  1. Been sat on my deck (GU just south of Soulbury) working from the laptop for the last 3 days. Monday and Tuesday I'd say I saw 3 boats moving each day. Today i'm over 10 so far, several looked like marina dwellers (but looks don't mean everything - so me mum tells me).

Feel like there's quite a few not bothering with the don't bugger off to your 'holiday home' rule this weekend.

  2. Went riding down Abbots Langley way this weekend and saw loads of the signs quoted. As well as several makeshift signs by non-home moored boaters (why they stopped on such a busy stretch of they were concerned is beyond me)

this is the first sign I’ve seen up round Leighton Buzzard and it appears new (and better in my opinion)

Enjoy your boating. Life goes on but for a miniscule minority that will be unlucky.

Yes precisely. A tiny minority will die whilst many thousands will lose their lively hoods due to overkill.

  4. Evening folks,

2 or more years ago I bought some more solar to install, Bimble had some used panels for a good price, but when they (2 off) arrived I decided they were too large (full size) for my boat; so they've sat in the hall ever since.

Now I find myself one of the lucky ones working from home and thus am using more electric than normal, so want to get one of these panels slung on the roof haphazardly to help reduce the required genny run time. Not looking for the perfect install, just want to get at least one of them on the roof for now to help - I have a Honda 2.2kw genny but I still hate listening to it.

    My issue:

The panels are totally bare. With 4 tabs / strips / bands to solder to on the rear.

I've got some proper cable and connectors but I'm not sure how to wire on.

I've checked the panels and the 4 tabs are two positives and 2 negs. I assume the panel is split in two? Each side was putting out ~8V (in the shaded hallway)

I have a Tracer 40A (or 50A) MPPT controller, currently there are 2 off 200W panels fed into it, I think in parallel.

    • Is there a standard box I need to buy to attach to the back of the panel? - as my other two have.
    • Do I wire the two sides of the panel together in series?

Cheers for any help and advice

Pictures to be attached shortly, one of the blank panel in the hall, the other of the box on the back of one of the installed 100W panels.

  5. Well, stupid enough... I literally just found out they’re advising not to go boating. And in any case, my water only stretches to 3 weeks, so not enough for the, likely, months of this ‘lock down’

(the pump out stretches to 7 weeks; also probably not enough time)

    It's not actually that straightforward

There were always going to be problems with plush new housing where the boats using the facilities have to tie up just a few feet in front of the properties.

This is a key point, there is 2 or 3 feet between the poxy little yard the houses have and the rings.

Madness to design this way, they could have easily moved them back 12 ft.

On a separate topic, I've been stopped twice when walking through the estate to be told that the estate is private property (apparently the, non-canal side, home owner thought I'd missed the two big signs as I entered) I informed them I was aware and was on the public footpath.

    Yes you are!

Do your washing on the move or even moored up with the engine on, when its finished go fill with water.

If you haven't got enough water fill up move away then when washing is over refill with water.

Failing that there is a good laundrette in Berko ;)

Its not difficult to show consideration for others.

Well not intentionally. I'm not there for an hour with it on, put the washer on before I go if I have reserves, usually I have enough to do the wash cycle but not enough for the rinse (and spin) portion: As such the engine is usually on for 15 minutes when filling with water I'd say.

I try to be considerate (in life) to level in which I feel I would like - do to others as you'd do to yourself as they say. If I'd have bought that house I'd be happy with boat running engines for 15 mins while they filled up.

I'd counter that me having the hassle of going to a launderette is inconsiderate from the homeowners that bought the house next to the facilities.

As I said previously the reason for the closure is not known, given that the water point is (?) remaining open but the pump out is being closed it's more likely smell perhaps. Total conjecture (if thats the right word) to the reason of the closure at the moment.

In a similar rumor fuel vein: If the facilities are closed due to homeowner complaints, it's incredibly inconsiderate of the homeowners  (2 people appear to live there) to have this point, used by many people, closed to please 2 people.

So ignorant gits that leave their engines running whilst filling with water and don't show consideration for others will cause this facility to be closed.

    B'stards.

TBH if this leads to it being closed I'll feel mighty bad. That said I'm not running to be obstinate, but because filling with water is when I do my washing (else the washer is using my precious supplies), washer on means the engine really really should be on too. The minute it finished I shut off.

I also disagree strongly that facilities like this - which is a water point far far from the next one at Slapton, should be closed if it's in use.

Where did I say batteries are bad?  All I'm saying is that unless all the CO2 emissions and carbon footprints are compared you don't get the full picture. There are plenty of self styled experts on this forum that only give one side of the story to suit their own biased views.

While you may not have said it explicitly, your opinions come across against BEV tech. When actually it's by far the best alternative to ICE that we currently have.

I think IanD has supplied a pretty full picture in the post you quoted. So now they are compared we can clearly see that BEV is the technology that should and will be adopted.

I'm sure better technology will come along int he future to replace BEV, but that's in the future

  10. Could be, but then they'd be closing the water point too I'd have thought.

They've asked a couple of times if I would switch the engine off, both time's I've explained the situation and told them that there x minutes until the wash has finished, which they've been fine with. I'm not there for very long after all.

Maybe it is such antisocial behaviour that has led to the current situation.

If I am correct, (and I probably am not), cars may not have been improving in efficiency over the years, as well as us buying less efficient types of cars.

I used to work on test engines for Daimler / Delphi Diesel, this is the case. Basically as NOx attracted attention this resulted in lower cylinder temps which meant poorer mpg performance. Then emission control got so tight that manufacturers were forced down the route of exhaust gas after treatment. SCR injectors now feature on cars and have done for a while I think (I've since moved in to aerospace).

SUVs are typically classed as pickup truck kind of vehicles so I think they have different rules applied to them for emissions and for pedestrian safety.

Nah, it's back to the fore with Brexit as I see it, Covid-19 is a supporter of remain as I understand it...

The same criteria should therefore also apply to the emissions produced in making and charging EV batteries, Only then we would see the true picture.

Agreed, the true picture would be interesting. I mean it would still show how horrible ICE is compared to BEV, but I'd be interested to see it anyway. You got a link?

  13. I usually get looks of contempt when I'm emptying there, or filling with water. The looks tend to be more contemptuous when I've left the engine running, which I normally do as I run the washing machine when taking on water.

Anyway, would be very interested what the actual reason for temp closure is.

If it's removal of the facility that will be a real bugger as the next pump out isn't until Cow Roast when heading south.

I am fed up telling him that! Please could tell him from now on? I have looked at a couple of model S but truthfully I hate driving nowadays and want no cars in my life if possible

I have a 1 kw whispergen very small which was on when I got back to the boat and it was cold 2 weeks ago 4.4 kw of solar and a vawt make me self sufficient ta very muchly

    33 minutes ago, Flyboy said:

Sorry to dissapoint but I do know what a 'whispergen' is and it still runs on diesel or kero so you are not self sufficient are you, that's my point.

You clearly didn't know what a whispergen was, neither did I.

Peter's claim that he's self sufficient is correct/true - sounds like the whispergen is non-essential and occasionally used as a supplementary piece of equip

    Anyway, moving on.

So 16 pages, we can still burn coal, but the sale of horrid coal is likely to be banned, it's 2020...it's about time. The purpose is clear to do with emissions and hard to argue with.

I lived in the Peak District for a number of years and always knew the middle reservior as simply "Derwent Reservoir", so where the "Upper" prefix comes from is a mystery. Both the 1971 OS map and the 1968 Bartholemews maps do not use the prefix, nor does the official Severn Trent Water web site, but for some unexplained reason the more recent online OS map does use the "Upper" prefix.

From the Peak and never used or noticed the inexplicable "Upper"

    25k!!!

Not many ordinary folks have that much money to buy a car.

Never said they did, the post I was responding to said that they cost £60k, which some of them do, but others don't.

Personally the most I've ever spent is £5k on my mini. In the current fleet I have the Van: 1.4k, MG: 0.7k, BSA: 2.5k.

The lass however just bought a car for £22k, which is probably close to the actual average spent on cars here. Second hand average price being ~13k and new price being £33k. So I'd argue that 'ordinary folk' would be average and as such they do have ~25k to spend on a car.

For me the range isn't the issue. I live on a boat and park my car near to wherever my boat is.  I have never seen a parking space near the canal where I could charge my car.  I also work.  My place of work doesn't have charging either.  So electric cars are dead in the water to me unless I'm provided with somewhere to charge it.

There's some spots in MK near the Boat pub!!!
