You can get the BSS done up to two months early without changing the renewal day, so it sounds like you could just get it done now, or at least before you go away.

Problem is unfortunately we're not in control of our departure date due to a relative's health condition. We are not even at our mooring at the moment but expect to leave as soon as we get back in the new-year.

A further option is to arrange for someone else to enable access for the examiner whilst you are away.  Most marinas will hold the keys for you and hand them, to the examiner. Since we are not close to our marina this is how we do it without having to be in a foreign country!

Depending on the examiner, you may need to ensure that anything that needs to be moved (like 'extras' in the gas locker!) is fixed before you depart. Our last one fell due during Covid restrictions and the examiner was very 'helpful' as he could go there but we could not.

The only problem is if the test reveals something that will need to be done before the cert can be issued. Whilst this will not be picked up by CaRT until the licence needs to be renewed you need, as has been said, to check your insurance small print as you may not be insured until it is fixed, but if you are concerned,  ,belt and braces would dictate asking them to be lenient. Unless it really is serious then I doubt if they will be picky. But doing nothing risks having a claim rejected when it is too late to do anything about it. Again, if you have an existing maintenance person you could arrange for them to have access via the marina office.

We are not at a marina & don't have a maintenance 'person'. One thing in our favour is we don't have gas on board. Thank's anyway.

  2. I've had boats all my life & a few years ago we decided to have our catch converted to an enclosed bow. It's a 57' semi-trad   Martin Kedian steelworks did the work for us and it's been fantastic. We have a large berth over a stainless water tank. Much as I despise the look 3 years ago we added a Pram hood & all in all the extra living space has been a godsend. Well worth the expense. We don't have a bow-thruster but have no problems deploying the pole when needed & as for the anchor, being a solo boater. My crew is usually in the cabin, I carry the anchor at the stern with the chain/rope secured to the bow.

  3. My BSS is due in a couple of months time. I have a problem in that we may not actually be in the country to arrange an inspection before the due date. Our boat is kept on a CRT Waterside mooring & I'm not sure what action to take. Obviously if possible I'll get an inspection asap but if this isn't possible does anyone know what the score is?

I've asked our CRT 'local manager' but as they're not actually boaters & new to the job they couldn't tell me & now it's the holidays I don't expect an answer until the new-year.

Our licence runs for another 10 months until renewal.

  4. Thank's all, I definitely checked the choke situation, in fact when it's 'spluttering' I tried using the choke and kept it running. I've ordered  some Carbcleaner from our local Screwfix which I'll try asap but I'm pretty sure the jets will need cleaning. I have only recently given it a full service, oil-change, filters & spark-plug. Unfortunately I just filled a 5 gallon jerry-can with the cheaper petrol so I've got that to use up. I'm ordering the 'Fuel Fit' now.

  5. I rather foolishly left some fuel in my Honda eu200i generator for around 6 weeks. I went to use it yesterday & it started, as usual, on the first pull. However after around 30 mins it started 'hunting' then stopped. My immediate thought was that I had forgotten to open the breather on the cap but that wasn't the case. I started it again after checking the breather was working correctly & again it cut out after around 40 mins of operation. I'm pretty sure its fuel and suspect the filter which sits inside the fuel tank outlet. I have a replacement on order at an eyewatering £15 but I want to do away with the factory filter and fit an in-line filter instead.

Has anyone done this? if so can you recommend a small in-line filter?

Also I notice my genny is not fitted with a spark arrestor, do they not fit them on UK models? I've had it from new a couple of years.

Lastly, I imagine I'm going to have to strip it down and clean the jets but I'm tempted to try a blast of carb-cleaner, is this wise or am I just being lazy?

Honda say it's ok to use the E10 cheaper fuel but I suspect it's false economy

  6. We are on CRT waterside moorings just down from Venetian. When my wife had a serious accident falling down the mooring steps Venetian Marina were brilliant as that was the nearest place with levet access. We moored there a while & I would recommend it. Have you looked at Overwater which is just by Audleum, Its a beautiful marina, great facilities & surprisingly quiet considering the amount of boats there. I've visited many marinas over the years & if I were to choose one to stay in it would be Overwater, but if you need to catch the train for work daily Venetian is quicker to the same (Nantwich) station.

Have you asked Three for advice, I believe there are different settings available

I've been with 3 for 2 years but they have changed their app and you have to re-register. Unfortunately for some inexplicable reason I am unable to re-register as they don't have my email, I often actually get emails from them but it's a case of 'the computer says no'. I've spent hours on the phone and they've tried their best but they cannot get me re-registered. Recently their service is rubbish, they've credited me a free month but we're pretty peed off with them to be honest.

  8. I need to change network as lately 3 has become next to useless when we are at our mooring. I have a 3 'SoyeaLink B535-333 router with an external antenna which works really well when there is a signal to be had.

Does anyone know if I can just swap the sim out for one from another provider or do I need to get another router?

    Thanks

  9. I am finally at the point of finishing the plumbing for the radiators for our Heritage Uno cooker/central heating. I have an engineer  from the local Oil burner service who will come and inspect and commision the unit when we're ready.

For various reasons it's been 3 years since the cooker was purchased & during that time I've managed to misslay the diagram I had for the installation. (how can you lose something on a 57' narrowboat). I've installed many solid-fuel rayburns etc in the past but they have been gravity-fed. This system is fully pumped & I'm not sure of the joint between the hot water and the radiators so I'm looking for a diagram to help me out. I'm not worried about the diesel side of thing as other than fitting a separate fuel tank and pipe all the connections will be done by the engineer.

Any help will be much appreciated.

  10. I always keep the anchor ready with the chain led back to the stern. I use a Danforth type & I have a light nylon line attached to the  heel of the anchor with a float on the other end. The only time I needed to deploy the anchor, thankfully not on my own personal boat, we simply cut the rope once the problem was resolved. Then the next day managed to retrieve the anchor using a borrowed dinghy.

  11. Quite often on the water run from our mooring to Calverley services I encounter a fishing club match.I used to think the fisherpersons were waving me on until I realised they were pulling in their line in as they dont have reels on their overlong poles,

  12. If the OP wants to gain experience of locks they could always volunteer with the CRT at his nearest 'manned' locks. I was recently talking to a couple at Venetian marina whose only experience prior to purchasing their boat was every weekend for 6 months volunteer Vlockies. The only NBs  they had been on were the sale boats at Crick.

  13. My son was a post-office manager at a W H Smiths branch in Bristol. 'Smiths' run the PO as a franchise and don't do Poste Restante as there's no profit in it. However the Crown PO in Nantwich are brilliant and even the Tax-man is happy to use it regarding my pension etc.

    No they don't.

Yes they do. I have a mooring not far from the ex- Barbridge services. The services are still shown in the guides but no longer in use. Quite often whilst walking the dog early mornings I see towpath moorings recently vacated with the disgusting evidence of tipped cassettes, toilet paper faeces etc. floating by the side.

  15. Thanks everyone,. Yes I do have an expansion tank & yes I have tried resetting it to remove and calcium deposits. It drains into my bilge & I have a cup below the pipe so I can tell exactly how bad the drip is. I guess I'll have to wait until someone more agile than me can actually get in, drain the tank and remove the valve for me. I'm hoping that the local plumber suppliers will be able to find a match for me.

  16. I've now found out via the Victron community the this 'fault' is not uncommon with the battery protect. It is sometimes caused by a faulty installation where a reverse charge can occur by, for instance, incorrect solar installation. However, I was aware of this having followed the Victron installation instructions to the letter. I have been told how to try reprogramming the unit but also advised to return to them under warranty. I'm going to return to them but only once I have fully charged the batteries using the Gennie and checking their voltages after resting, for peace of mind as I have heard some frightening tales of battery banks being severely damaged after this fault.

I know this has not happened to me as I personally checked each individual Trojan battery within hours of the fault occurring and there was nowhere for the  volts/amps to escape to, but imagine if we had been away from the boat for an extended period !

  17. I think it's solved. The Victron Battery Protect has developed a fault. The symptoms started to repeat but this time showing 8.7volts I bridged across the 2 pos terminals on the Battery Protect with a spanner &, hey presto back to normal, So having a cuppa then back to double checking all connections and removing the BP.

Why the Battery protect seems to restrict the volts I have no idea but it was getting pretty warm.

  18. Strange one
My set-up is as follows, 6 Trojan (3 12v bank) SmartSolar MPPT 150/35, NASA BM-2, Phoenix 12/250, Centaur 12v100amp mains charger, Victron Battery Protect. I use a gennie to charge as required. No shore power.
At 3am this morning all was normal the BM showed 13.9v.
At 7am the domestic bank was off, the BM showed 6v!
I immediately checked the individual battery voltages, each bank of 2 showed 13.1. I checked all fuses, all ok, I checked the master switch. Turned on the engine expecting to see a largish charge, but nothing to write home about the 80amp alternator was putting in the usual small amount one expects when the batteries are in 'float'.
I climbed back out of the engine bay only to find all is back to normal.
Any ideas what the fault would be that would cause the BM to read 6v? The battery protection is set to cut out at 12.5v.
Obviously, I'll check all the 'joins' etc, but I'm getting too old for this kind of excitement.
