  1. Thank you for all your information. I'll definately make contact with your contacts! Sorry i haven't replied earlier and am dashing out now so I'm keeping it breif (and believe me, for me, thats unheard of.. I could chat all day..) I'll keep you posted, thanks again. all the best Annie B
  2. Hello there been away from the forum swamped by assignments as my MSc in REnewable ENergy comes to a close but my thesis just gets started.. wanted to put out to anyone who may know how many people live aboard on the waterways of Uk? If not does anyone know a man or woman that does or of any academic research on the lifestyle.. facts are hard to come by and research insists upon references..DOH.. anyway I hope one and all are ok out there.. all the best Annie B
  3. good morning I have been reading your thread about the Haynes manual and guides needed to trouble shoot. Excuse repitition to those who have heard my rant but I'm about to embark on an MSc project (renewable energy technology and sustainability..) and am set to do my project on how to get the most affective use out of heat power and appliances on board and from that write a manuel gathering experts advice and compiling, editing etc. I found a few manuals on the Inland Waterways association book shop as I'm looking at what info is already out there and don't want to reinvent the wheel!! So don't dispair more and more people are coming around to needing this info, again these forums are fantastic for relaying this info.. I'll be putting out a simple survey soon to see what systems people have and what their issues are with them along with what type of manuel people want / need and what other info would be of use within the guide (service, sales parts tel nos etc), so do please spread the word that theres a wee lady out there who is endevouring to create a guide..! Good luck with it all and if anyone wants to let me know about their solar or wind systems or any new power systems they are using please do feel free.. all the best Annie B
  4. tis all to do with the chemistry, burning propane in O2 molecular weights and all.. I will work it out for you if you want but have just done exams and my poor brain is off duty untill tomorrow when its back to assignment world!! Deep joy.. Annie B http://liloontheweb.org.uk/ sorry that i don't know how to do click and your on the link, links but a copy of the web page for your delight and delectation although its really new site and content has yet to be added.. all the best Annie
  5. CARBON EMISSIONS FROM COAL, GAS AND DIESEL ETC Hi again guys found these figures on a new Canal web site Low Impact Living Onboard, they also have very kindly said they would help in my quest for info on systems for my MSc research, they are going to compile a handbook online which I hope to be able to add substancially to at the end of the summer.. all the best ANnie B These are some figures for Carbon emitted when you burn the following fuels: Coal * 1kg of coal burned = 2.41kg CO2 Gas Bottles (Butane, Propane) You can work out how much gas you use by looking at your gas bottles - they'll be labelled with the weight of gas they hold when full. * Butane: 1kg = 1.74kg CO2 * Propane: 1kg = 1.95kg CO2 Wood and Charcoal * from local, sustainable source: pretty much zero :-) * if you buy charcoal at your DIY store or somewhere then the chances are it comes from Tasmanian rainforest or somewhere equally drastic - don't know what the carbon emissions would be, but pretty awful! Diesel * Diesel: 1litre = 2.68kg CO2 * Diesel: 1 gallon = 12.18kg CO2 Petrol * Petrol: 1 litre = 2.31kg CO2 * Petrol: 1 gallon = 105kg CO2
  6. hello there, I'm new to the forum and just posted a reply to this topic which seems to have got lost in the ether, so I'll try again. I'm presently involved in an Msc in renewable energy / technology etc and will be doing my thesis this summer on how boaters can get the most effective use out of their heat power and appliances (including those dam tricky batteries!!) I live part time on a boat with my partner and will be creating a simple survey to find out what type of systems are in use and what the major issues are, researching these issues in order to come up with some anwers and produce a guide (again in the survey there will be questions on what kind of guide you guys would find most appropriate). I would be great to have as much input as possible as a present there is no literature on this topic at all. If any of you do know of any manuals etc could you let me know? I shall also find a conversion unit for a bag of coal to X grams of CO2! all the best to you all Annie B
  7. Hi guys I've been reading your thread about your lifestyles and being sustainable.. I'm quite new to the forum, I live in a house four days a week and the rest of the time with my partner on his boat Annie Too in Oxford and try to live as low impact lifestyle as I can.. I am very interested in the topic of how green the boating lifestyle is as I'm studying Renewable Energy (technology and sustainability) at Reading Uni. This summer my MSc thesis is going to be on finding out what boaters use to power their boats / appliances and how they heat their space and water with a view to producing a guide to help refine and get the most out of your systems. I believe it'll come down to batteries and their effective use (or not!) though. I will be creating a questionnaire / survey as I'll need to find out where the bugs and whistles are with your systems and find out what appliances you use that may help (like the lovely Eco fan we have on our burner!) Keep the topic alive, I'll find out how much CO2 a bag of coal emits, i have the figures buried in one of my files somewhere.. all the best to you all and I'll be keeping an eye on the topic. If any of you are up for a chat or a visit over the summer to talk with me in more detail about your issues all will help - oh and if there was a guide ( to be produced after the body of research), what kind of guide would you like? A haynes manual type? a booklet, a do's and don't.. lists of services etc.. all this info would be of great help to me in shaping what to produce, ultimatley its for you guys! All the best, Annie B N.B if any of you know of any DIY guides, help manuals etc could you let me know, there is so little on the topic for Canal boaters and I have access to vast databases, I keep drawing a blank, can't believe there is so little.. thanks again. tararabit..
  8. Hello Daniel, thank you for your message. I added 'Annie Too's' lighting info to the poll we discovered IKEA's round flat led lites (x4 for £20 @ 2watt) really nice easy to wire in. With regards to the survey I would like to cobble a pilot survey together first to see if the questions are appropriate and to get feed back on how it could be shaped or its layout. When its done I'll send it to you for your feedback, if you have the time that is. The main area for the study will be the Oxford boating community but I would be very interested in seeing what response there would be on line and will be making my own web site / blog (a requirement of the MSc project is to keep a diary) and anyone can see me and my qualifications / background etc before doing the survey and reassurance that what I'm doing is legitimate. Boating communities offer a really rare mix of a traveller community based in or near urban area's and off grid although a few moorings here and there offer power. All the best to you.. Annie B
  9. Hello All, I'm new to the forum. I live in a house 60% of the time and on Annie Too a 50' steel hulled narrow boat the other 40% of the time with my partner Ali (who is a member of this forum). I am doing an MSc in Renewable Technology at Reading and want to do my thesis on the range of renewable systems and associated energy appliances for boaters. I would like to start by doing a survey of how people who live on boats get their power, heat their boats and their water and what type of low energy appliances they use (LED lighting etc) or if they have any innovative tips and hints. This body of work will form the basis of a manual on how to get the best out of your batteries, solar panels, eco fans and water system etc.. which I will publish free on line when done. If anyone has any ideas for how to do a survey or what questions to ask people or types of panel, suggestions on batteries, wind turbines and any technology that you feel makes your life easier on board I would be very pleased to recieve them. I have already started forming ideas for a survey but would like to hear from you if you have conducted a survey or filled out surveys etc.. I'm really excited about being on the forum and look forward to communicating with you all further.. all the best Annie B
