Do I get a prize?
If not I want to amend my answer from the first option to the last option.
If only we had a badge for that...

Do you own a boat?

We definitely have more than 66 active members but for sure, the overall poll response thus far is somewhat disappointing. It's hard to gauge whether or not something is worthwhile if we don't get much in the way of feedback. Raw numbers are obviously a good (but not only) measure of that.
That said I appreciate everyone who has taken the time to vote and give their views.

The new Forest Green Rovers ground will be on the other side of the road now beyond and behind the Shell Garage and Starbucks up to the M5. There will be training pitches on the Westfield Lock side but it seems like most digging is where the industrial area is meant to be according to this picture?
https://www.fgr.co.uk/news/eco-park-next-stage-plans-revealed
NB The proposed new football regulator may well have a say though as the club will be moving some distance from Forest Green. Perhaps that why Dale Vince organised drilling of some boreholes this week !
Yup, Dale Vince is planning an "Eco Park" on both sides of the main road to the M5. Then when Forest Green stadium is currently (In Forest Green Nailsworth) will be housing. Naturally all environmentally sound sense 😄
All the land pictured is pastureland currently.
Good grief! Let's hope it never floods like how they've depicted in those renderings!

Seems to have changed during last update. Getting bit bored of turning stuff back off but I have asked the mods what they want me to do with it. Still waiting on more feedback in the staff forum.

I can only imagine what poor ole' Chris must think when he arrives at his desk at Channel 4 HQ tomorrow morning, seeing all this drivel...

Hello,
I'm working on a project for Channel 4 about people who live and work aboard the canals of the UK, and we'd love to feature a story about someone who is pregnant living aboard the canals. If this is you or you know anyone please send me a message for more info!
Chris
Hi Chris,
Thanks for your post.
One couple I can think of run a Youtube channel named "Holly - The Cafe Boat". They document their life aboard as a young family with a baby. As the name suggests, they run a cafe boat and travel the canal network. We feature their videos on here from time to time.
If you go to their Youtube page linked below you can obtain their email address. I don't know them personally but they might be willing to participate.

Out of interest, what's your documentary going to be called? Will keep an eye out for it.- 1

Presumably the automatic moderation process will give more credit to an established forum member than to a newbie who has just signed up.
Perhaps that what the new badges are for!
It is set up in such a way to prevent misuse, yes. As such if 500 people reported yourself for spamming, nothing would happen automatically except the mods would be inundated with post reports and probably won't be very amused.
I'm not going to elaborate on it any further as I don't want to give away any info that could potentially allow users to circumvent or misuse it.
The key takeaway is; if you see a spammer please report them

Only if specifc conditions are met. These won't be made public. I'm not saying any more on this.

Same here. I didn't realise there was any point in reporting spam already reported, but it seems there is!
How many spam reports does it take to get a post automatically hidden, Rich?
Yes definitely worth reporting. - We don't make use of automatic moderation tools much because there's no substitute for our moderation team who do a fantastic job - the only exception where we do use automatic moderation tools is where spam/spam attacks are involved due to the potential risk they present to our members and thus the need to act very quickly. (Regardless of whether or not the spam attack occurred at 3PM or 3AM etc)
Unfortunately I cannot really publish exactly how or when the automatic moderation kicks in as I don't want to expose it to misuse. All I can really say is that it requires multiple post reports (i.e. from more than one member) and the member being reported AND the members submitting the report must match a defined criteria. Again I can't post specifics as it's also important to prevent misuse of this. (not suggesting you would personally misuse it however :))

Thanks for flagging. We were indeed hit by a targeted spam attack.
In this scenario the best thing is to report their posts. If enough people do this, the forum system will intervene automatically. It's really important we get spammers off the forum asap. All valid post reports are much appreciated.
This will help the mods who do a fantastic job towards keeping the forum a safe & enjoyable place to be.
I have also put in place some other measures to prevent these spam attacks. Unfortunately spammers are always finding new ways to advance their methods to try and circumvent measures put in place to protect against them.

Hello all I hope this is ok? I’m a small time YouTuber on canal restoration. A few weekends ago I helped on a dig with KESCRG on Westfield lock on the eastern end of the missing mile. This involved digging things out mainly. Here is my video on it, I hope you enjoy https://youtu.be/HGxubEXzm4w
This is what it was like at the beginning of the year when I was filming down there previously.
I’ve also been there this weekend for another dig (not volunteering this time just filming) and will be there again in 2 weeks helping again with KESCRG
Many thanks for doing this. I have featured your video on our homepage so that more people get to see it.
Will be great when the stretch from Saul Junction finally opens. Has been a long time coming. Hopefully not too long now! I wonder how long, they say 2025-2026 but is this likely?

Here's an example showing what we can do with it
-
I think I have fixed it, should let you post events now. May need to tweak it some more. Not much scope to change the functionality though, unfortunately.
-
In a recent update, Invision renamed the forum "Calendar" to "Events" to better reflect its intended purpose. I note that we don't really use it on CWDF - But why not? There's many boating related events that are relevant to us, e.g. boat shows.
Is it possible to add any events (e.g. boat shows) or anything that may be of interest to boaters & canal enthusiasts alike? You may add an event by clicking below
https://www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php?/events/
Alternatively you may share the details in this topic and I will add it. Please use the following template:
Event name:Date/Time:
Location:
Description:
Thank you

Thanks for the replies, I need to do some thinking and work out what is possible, but i'm sure I'd get more satisfaction paying for somehing that I ended up owning rather than paying rent forever - and if I was to get a boat mortgage, I could own the boat within a few years of purchase, that would be satisfying
Forgive me but I didn't see your original post. - What size boat are you looking for?
-

Also, if RichM moves his target length up to 65ft or 70ft, prices come down again. Full length boats are generally cheaper than 55-60ft boats which are in highest demand of all.
Thanks Mike. You're right as usual but then 65ft+ boats are more restricted as to where they can go as you know. The marina were I berthed my last boat only had a handful of berths that could accommodate a 65ft+ boat whereas there's an abundance of berths for 60ft boats and below, yet still a long waiting list for a permanent moorings there. That's what has put me off a bigger boat but maybe I'm making a bigger deal out of it than need be? After all, I do want an office space for WFH, a cabin for sleeping, a dinette, large saloon though not too fussed about the size of the galley. A Black Prince style galley would suit.

You can buy a reasonable boat for £45k but be very careful, it is a minefield for the unwary.
Where? I already have a little more than this set aside for a 60ft boat but not seeing many that don't look like they need a fair amount of work. Looks like I will need to increase my budget by about 30% to get something decent. Crazy how prices have rocketed in 3 years.

Not for me.
I don't trust anything that bears the word "Wiki" in it, or follows the premise of any old contributor writing anything they want (it happens enough in the forum, but at least that's hand able).
It's not that I disagree with the principle. It's because "Wiki" has a rubbish reputation. Why would this forum want to be associated.
Well this forum (or any public online forum for that matter) isn't too far apart from the very concept of a Wiki, i.e. a website or database developed collaboratively by a community of users. The key difference is that as you know, a forum is more focused around the discussion of such content and is not limited to or restricted to supposed factual information, but also opinion.
Not sure I'd agree with your point about Wiki having a rubbish reputation. By whom? Wikipedia for example is constantly maintained and updated. The same cannot be said for the hard-cover encyclopedia my late mother bought me back in 1995. - Which is now out of date and contains information that has since been disproven by scientists and/or other experts in more recent years. (e.g. due to recent discoveries about our solar system etc etc)
Point is; Much of what we think we know today will likely be disproven in years to come. But if we don't share what we think we know, how will anyone be able to disprove it? That is the beauty of sharing information. We can only build on our knowledge by doing just that.
Ultimately if people take what they read as gospel (irrespective of whether they read it in a scientific textbook or otherwise), then quite frankly they're simply narrowminded. It's always best imo to keep an open mind.
Point in case; Only 15 years ago we were being told by the government (albeit indirectly) to go out and buy diesel cars on the basis that they were more efficient and better for the environment. Now look at what we're being told. - Does that mean we shouldn't share what we think we know today?

Thank you for sharing your perspective.
@MtB this is a browser plugin that will allow you to remove elements from a given website. You install the addon and can simply point and click to remove any elements you don't wish to see. Of course it won't change it for anyone else.
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/click-to-remove-element/jcgpghgjhhahcefnfpbncdmhhddedhnk?hl=enIt is for Google chrome but I am sure there is something similar for other popular browsers.

That's nice for you!
I'm using a 12" laptop and I have poor eyesight and my screen resolution is exactly what I want it to be, thank you.
The point I was trying to make is that I tested it on my screen using a typical screen resolution for a 22" display (2560x1440) with a scale of 125% and it doesn't take up much space. Hence I thought maybe it's something to do with your screen resolution. Obviously I cannot test it on your screen as I'm not sat behind it. You are welcome to take a screenshot and share it. If you can also advise what your screen res is, that will be useful.
-
I have made it so that it appears in fewer places.
It doesn't take up much space on my screen. I recommend checking your screen resolution in case it can be optimised further.

You can't without browser plugin. It will go away when the poll closes.
-
Thanks for feedback. It would be good to get some more votes in the poll before it closes.
If there isn't a great demand or interest, it will unfortunately be hard to justify the time and effort required to bring it to fruition.

The idea is that it would be maintained as a collective and not by a single individual. I could stand up a platform quite easily but I do not have the knowledge or experience to create enough content for it. That is moot however because we have a community who do have the knowledge. The question here is to ascertain whether or not there is enough interest to make it worthwhile.

In hindsight it may have been better to name the options
The reason I put "Abstain" as an option is because it used to be that the forum system wouldn't let people see the poll results unless they have voted and some members may not wish to vote. Thus, they have the option to abstain from doing so.
