Plenty of boats pootling about on the Macc summit this weekend, but....where are all the ducks?
Probably in Braunston for the duck race

Plainly not Yorkshire, there isn't a flat cap or whippet in sight

CRT rent that Visitor Centre out for weddings at some daft charge, think it were £5000 6 years ago,
crazy money but folk pay it,
they get top floor and the grounds to themselves,
often it meant visitors for the museum were disappointed because access was limited,
but it’s exactly what CRT should be doing,
making money from their assets,
not rocket science
the cafe at the tunnel end is a little gold mine,
Seems to now be the North of England Centre for Music & Arts?? Not sure of detail but did see a Facey post.
The cafe does very well, when it's open. See a lot of disappointed folk sat on the outdoor tables in close season.

Given that the summit locks are currently locked and only opened for a brief period each day by volockies/staff who supervise their working, I can't see how else they could have got through and left gates/paddles open -- unless it was going down the locks after that, which wouldn't have lowered the summit level...
I love both the Rochdale and HNC, behaviour like this is just unforgivable... 😞
Can only find the post from 2020

Did they cut the padlocks off too?
Unsure, currently trying to find the post on Facey for more detail

Are there any local folk on the forum who can provide further information, especially about HNC Lock 1E ? I was told that the University of Huddersfields computer department situated on the towpath above this lock has a water abstraction agreement with CRT to cool their hardware but the water is then returned to the HNC below Lock 1E leading to a sustained loss of water above the lock.
I believe this to be the case. Originally i'd heard the canal water, once used, was discharged into the nearby River Colne and not the canal. On querying this the most i could get from the University's Carbon and Energy Reduction Officer was; "The water is returned to the canal with no losses". That's all he would say and would not specify which canal it was returned to, or respond to further queries.

If it has, some boaters really are their own worst enemies... 😞
There was a recent report of a cruiser with two blokes on heading over the summit leaving locks open and paddles up behind them, this happened a few years back as well. Same blokes? Who knows.

Agree to the cupboard, then store the dishwasher in it 😉 Compromise!

As an update, brass was finished to the best of my ability and taken back to the paint shed last Saturday.
What a pain in the harris.
It doesn't look the best it could, but it looks better than it did. I just did not have the time to sand out with varying grits all the pitting where previous lacquer had missed or worn off. Some bits we didn't bother with, like the lamp and horn as they can be done later. I only refurbed the nav light bases that attach to the boat figuring as the top parts remove i can also do those later. Plank/pole rack holders and prisms were the worst bits. Never again
De-lacquered, treated, washed, polished, cleaned again with thinners, two coats of Incralac.
Pic of lacquering in progress.

3) Counter top dishwasher. Doesn't use too much power, doesn't need to be plumbed in. Biggest QoL improvement I made on my boat beyond upgrading the power system!
We are very limited on counter space so no room, keep trying to persuade she who holds the purse strings that we should remove the washing machine and replace with a dishwasher. She agrees to the removal, but wants a cupboard instead

Took ages to get rid of them.
It was lot less dramatic than when I did exactly the same thing to a wasp nest though!
"Run away! Run away!"
Started knocking a pin into the bank once, by the second hit i realised there were more wasps than there should be, luckily grabbed pin and hammer away before they swarmed out. Explained why nobody was moored in that particular lovely spot.
Also managed to moor up with the hatch on the towpath side on a lovely sunny day, hatch wide open to let air in, turned out to be flying ant day and guess what we were right next to

Are you doing just the 4CR in a fortnight? I'd have though a trip up the Caldon and/or the Macclesfield/Peak Forest too would be very worthwhile in that time, depending on how many locks you want to do... 🙂
Or a quick trip up the T&M top end to see the Anderton lift

I use my short boathook to capture the chain rings, perfect for that job
I'd also add the reacher grabber stick thing that J bought for under £15 i think. It's been used to grab various things out of the cut, including my hat that blew off on a windy corner, J's croc that she managed to kick off whilst trying to get ants off her foot, and a walking pole a nice lady had dropped in.
We seem to have trouble with ants, no idea what we've done to them to provoke this level of revenge??

When I were a lad, before all this major solar stuff took off, you could get a small panel that sat in a window and plugged into one of the 12v power sockets and trickle charged the battery. Pretty inefficient, but I got the impression it did actually work. I'm sure someone will know more...
I've seen a few cars on private moorings with small ones in the windscreen, about £30 on Amazon for example.

1) Tough one, not much under a fiver these days. Perhaps the offcut of 9mm ply i made a new two-tier cutlery drawer divider from?
2) Long handled tent peg puller, no more wet knees or kneeling in ant nests/dog eggs when sorting chains out - £7.20. And the balance on beer
3) Hampton sofa bed from Sofa Bed Barn, but it was just over £500

Whilst it's not the material i'd choose for building (see also MDF), the old Shareboat had chipboard floors that were still going strong when we sold up and that was fitted out in 1999 and originally with a wet bilge throughout. Assuming all the Pat Buckle fitouts of that age were done the same?

I saw a fantastical made-up story about that boat on Facebook only this morning

Aspley marina?
thought that’d be alright for you?
They're wedged in like jenga, no good if you want to go anywhere.
That huge field in front of Titanic Mill would be a great location for a marina, but, no good if you want to go anywhere
-
Are you intending to live on, or leisure boat?
You can always move the boat further South with better cruising options. That's why ours is down near Braunston at the moment, plenty of cruising options and its only a couple of hours down the M1.
When we had the shareboat over on the L&L it was nearer, but nearly the same travelling time due to all the "smart" motorway shenanigans on the M62
If someone could make the HNC better and add a marina we'd be bringing it up home in a flash

There might also be a clue in the number of hire bases that have shut down or are up for sale, rather suggesting that it's difficult making a decent living out of running one... 😞
Out of interest, i went to look how much a hire from Silsden Boats would be now compared to when we first hired in 2015 and if they still included diesel in the price. Seems they've been swallowed up by Anglo Welsh now

Not an issue with the other half's penny whistle (YES he really does play one)! 😄
Friend of mine used to carry a penny whistle, he'd occasionally get it out of his pocket to play, we'd then throw things at him until he stopped

We passed a field somewhere on the Leicester Line in early March, absolutely full of swans stood around in groups, must've been a hundred or more. Never seen so many in one place before.
