet was responsible for the pound being about 1M down

Coming out of Bradford-On-Avon lock is my worst blackspot for this. Can barely squeeze my Norman 20 through sometimes the way the hire boats on one side and towpath moorings come together like Amersdam rooftops. The Companies should sort their houses out and either have the space or not have so many boats.

We took our (allegedly) replica barge up to Braunston in 2018 and have since crossed the K&A to Bristol and beyond. We are 2M @ 3.25M with the wheelhouse down (6'7" x 10'8") and would say that the GU was more of a struggle than expected.

The condition of the canal below Stoke Bruene is very poor and overgrown. There are many narrow boats who don't allow for the fact that they are on a broad canal - I had to knock a couple of them out of the way rather than drive through trees - not an option for you with a cruiser.

As others have said the arch bridges are a major pain - many having reinforcing underneath or 'falling off' gunnite. We managed quite a few lengths with the wheelhouse up (2.56M) but every bridge was a challenge. Of the two tunnels, you should be OK through Blisworth (take an umbrella!) but Brausnton will be more difficult as it has a much smaller bore and the profile moves all over the place - you need to keep the revs on to keep steerage, which of course will then cause more damage if you loose concentration on the way. The other thing you'll encounter is much snobbery from the narrow boat brigade who feel they have a right of way - it wasn't much fun.

I've been boating around that area for a long time so know the canal well from Braunston onwards. The Blue Lias bridge is very low - but if you time your run to coincide with the hire boat fleet arriving from Warwick, you'll find the pound will run off enough for you to get through. There are a couple of other lowish bridges near the Avon aqueduct where you can't wait for low water though as you're on a sump pound. Don't even think about Hatton!!

In comparison the Kennet and Avon was a dream.

There are a few low bridges on the Avon as well that may well be an issue. We have never attempted Bideford, but the profile doesn't look good there. Also Eckington, although it has plenty of headroom in the middle, is set on an awkward angle and the flow of the river takes you sideways (similar to High Bridge at Reading).

Anyway - good luck if you attempt it. If it were me I'd go through Bristol and up the estuary - easier run and generally better waterways.

That's really useful thanks! To address a couple of your points more closely, I don't mind steering close to the far bank to avoid narrowboats as I have auto tilt which clears my sterndrive from danger which is my main priority and gliding through branches hopefully won't cause lasting damage (I'm happy to be challenged on this).

I'm 7' x 9' with the my wheelhouse off so may or may not struggle more than you with some of those bridges, being taller but more narrow. I'll get as far as I can with Calcutt slipway my target destination. ATM I've decided against risking Stockton Lane partly because Calcutt Marina are happy to let me use their slipway so I can get onto the Avon easily without the cost of a lift. If I find that I can't get that far I'll turn back to the nearest one.

The people I bought the boat from took it under Eckington regularly, not sure about Bideford but it was their cruising ground. Thanks for the tip.

Not sure what you mean by going through Bristol. I will be doing that. Starting in Evesham - Sharpness to Bristol - Bath - Brentford - Calcutt - by road to Avon at Stratford/Wyre Piddle - Evesham - then on to Bath again via Bristol where I live atm

I want to do this as a loop. Just wish the GU was a bit more accommodating and the wide link from Warwick to Stratford was there.

Thanks for the luck. I'll certainly need it

No link has ever been started, and the chance of it happening is quite remote in my opinion, as there have been many influential people in the past opposed to such a link.

But if you want a taste of it you can hire row boats or canoes on the rivers at both Warwick and Leamington. I also saw a Broads-style cruiser on the river at Warwick once (in the 1970's) though there is nothing like that there now. A friend of a friend also has a small boat on the river at Barford (he also has his own island in the river there!)

Do you have any more info on why that proposed link has been so opposed by these influential people, John?

If I may suggest - the term 'towed' maybe misleading 'trucked' may be better.

Towing along the A45 (or whatever) may result in 'not a lot' of GRP being left by the time you arrive.

Depends on the type of wheels and fenders I've got on my GRP

Well, make a silly comment expect a silly response...

Can you slip Silver Lady at Stratford boat club?  It doesn't look like a very good slip for larger boats - although I have never used it, just looked at it.  That's why I recommended Sankey Marine (the far side of Evesham from Evesham Marina, past Tesco)

If necessary (and I'll have to clarify the slipway at Stratford) then I'll go in at Wyre Piddle nr Pershore. It's a marina I know very well and they have excellent slipway facility and my family live in Pershore 10 mins walk away

Stratford-upon-Avon for the return to the mooring at Evesham.

Although there's a very good slipway at Evesham - speak to Doug at Sankey Marine - so I'd aim for there on the trailer and just bimble upriver to Stratford-upon-Avon on the boat either before or after the grand tour.

Evesham are giving me a mooring for a few weeks when Silver Lady goes in the water as she already has Avon license, I was brought up there they're putting my webasto in. Then it's down to meet up with one of the pilots at the Dockers Club for my first Estuary trip to Avonmouth (you can get one cheap if you go via the club and buy one a drink or 2 rather than the official channel). Even though I recently got my Dayskipper I'll take a pilot first time ?

But yeah I might take a trip up to Stratford while I'm moored at Evesham. In fact we had it in mind to invite some friends on exactly that trip.

    Stratford?

Yeah, as in Upon-Avon, bypassing the link between the proposed, but as yet unfinished (if, indeed started) wide beam navigation linking Warwick to the River Avon.

2 hours ago, Alan de Enfield said:

I don't think that model has a flybridge.

No flybridge, can't imagine any flybridge managing the GU. I got a Norman at Rickmansworth and I've seen enough to know that! But Silver Lady is just a standard river cruiser with occasional coastal work capability. Not designed for canals hence all the research on which ones might be suitable. K & A has proved more than up to the job. This boat has a 2.9' draught, but with the sterndrive auto trimmed up it cuts the draught right down so no problems there mooring wise. Just hoping my screens are compact enough with the wheelhouse off to manage the headroom dimensions issue. At least as far as Calcutt.

  15. Just spoke to Calcutt. Happy to accommodate my 9' (that's feet, right?) for a 50 quid fee. Seems like a lovely place. I was watching Tim & Pru last night who kept their nb there and were visiting the festival at Braunston. Little chance we'll all be happily jabbed and that will be on in 2021 but I'd love to experience it.

Hopefully I'll get as far as there without incident and my tow can then get me down to Stratford for the onward leg.

Invaluable advice, thanks. Sorry if I struggle occasionally with a perception of patronising piss-takes. It's all good banter and we're all up against it atm.
