  1. Evenin all. I'm looking for guidance on residential moorings, so 1) Is a residential mooring transferrable either from one boat to another, or otherwise, if the same boat, from old owner to new. 2) Is there any reason why a fee shouldn't be paid by the buyer of the boat, to the seller, on transfer of said mooring (if transfer is possible) 3) Would a BW residential mooring have a value? I'm sure you can see where i'm coming from here:- boat on mooring in sought after site... what's it worth? Sorry to lower the tone to talking about money etc, but needs must etc... Cheers Si
  2. Why don't you get a calorifier made up with three coils? I betchacan. Rgds Si
  3. Anyone wanna buy a horse? Got a nice set of sails to sell as well
  4. It's, er, thing... Potential energy tied up in a chemical substance. Well whatever's tied up in diesel/petrol/coal/hydrogen isn't heat, that's for sure. If you set up an exothermic reaction, you'll get heat, of course. But in an internal combustion engine the heat is just a loss. It's the change of state from liquid/atomised fuel + air to a very large quantity of gas which is the important bit. Heat is a by-product, effectively.
  5. Do you have a magnet of preference magnetman? Looks better than fishing I reckon the Forth and Clyde needs magnetising.... (I could do with a new car) Si
  6. What is an engine? I think Malcolm, (if you're talking internal combustion) you must mean it converts chemical energy into mechanical energy? Mind you, I only did woodwork at Rycotewood, so what would I know? Si
  7. Afternoon all. I thought I'd dig up this thread from its grave to ask if anyone would like to wave in my direction a copy of their Certificate of Conformity?..... Particularly the essential requirements section, so that I can get an idea of how much info is required. I've spent 5 years building me own boat from scratch, on me own, and i've got this one, last, little hurdle..... Go on, you know you want to Thanks Si
  8. Thanks for the replys folks. Julian, i'm going to follow the stuff you posted to the letter and keep me fingers crossed. It's amazing how far (up the creek) wishful thinking can get you. The rest of you, thanks... but TBH it all left me none the wiser (not much, anyway) Regards all Si
  9. No, its a self build 50ft Branson barge. The engine is fitted, all fine and dandy. (I'm an engineer to trade). But my original plan to live on the boat has changed, 5 years on from laying the keel, so the accompanying plan to get a BSC isn't as good an option as a self certified RCD cat D. The only sticking point is the engine. Everything else is sorted. I will get in touch with Perkins Sabre to see if they can furnish me with appropriate certs, but it seems unlikely. The other option is an independent assessment of emissions/noise, and for the cost, I might as well buy a new engine! (slight hyperbole there, but not much). So... any loopholes anyone's aware of which I can turn to my advantage? Otherwise it's the BSC, and a lovely water borne property to let!
  10. Hi all. Is it possible to fit an old engine on a new boat and still conform to the RCD? I've been searching and have found some vague reference to vintage engines, but not enough to go on, and nothing official. The engine in question is a Perkins 4236. Thanks Si
  11. Thanks all. Alastair - I must confess i'm going for the Halls for the (traditional) look of the thing, which goes against the grain a little. Form follows function is always a winner in my book. So for a decent self-stowing (stock-up-the-pipe) type anchor, what might you suggest? A Danforth or similar?
  12. Phone BW Falkirk on 01324 671217, speak to Brenda (although she might be at the Glasgow office), or go to the top and speak to Linton Byrnie. If you want to get in at Edinburgh, you need to get on the waiting list, sooner the better. The BW website has costs for the different moorings throughout Scotland, but remember you're looking for the Union Canal, not the Grand Union, which is in England! The waiting list isn't short, but BW are making an effort to weed out chancers who put their names down years ago but have no intention now of getting a boat. There are very few residential moorings in Edinburgh, and at the moment no available moorings on the Union canal at all - the nearest is Grangemouth on the Forth and Clyde; but BW will be opening up Leamington basin within the next year or two, and there are plans to dredge a new basin at fountainbridge.
  13. Thanks Carl, but their Halls anchors are about right for a row boat, not the big lump I have in mind. I tried phoning Piper boats today (who had a boat reviewed with just the thing hanging off the bows), but no answer. I'll keep trying them. Any others?
  14. Hi all. Anyone know who sells/makes Halls type anchors? - I need one for a Dutch barge. Regards Si
