  1. Hello. Thanks to everyone who have given advice on here. I did offer 3k with the intention of going higher, but it seems it really has alot of sentimental value for him and he wants to hang on to it to give to his daughter one day! It seems everyone you speak to has a different opinion about how much it's worth, apparently it was bought for 14k 7 years ago, and apparently worth more than that now!!! (i'm not sure about this.....) I was thinking about offering a good chunk of cash 7.5k so it was a more tempting offer but this boat just doesn't feel right to take on as the engine is really buggered (very much so according to guy i spoke to today who is helping to fix floor for the owner), plus the neglect of the hull, and the mooring fees are not fixed and will be going up in the future (perhaps double is the thoughts on this). I think I may have dodged a bullet here. Having a working engine has got to be a high priority. He's getting it out of the water and having it blacked and getting a survey done in the summer - so that might clear things up a bit more on how much it's worth, and whether he wants to keep ploughing money into it. However, I think I've changed my mind now and I don't want it.
  2. I hope so. I think it's definitely a possibility as its quite unsustainable for him. He's moved quite far away and can't be here to sort things. The money upfront could be a relief for him as it would take him ages to make that in rent, minus the other maintenance costs. But we'll see. Ill keep you posted
  3. I want to get the floor up, get all that rotten wood out, replace laminate. Build shelves to improve storage, make a fold up bed with a table and paint it all. I guess id spend a bit of money making it nice but if I'm gonna be on it a couple of years while saving I want it useable. Main thing is storage space and no where to sit if I invite people over. Apart from bed. Really want a table. Yes ok. Ill keep you posted. Thanks again, really appreciate all the advice on here
  4. I think offer 3k, go up to 4k. I may do informal friend survey. Definitely have to get it out for blacking anyway. Thanks for the advice
  5. Thanks. The engine is a bmc. Neighbour reckons we can get it going and have a fiddle around. It could just be something simple. I imagine owner just hasn't tried. I don't have damp feet amazingly enough. Although winter has been pretty tough and I've had a bad chest, no doubt from all the damp and rot
  6. No my rent isn't cheap enough to justify the work I put in. I'm not putting in money at present just time and organizing the work and coordinating things. I doubt anyone else would pay this. I guess I won't know how long, til a survey is done. I might just get my friend along to measure hull thickness with his machine as don't want to spend too much. Definitely needs blacking though. This could have caused issues if left 7 years.
  7. apologies. bad wording. what i mean is he rents it, and his name is on the papers. but doesn't have rights to it if the boat isn't there. It's all quite informal down here anyway and is by agreement with the farmer and the rest of community.
  8. I've got no idea about the engine. I'd need to get someone to take a look at it. Just got told it doesn't work and haven't even tried to start it. The water was coming from a leaky bit in the shower, which has now been fixed. also there is alot of condensation that runs down as the type of insulation is really crap with air gaps for it to build up. But this leaky bit has been going on for ages and left. some rotten wood removed in bathroom, but not all, at back and under laminate flooring. no idea about overplating. i wouldn't be surprised, as it's been left sitting, no annodes replaced, not blacked in 7 years. Also i had a look at the survey from 2011 and it's been done by a known crook in the area. hmm according to survey no plating has been done before
  9. He definitely doesn't own the mooring spot. it's quite an informal arrangement down here. he lives far away even, and just isn't able to do the maintenance. He keeps putting it back on me to organise it all.
  10. Hiya I'm wondering if anyone could give me a guide price for a Springer. 1979, trad stern, 33ft narrowboat. I'm currently renting it but thinking to make an offer. It's just had the shower pump refitted and lots of rotten wood removed, however there is rotten wood under the floorboards that needs doing and it needs drying out - guy who owns it can't afford to do the rest of work i think/and it's falling on me to do this maintenance work. I've just spent the last couple of Saturdays and evenings, absorbing water out of the floor and de moulding!! It's not been blacked in ages - since he got it - so at least 7 years, and I don't imagine it's the longer lasting paint! The engine doesn't work - and takes up loads of space. However, it does come with a prime mooring spot. which would be the reason for purchase. also not paying loads of rent so i can save up for my next boat. I have a small amount, an have just been refused a loan for the boat that I really wanted. Would it be a silly idea to buy this boat? would it be a pain to sell it on with no engine? How would the boat be taken for survey and blacking if it has no engine? appreciate your suggestions and opinions on this. many thanks. Sadie
  11. Thanks for this. It's very helpful to know how they're built and the reasons behind why people have been cautioning me about Springers.
  12. What is the reason for the wooden top. Isn't this a bit unusual for a Springer? Funnily enough 2 Springers with wooden tops popped lately. The other one is 1970, the guy doesn't know what type of paint was used for blacking 5 years ago, but advises it's probably ok for another couple of years. and is asking 22k. .... Now... even with my limited knowledge ... this seems a little odd.
  13. Well, they're asking for much less yes. £14k. My budget is 21k yes - but i am checking out cheaper options too, as I'm borrowing most of this cash, and that is scary. *edit to last post * meant to say there's no gunwales *
  14. Hello everyone. Hope you're well. I'm back with more questions. Still looking. Anyhow, I wondered what are your opinions on Springers, I'm looking at an old one, 1976, with a marine ply cabin. Because of this there's gunwales. Would this be an issue when cruising if i need to quickly get down to the other side of the boat - especially if on my own. Also what are opinions on wooden tops? Maintenance, and do they need to be replaced frequently? Also is there anyone out there who has a wooden cabin boat and can tell me if it makes any difference to heating it, and condensation? Thanks in advance.
  15. Thanks for the info. doesn't seem too expensive really if it's going to provide protection for your hull in the long run.
  16. Yeah that's what i was thinking. might do occaisonally. i will sometimes be in bristol actually. Are they expensive then ... these GI's.
  17. oooh there's some serious rusty patches on there. If there are any other newbies out there - i just found a really good article that explains it very well http://www.canalboat.co.uk/canal-boats/maintenance/why-do-i-need-a-galvanic-isolator-1-3930242 Just have a question - is it worth having a galvanic isolator fitted even if not in a marina?
  18. I'm waiting for more info on the age of the boat, and lots of other info. i know very little about the boat at the mo. only it's 40ft, and asking price 14k. it is sounding like a steel cabin and hull is a safer option
  19. Thank you. I have not heard of galvanic isolators/isolation transformers - although i plan to cc and use solar panels with top ups from the engine or a generator. Good to know though if i end up being moored and using mains. useful info, cheers.
  20. Hiya just wondering what you mean by corrosion happening from not being protected adequately when sat in marina. Is this to do with shoreline hook ups. is that what you mean by landline? and what is adequate protection. cheers
  21. Hello all I'm looking to buy a narrowboat to live on (still), and I wondered what difference a fibreglass cabin/steel hull makes as opposed to a steel hull and cabin. Does anyone out there own a fibreglass cabin/steel bottom narrowboat and are you happy with it? does it have an effect on keeping the boat warm inside or levels of condensation. Also is it possible to walk on the top? Would appreciate the thoughts of people who've got experience of this? they do certainly seem to be cheaper - but is this for a good reason? Thanks Sadie
  22. Hiya I'm new to boating too. haven't actually bought mine yet, have been searching for the last few months. Thought there's no rush as there's lots to learn, and i'm having some boat driving lessons with friends at the mo and still keeping an eye out. Budget is a bit on the low side for a NB (up to 20k), so hoping to get going in my own NB by early next year and save up a few more pennies in the mean time. Bristol/Bath/BoA/Devizes stretch for starters, hoping to find a mooring perhaps later on. I've found this forum really useful for advice already. So thanks to all those out there who give advice to us novices. Sadie
  23. It's a Coles Morton. Electrics, needs solar panels fitting/ inverter. Only 1 leisure/1 starter at mo. Don't know about the wiring. So new battery banks I imagine. So needs quite a lot doing, with window, cosmetic bits, plus uncertainty on plating work. He's asking 18k or offers. A bit much perhaps
  24. It's a 45ft, got gas hot water system, 1978 boat, looks like a Hancock and lane according to my friend (but owner doesn't know! Seems odd). Needs sprucing up inside somewhat, but functional, with burner, survey done this year and had all recommended work done 2 months ago (none below water line), plus new annodes, blacked. Its been empty 4 months and has a smashed window that needs replacing. Needs electrics sorting out too. Is this a stolen boat? Haha. I'm so cynical now! Does it seem wierd to you that the guy doesn't know the make of the boat but also said he's had a survey (I've. Asked him to send me survey) Also what's your views on overplating? I've been told best to steer clear unless I know for certain the welder has done a good job.
