  1. Arrr yes that would be a quicker option, thought of taking it on turns on the way up.
  2. Thanks will keep my fingers crossed there'll be volunteers about ?Yes we both need to be going in the same direction,I may have put the wrong place first, not very familiar with the canals, basically I'll be starting at atherstone bottom lock an finishing at the top lock. 3. Hi, bit of a long shot but is anyone going to be going through atherstone locks on the Coventry canal (hawkesbury to fazeley) tues afternoon/Wed morn who might appriciate a hand an be able to give one in return? Basically I'm bringing a boat down from Lichfield streethay wharf to cov an its looking as if its very likely the friend who said he could crew with me through the locks no longer can. Any takers .... ?
  4. Thankyou all again for the advice, its greatly appreciated, would be completely stumped without it. PS: tony dunkley Ive messaged you .
  5. Thankyou for the advice , Sounds like an all or nothing job then, either get it craned in where it is or water ways all the way (though pub costs wouldnt be a factor, post purchase I would be living on the bounties of nature or tescos savers whichever is more convienient, anyone know how duck tastes? ) .... So does anyone know of a good place near cov or brum that I could put it in? (coventry canal)
  6. Hi, I'm planning a route to get a 30ft narrowboat down from retford to coventry, I'm trying to keep the costs an time down by splitting the journey into road transport and canal transport (plus as the boat is out of the water its going to cost me anyway to get it craned back in, so I may as well include some road transport). There appears to be a lot of river navigation to get it down the first leg, (which as I'm a novice at moving a narrowboat Im keen to avoid), so I'm thinking of putting it into the first canal on the route which apprently is the trent an mersey canal on the burton to fradley mainline. Does anyone know of anywhere round there that a boat can be craned into the water? Many thanks Jenny
  7. Yeah absolutely the guy was upfront and not hiding anything, its a nice little boat tbh but the owner wont budge on price and the costs of a survey and new engine looming in the iniment future are quiet high, the work that needs doing will cost a decent amount including the replumbing of the stove. If I had a higher budget it would be considerable.
  8. I have done the above at a marina with several boats and gone, `ooh what a nice boat,' This in no way makes them anywhere nearer m y price range and overall was rather depressing alans suggestion I may wish to borrow 20k from a family member (an I assume by it being a hobby does that mean that you can afford a house an a boat, which is great and an enviable position but not one I'm quiet in at the present ) But borrowing from the bank is another option, just rather hate owing people, specially banks, money, might be something I need to get over. The owner has a generator and solar power both of which are included in the price. I would guess to get around that issue. thanks boat hunter P:S like your avatar.
  9. Thanks for the advice all went to have a look. It is a very nice little boat as in dry an quiet warm. Engine still runs but owner won't budge on price. Seems to know his stuff about boats so trust it won't sink. As for budget to save 20,000 will take me on current wages about4 years. Borrowing of family..... Well I'm glad that you guys have wealthy families it makes life generally easier. If my folks had 20k spare it would make their lives a lot easier too . But seriously thank you for the advice. Yes I am in the really want a boat mindset but too poor to drop (what to me anyway) is a load a cash on something that just eats more an more? The advice on here is great too. Combined hopefully it will prevent me buying a black hole of a boat?
  10. Hi as the title says I'm considering having a look at an old boat, manufacturer unknown according to owner, 36ft (1975) sides replated 4 years ago bottom not. Needs some work done inside but not enormous amounts (rewiring being the main issue.... apparently) .The owner says the engine block is cracked but the engine still functional an not leaking oil. Now I dont know a lot about engines but I know what the block is an it seems an unfortunately large an important part of the engine to be cracked. Ive read a little about repair via welding and stitching and neither seem great solutions; I am therefore assuming new engine in the imminent future required. Assuming the hull is sound(I know a big assumption but hoping the sides only were replated because the bottom didnt need replating and not because the owner who did the replating prior to the currrent one ran out of money) and the innards only need rewiring is it worth considering it (asking price £7500)? I'm wondering if the engine might potentially be replaced with an outboard as its a relatively small boat or an perhaps an SR2 as has been mentioned on other threads?
  11. I'm going to have a look at a 45ft steel hull with a grp top this week,( I hope not in such as state as yours was originally ) Been really useful to have a read of your blog to get some ideas of how much work I could practically do or not do on this one (advertised as requiring TLC although on talking to owner hull decent on survey 4 years ago) Thankyou for sharing and good luck with the rest of the refit, looks as if its going to look great
  12. This looks like a good investment no issues with space really so I'd have somewhere to store my motorbike; only thing thats stopping me putting a bid down is I'm a bit concerned about the tax; anyone got anything comparable or previous experience with boats that size and tax? (they say in the Q an A its ok on inland waterways as long as you dont have to turn it.
  13. arr I thought it was as a waterproof insert, that makes more sense. Like the problem solving.
