  1. I don't understand how all the wood panels are fitted without finrads - does that mean all the panels need to come out to install finrads and plumbing?

  4. Just to be clear, you know I'm British right? I've lived in Australia for a while, but not actually Australian? That, and the concept of a "big storm" in Australia is typically something that means bringing in urban planning experts to decide where to build the replacement city. A "big storm" in the UK, typically involves someone to replace a few roof shingles, mend the fence, and replant the roses. I'll be the guy climbing the mast of his Dutch Barge in Beaufort 12, singing, "f**k you I won't do what you tell me", and declaring "this is why I bought insurance".
  5. Surely, something like what I have posted would be ok? It's been stripped back, new hull platings, new superstructure, new fitout, new engine... there's not much left of the old boat...
  6. That sounds about perfect to me. It's the best of both worlds, and doesn't mean trying to navigate canals in a massive boat as a novice. Lots more to research, but I think this forum has made my mind for me. I have time, and I have alternative arrangements for my family, so time isn't pressing, although I would love to have a solution by Sept 2017 so we can move in directly, without having to rent in the meantime. I know the risk of a refit is that I'm relying on advice and research rather than my own experience. And I have no idea how much it costs to fitout a sailaway to the standards I'd want for my family. Many unknowns, but that goes with the territory - I've sold my house, my business, and am moving half way around the world. All i can do is read, research and ask for help, of which I've found an abundance here. Thank you.
  8. I think this post reflects my sentiments entirely. I've been trying to find a boat that does eveything. That isn't possible. I'll find myself a beautiful dutch barge to live on and potter up and down the Thames, and then explore the canals in a narrowboat. I don't want to contribute to the problem.
  9. Shower / toilet 'compartment' means not fitted, I'd assume. No gas fitted, no plumbing... But how the hell so you fit plumbing etc, when all the wood has been fitted already? Starter batteries only, so no electrics yet. Looks like it needs everything except engine. It is indeed a sailaway. No idea how much a full fit costs on something like this.
  10. The absence of photos of galley and bathrooms make me think they are absent. I don't know about tanks, but I can't see a single finrad. I assume that what you see is all you get. I'd think that electrics, heating, plumbing, galley and bathrooms need fitting. I've emailed vendor. Will see. I don't know how much a fitout like that costs. I'd think 30-40k would cover the basics? I really like the layout (although I'm not really sure where bathrooms and galley is). It looks like decent workmanship, but can't see if they're wood veneer or solid.

  12. Yes, but the lesson I've learned from this discussion is that although a 70' x12' is technically within canal restrictions, it wouldn't be fun to be taking a boat of that size on the canals. So if I'm restricted to the Thames, I may as well get a massive boat / house and rent a narrowboat for the weekends. From the lack of pics, I assume it has no galley, bathrooms, heating, electrics etc. So I'd have to anticipate what.... 30-40k for a fitout using equipment that is decent, but not excessive? And from everything I've heard, I really don't want to be taking a massive boat on the canals. It sounds like more trouble than its worth. So the priority is having a really nice living accommodation and being able to go up and down the Thames on weekends, and then exploring the canal system on a hire boat or by 'swapping' boats for a week with a narrowboat owner. I actually really like the idea of this - having a good relationship with the community so that someone I trust can have a week in a nice boat in the middle of London, whilst I get to explore the canals on their narrowboat. A mutual trust and care for each others' boat. It means that even though I'm not on the canal system, I still get to be part of the community.

  15. Given the weight of opinion that suggests my plans of a 70 x 12 widebeam are just not suitable for the canals, it seems I should get my priorities in the right order. The second hand Dutch Barge is something that I've been considering, particularly a newish replica so I don't end up with ancient equipment. Thanks all for the advice, it seems to have worked - you're not going to have to worry about yet another massive wide beam on the canals Are there size restrictions on taking a boat from London to Oxford?
  16. Thanks Giant - I have done... especially the Branson 'Thomas' dutch barges. Inevitably though, my decision has still fallen on wanting some limited use of the canals.

Then a widebeam tax or increase CRT fee... if widebeam owners want to pay more for a big boat, they'll pay more for canal use... I know I would happily pay my way.
  18. Reading? Nobody actually 'reads' the Daily Mail, do they? I quickly googled "Crocodile on Canal" to aptly represent my interpretation of everyone's comments of waterborn dangers. In Australia, as almost any living organism is sentient and wants you dead, our primary language is "screaming". I'm actually only moving to the UK because there is a goldfish in our pond that has been plotting to kill me. The Australian Federal Police have tried witness protection for me, but it followed me to the safehouse. I'm just hoping that CanalWorld.net doesn't index my details on a google search so that the goldfish can find me again. I hear you have no snakes in the UK. That's nice. I like the idea of going for a walk without ending up dead. The canals don't have any low-hanging branches over them, do they?   22. I don't think you all realise how difficult this is as an outsider... I want to live in a narrowboat, but that doesn't meet my family's needs... does that mean I can own a boat but not take it outside of a marina? You all need to get your conditions straight. Do you want people like me to be spending money on the canals and helping the canal economy, or would you prefer we stay away? Yeah, I get that. And have had cassette vs pump out conversations a plenty! Entrenched views abound, and I work in an industry that monopolised traditions vs modernism!!!
