  1. There is a mooring on the service side.  I wouldn't recommend staying on the towpath side outside the gate; last time I was there, tins, detritus and possibly needles not to mention dog mess on the grass.  It's popular with the uncivil members of town.

John the lock and opposite are very good as well as the obvious attractions of ale and pies!  You also see clearly down to the bottom of the cut!

  2. Agree with TB.   Thrupp has good moorings, two pubs as well as the bus.  Osney also recommended.  The canal south of Dukes is not very inviting.  I know Oxford very well, it gets clogged with traffic all day and even the buses get held up leaving the city since bus lanes are only inbound!

On the extreme, go to Lower Heyford and get a train in, only 15 mins, though not sure about timetable now that COVID is in the mix.

  3. Watched Thompson" Celebration "dock at Flam, very professional use of the thrusters to bring along sideways.  Captain finished off by lighting a Marlboro on the flying bridge!

Back to reality, I sometimes find giving the tiller a sweep to bring the stern in, bit like a butty tiller but not as effective though!  Sometimes it works🤔

As advised by someone else. Go to Glasson docks and see what it will do on wide deeper water. Even a car satnav will give you a decent indication of speed.

Get the GPS test app for your phone. Mine is set for 0-10mph and I get a good idea of average speed - usually 3mph so 20 min between mileposts.

  5. Email message today about the south Oxford from Pigeon's lock to Banbury from CRT - totally overgrown and swamping Fountain's attempts to cut it back.

I've been around the 4 counties this month and the Shroppie visitor moorings are in a sad state.  My mate says the south Stratford is the same.

Back on the Coventry and fighting overgrown offside trees and limited navigation width as well as the overgrowing towpaths.  Dangerous for ankle injury and almost impossible to find the dog crap unless you stare at the mutt while performing, though other droppings still lurk to get into your treads or between the toes.

  6. Back in the 80's bridge 228 [Yarnton Lane]on the south Oxford was a cracker.  We knew it as "toot" bridge before they fitted traffic lights for single file use.  Great sport was had with the boat horn and hearing the screech of brakes.  It was legit though as the bridge is on a bend and very low, so we woz just following the COLREGS innit?

  7. A Willow Wren boat out of Rugby arrived at Hillmorton bottom lock and proceeded to open top and bottom paddles.  Lady arrives to ask if they needed any advice and was told to F Off. Said lady then asked if they recognised her - she was the owner of the yard and reminded them of the full briefing she had given them less than an hour or so ago which included instructions on how to use the locks.

If you are hiring from Kate Boats you are unlikely to get as far as the Cape on the first day, bearing in mind usual hire starting time of 2pm onwards. Personally I would do Stockton locks then moor near the Two Boats/Cuttle Inn for the first night, then the Cape/Budbrooke Junction on the 2nd night and Kingswood on the 3rd.

But Canalplan as mentioned will allow you to input all sorts of variables!

A better plan, especially as you will have other boats going your way and lengthening the lock flight transit times down Itchington 10 at that time. After 17th May, you can also eat and drink inside the pub if that is your bag!  If you share Hatton with another boat and get a good system going, you can clear the flight in around 2.5 hours.

You'll also save time and knocks if you can breast up providing the boats are similar in length +/- 5ft. BUT- untie before going through Stockton bridge 23; it is too narrow - I know from experience!!

  9. I had a share in Oberon and then Endeavour for 10 years.  They were good years before, as Howard says, over ambition and creative accounting took hold.  The current Ownashare is a different model altogether.

Challenger Syndicateships director Ed Rimmer served time for fraud; his wife Gill passed away.  She was also a director and company secretary when the company went into administration.

All details available at companies house beta online.

Ed also previously ran Black Price Narrowboats which went into administration in 1987 but now relaunched and rfenamed.

We have now arrived at Glascote and are moored just outside the basin. Unfortunately, the starter batteries have now given up completely and despite being fully charged last night, they now have insufficient energy to engage the starter solenoid! We have ordered new batteries but in the meantime, in order to get into Glascote Basin we will need to borrow some jump leads to start the engine from the domestic bank . . .

Then you'll be back in time for the enhanced bell ringing numbers in Cropredy on 17trh May!  Glad your trip went well despite starter batteries [story of my return to Cropredy Marina, but it had lasted 7 years so not a bad innings for an RN starter motor!]
