I was chatting to them and they have had to stop cruising for a bit but still live aboard, so nothing to blog about. Sorry I cant say more but they are both well. I am sure they will be back on the cut as soon as they can.

Same here, every trip someone will chat to me, even had one leave his boat and give a hand on Braunston Locks so Diana could set ahead

That’s great news about Al & Del, I’ve been following their adventures since they bought Derwent 6 and they suddenly stopped their blog!

Yesterday while moving south on the Oxford came across a hire company who thinks its ok to moor their boats 3 a breast leaving just a single channel open for navigation, and then at top of Hillmorton locks boat yard thinks its ok to moor a NEW boat on the lock landing. Also to rub salt into a sore spot on the other side a boat was moored on that lock landing as well, who had stayed overnight as he had a can over his exhaust pipe. I thought if coming down I would have moored against the new boat minus fenders and then see the reaction from the boat yard!

This I've found is a problem with hire fleets they just take up all the navigation as there God given right and then get bent out of shape if their boats get bumped while navigating passed them.

It would seem you’re not alone, a blogger had similar challenges last week apparently!

  3. I was a big fan of Tim & Pru’s GCJ’s and genuinely thought the new version would be like opening a present at Christmas and it not being what you expected despite the apparent shape suggesting otherwise.

well I gave it a go and have to say I throughly enjoyed it! The pair of them are wonderful and Shelia especially. Great new series which I look forward to evolving.

My parents in law owned a narrow boat called 'Deacon Blue' they had it built in 2005 lived on it for 9 years in Leicester and sold it in 2014. I was wondering if anyone on here owns it now or has seen it on there travels? It would be nice to see it again and know where it has been or lives now ?

I think a guy called Fergus might own it, he sings the blues don’t you know....

  5. Morning everyone, due to the Hack lock closure on the Shropshire Union Im now planning a leisurely week down the S & W from Autherly next week.

I think I’ve read I need a special key/windlas for a couple of the locks, is this correct? Will the hire company provide or do I need to purchase separately?

    Many thanks

    Hey folks,

I am aware this may be a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' question but roughly how far in advance should you start looking for a narrowboat?

For context I am looking to purchase a roughly 30ft narrowboat in roughly one years time. How long does it usually take for a sale to be agreed upon? Will any boats I look at now actually be on the market by the time I am ready to buy?

    Thanks in advance!

I plan to buy a boat sometime in the future, we are all different in the way we emotionally handle a purchase, however if I was in your position I’d start looking at boats in 11 months and 28 days ?

As I said I am certainly not a professional boater.

I’m sure you are too proud to get it, but I am actually trying to help you. Something bad happened to you that seems to have spoilt your day and made you agitated enough to create a login ID on here to vent your annoyance. A good aim surely is to prevent a recurrence of the same sort of event?

As with nearly all such incidents there is fault on both sides. Clearly the chap was impatient with you and probably ultimately did the wrong thing. But equally you were in part at fault by operating your boat in an inconsiderate way that caused prolonged frustration to the boat behind you.

If you like and if it makes you happy, you can wallow in self pity, feeling hard done by and aggrieved. Maybe you are enjoying that bit? But that won’t do anything to reduce the likelihood of a recurrence.

If you would prefer that this sort of thing doesn’t happen again, you need to ponder your contribution to the series of events, realise that you contributed to the development of the situation by causing prolonged frustration to the boat behind you.

Is that supposed to be where I said that one doesn’t need to slow down for the odd moored boat? If so you’ll have to try harder.

I would suggest that you are stupid to your face if you deliberately lied to my face as you are currently doing in writing on here. I think it’s called libel. Or maybe slander, I can never remember which is which.

Brilliant a lower deck lawyer too, in my humble opinion of course

So can you point me to where I said anything about slowing down or not slowing down past moored boats, few or many? No I thought not. Why make up stuff that I didn’t say? Does it make you feel good?

In case you are not just playing stupid but really don’t understand the point, the point is that the “line of moored boats” which allegedly prevented the OP from allowing the faster boat past, only extended a few 100 metres from the lock. At that point we can all agree that slowing down is the right thing to do and having boats overtake is not a good idea. But there was over a mile prior to that with no moored boats when the boat was up his chuff and yet he didn’t let it overtake.

There, do you get it now?

“It can be difficult and frustrating to get stuck behind a boat doing 1 mph past moored boats etc when ones own boat does 2 mph at idle.”

So frustrating that one rams the slow boat maybe, anyway sir I’d suggest you take a chill pill. You wouldn’t suggest I’m stupid to my face so why do it it behind the keyboard, are you a naughty warrior by chance?

Except there was no long line of moored boats, just a few in the last few 100 yds.

Oh I see, so you don’t slow to tick over if there are only a “few” moored boats then, thank you for clearing that up @nicknorman ?

I suggest it is quite wrong to think of a boat owner as a “professional” - with the definition of professional being that you get paid to do it.

Bear in mind that one difference between a hire boater and an owner-boater is that the former had some training from the hire company, whilst the latter may well have had absolutely zero training. In other words there are plenty of incompetent owners.

However there are also other factors at play: hire boats tend to have tiny propellors which mean that the boat will probably do 1 mph at idle. This is to discourage hire boaters from going too fast. Private boats tend to have propellors matched to engine and hull and thus (as is the case with ours) probably does 2mph at idle.

It can be difficult and frustrating to get stuck behind a boat doing 1 mph past moored boats etc when ones own boat does 2 mph at idle.

But I think the main way you have incriminated yourself is that you report that the boat had been following you closely since bridge 6, and you are now past bridge 11. You should have pulled over to let the boat pass at the outset. It is just common good manners and politeness. There is nothing clever about going along at a speed that causes other people to have to slow down, whilst self-righteously proclaiming “I am going at the CORRECT speed”. One sees it on the roads a lot, but that doesn’t mean the same selfish behaviour has to be replicated on the canals.

Next time, let a faster boat pass and then this whole set of events won’t play out again.

Nicely put , however as an experienced hirer I’d suggest the OP is dammed if does and dammed If he doesn’t.

He’s probably had a week of moored boaters sticking their heads out of hatches telling the naughty hirer to slow down so when he does he’s being pressed  to speed up!

Please, there are females using this forum, using such language is not welcomed or necessary, certainly not clever.

I for one will not tolerate it, I'd rather leave.

Apologies for offending you and others, that will be the last time I use that expletive, so back on piste can you give us a clue as to where this chap is please?
