  1. Why not take it easy and stop off at West Stockwith? It's a pleasant basin with 2 pubs and a farm shop, and who knows you may be tempted into exploring the beautiful Chesterfield canal.

But not Gainsborough, which despite its name, is rather less pleasant.

I do intend stopping off to explore the Chesterfield, but on another occasion, as I have said in another post, my boat was at some time moored on the Chesterfield at Rhodesia, that is according to a brass shield on the chimney.

My thanks again to all who have replied.

  2.

If that's what you're hoping for, then you're in for a disappointment because there isn't any more water [depth] in the river at Keadby at LW Neaps than there is at LW Springs.

You've got some duff information from somewhere, . . presumably the same source that's led you to think that flood [LW] at Keadby is at 0830 BST on Monday 13 June 2016.

This is all information I have gleaned myself through the interweb. I'm led to believe that Keadby high water is about 1 hour 15 minutes after Hull and I simply assumed low water would also be 1 hour 15 minutes after Hull. Low water Hull is 7:05. Your comment is now making me think that Low water in Keadby would be 1 hour 15 minutes before that?

As I've already said, I'm looking for advice and happy to take it.

    Thanks again

  3. Thank you folks.

I have chosen 13th June because of the tides, I do also understand this is a neap tide. I am hoping that with more water still in the Trent at low tide, there will be more chance of getting out of Keadby. Being my first time on the river, I'm trying to make it as relaxed as possible. I do intend purchasing a VHF radio and have just started looking at what is available. Any advice on something for occasional use would be appreciated, I'm thinking a 'walkie talkie' type would suffice.

And...... I really must get my terminology correct, sorry folks, I'm going up the Trent :-)

  4. I'm intending going down the River Trent from Keadby this June. I'm looking at Monday 13th June when the low tide will be around 8-30 in the morning and the rise and fall is only about 3 meters. I haven't contacted the lock keeper yet, just trying to furnish myself with as much information as possible. I'm expecting to be able to get to Torksey lock in about 6 hours.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks

  5. Current mattress looks to be very old and is quite uncomfortable, even with a memory foam topper on it. The current one was manufactured by the Edwardian Bedding company in Mexborough and is hinged 2 feet from the top to allow access to the underneath storage. This has the big disadvantage that the mattress can not be turned or moved.

Advice - do I go for another hinged, or is it better to go for a split mattress?

    Thanks

  6. I've owned my boat, Halcyon, for 2 years now, but can only find information about her going back to 2011. Hope from this description, someone here might be able to point me in the right direction to find out a little more.

She was built by 'unknown' circa 1989. I actually think this is a few years out as I have brasses from Strawberry Island going back to 1986.

Up to 2011 she was called 'Scorpio', the previous owner renamed her around 2011/2012.

On the chimney is a small brass shield which says, 'Scorpio - Rhodesia' So her home base used to be on the Chesterfield Canal.

I am fairly sure she has always been moored in the Yorkshire area, either on the Chesterfield or the South Yorkshire Navigation.

She is 36 feet long and was probably a 'home build'.

That's just about all I've been able to find.

Please tell me if I'm wasting my time trying to find more!! However, there may be someone who recognises the boat from my description who is able to point me in the right direction to find out more.

    Thanks, Kevin

  7. My boat was fitted with a Torgen when I purchased it, I changed it to the Salamander Hobbit and am very pleased with it. The only change I had to make was an adapter for the chimney pipe.

Sorry, can't figure out how to insert a couple of pics into the message!!

  8. I started boating last year and took on a route from Thorne along the Rochdale, onto the Bridgewater, Trent and Mersey, Macclesfield, Peak Forest, Huddersfield and back to Thorne. I was with another boat through to Manchester and a second boat along the Macclesfield and Peak Forest, the rest of the time was completely solo.

This year I intend going down the Trent and working my way through to the Leads/Liverpool to join it at Wigan.

As a single handed boater I have found the locks to be no problem, going up is easy, going down takes me a bit longer, but still not a concern, I also don't mind bridges when the mechanism is available on the towpath side. However, I have noticed that many of the bridges on the Leads/Liverpool are opened from the non towpath side. I've watched a couple of videos showing how single handed boaters go through these and I'm sure I could manage them myself. My concern though is the amount of time taken and holding up traffic.

    So, after all that, my questions are;

Does anyone know where I could find information about which bridges need to be opened (I've counted that there are 39 bridges in total but not sure if they all have to be opened to allow passage through),

Which is the first and last (I might decide to get crew) and

If there are any real problem points that I should look out for.

    Thanks folks
