Placed the rope in a bucket of hot water then left it for 24 hours. Sadly no improvement.
Now stored for emergency use.
Thanks

My pot of Vactan specifically says...not for potable water tanks.
Beware of making sure it is for potable tanks. Some of the bitumen compound is very dangerous.
I ordered a tin for drinking tanks and the supplier substituted a different one,,.which was dangerous.
Last year I crawled into my little tank. Very nasty. I spent several days curled up in there taking it back to bare metal.
My idea of just reaching in....didn't work by a long chalk.
I made sure my wife was there making sure I was conscious.
When it was ultra dry...I applied two coats of a Thomson product that said it was for drinking water tanks.
I allowed it uber-time to dry...over a week.
This year...my tank is just as bad or worse than it was before !

Can you expand 're worse as last year?
Was it full of rust?
Had the paint broken down?
Was the tank lining scrummy?
Thanks
Ps
I spoke with boat builder. They advised I inspect the water tank every two years. When the boat was built the water tank was painted. It was recommend I should only use a single pack paint.
Will let you know how I get on.

Thanks for the replies. I will let you know how I get on when I do it.

Hi.
I have a narrowboat built by Coal Craft. I am considering opening the water tank with a view of cleaning it out. The tank is built in under the forward deck and gas locker. The access point is a hatch in the deck on the foreward deck.
Has anyone done this?
What challenges did you have?
Did you paint it once cleaned?
What undercoat and paint did you use?
What would you do if you started the task a second time?
Thanks

Just put in the hot water and leave it (to cool) for 24 hours, No need to keep changing the water.
Q : is it Nylon rope ?
I do not know

If it is Nylon then as Nylon is hydroscopic it will both absorb water, and also 'dry out', depending on the conditions. Hot dry weather and it will be stiff, Very cold weather with low humidity and it will be very brittle. We used to have to blend special grades for supplying products into Scandinavia for Winter time use.
Dry Nylon is not only stiff but brittle.
Soaking it in a bucket of hot water will soften it (you can use cold water but it will take a week to be absorbed).
You need to get about 2-3% by weight of water into it to get it to be flexible,
Hi
Rope is currently in 3rd bucket of hot Water, boiler states water is 78 deg, with slight improvement.

Hi, I have a centre line which was on the narrowboat when I purchased it. It is quite thick but inflexible. It is difficult to use to put a knot in when securing the boat. I have since purchased new ropes but would like to try and recover this one as a spare.
Does anyone have any idea how to get the rope soft and flexible?
Thanks

Hi
Anyone have contact details for a oven in a narrowboat in greater Manchester area?
The stove is Stove New Home 500 DIS, repair required the gas comes out when the know is turned on the grill and oven. On the hob we have to push in the knob and twist it before the gas comes out.
Thanks

We used cheap cat litter in an old pillow case for the last remaining traces of liquid which we couldn't scoop out. Worked a treat.
Hi Lysander
Thanks for that.
I am looking for what solution I should use to clean and degrease the sump area?
Ideally I want to paint the area afterwards.
Thanks

Having read this thread.
Planning to use oil and diesel pads to soak up oil or diesel in my boat bilge. Wet vac to vacuum up the water. I will then use a sponge on the end of a grab to clean unreachable area by hand.
I have cleaned the reachable parts of the engine using Wonder Wipes.
What decreasing solution should I use on the sponge?
Thanks

https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/news-and-views/our-campaigns/share-the-space-our-towpath-code
CRT safe use of the towpath link. It would seem their towpath policy is everyone gives way to slowest person or animal. I personally don't have an issue with it.
Anyone know of guidance for mooring a narrowboat on CRT website? .i.e using mooring pins

Just read a bit of your blog. What's the reason for changing the anodes every two years?
Resently had our boat out of the water and advised they didn't need changing!

Our surveyor confirmed it (and took samples away for testing)
I suspected it was as soon as I spotted it as I have come across it before
Not on the boat at the moment.
On the boat I have a cutting out of the towpath paper. It has photo's of steel hull effected by micro corrosion.
I beleve it shows itself as orange growth and when you press it it's soft.
I believe it states the only was to kill / remove it from the hull is to grit blast. Then use a ?? Acid on the hull.

Our boat was craned out on Monday at Industry Narrowboats on The Shroppie. We are having it grit blasted and 2-packed and although I obviously can't begin to offer any personal recommendation on how many years ours has lasted I am impressed by how many people have voluntarily said we have made a good choice. There are a number of placed who can do it and do a great job of it but we really needed an docking as early as possible and they were able to slot us in.
Yes, that blacking that is on there looks pretty good doesn't it? It was only applied in December but sadly it was applied over microbial induced corrosion so it's all got to go.
How do you know it is microbial induced corrosion?

Today I spoke with another boater 're putting Orange wrapping on pegs in the towpath. He suggested a number of boaters were being sued by cyclist who had come into contact with their pegs in the towpath.
Does anyone know of facts of this being true or is it a towpath myth?
Thanks for your replies

Standing on the towpath (its on the opposite side) it is to the right of Butts Bridge and to the left of the pub beer garden. It seems to have been an old public toilet, most of which has closed down except the boaters bit, there is a sign (not very clear) above the door. I also found it is impossible to access from shore except through the beer garden.
Thanks for the reply.
If anyone passing could post a photo which would be helpful.
