  1. Hi I'm about to buy my first narrow boat which needs a stove installing. I'm looking at having a lock gate diesel stove fitted, does any one have an idea of supply and fitting costs. My boat is 50ft. Cheers. Neil.
  2. HI, looking for a bit of advice. How cold would it be in a 50ft boat with no stove? the wife is always cold so she is concerned about this. Anyone have any experience? Cheers
  3. Hi, We are still boat searching, but obviously due to the time of year we are now restricted in selection. We now have at least decided upon what size and layout which has taken us from Xmas. Question is this.... when it comes to engines, we know the good and bad ones, but how much difference does it make if the compartment seems rusty? as a lot seem like this and it is offputting, yet the boats seem in tip top condition. We are looking at a Liverpool boat which appears to have a good fit out and ticks all the boxes but the engine is putting us off as there is rust in the compartment (Izuzu) Can anyone offer any advice? We would not really prefer a Liverpool boat as there are offputting reviews, but they also seem a bit mixed so maybe worth a chance.
  4. I am in the same dilemma. Do we buy older but better builder or newer but not as well known? has anyone heard of the builder Walker Brothers as there is a boat for sale 1994 which we are very interested in, although I am not sure as I cant find any information about the builder.
  5. Hi, I am interested to know how this went for you tutter? any follow ups? wishing you all the best
  6. lol! that sounds much more appealing. We enjoy being social but the caravanning did become a bit too much 'in your personal space' sometimes. I will remember the boat etiquette and thank you for making me aware, I wouldn't have had a clue - near to us there are always a few boats moored up together ish, is this a general rule of thumb wherever you go?
  7. so sorry folks, I made a very silly typo. It should have read 1995 not 1975. I guess that alters the whole thread of the conversation! apols. Thanks for the advice on the boat makes Mike. Its important to us that we get a good make rather than a more modern not so good make. Just our preferences, horses for courses and all that. Apols again
  8. Hi, Does age of the boat really matter in relation to make / condition? we have found a perfect layout and it all needs modernising, a 1975 , but at £42,000 it seems very overpriced as it would need another 8k spending on it. Or does the fact its a good make keep its value? also, could anyone advise me on what is a quality good make and which are the cheaper end of the scale?
  9. Hi, As ex-caravaners, I was just wondering if there are meetups or rallys or anything similar which the members of canal world may get together and do? Is there boat clubs and such? Sorry if this is a daft question, just thought I'd ask.
  10. thanks for all your replies, hope to have our boat soon
  11. Hi, Currently looking for a decent stern cruiser narrowboat with a budget of around £35k, but we are struggling! all the ones which seem good are sold but still advertised on sites, and there doesn't really seem like much left apart from the ones which have been for sale for ages. Are boats seasonal like static caravans in that there will be a huge increase in sales and availability after Xmas~? just wondering if anyone could suggest. A lot of what we have looked at to be honest, way overpriced for the shabby condition they are in. I know there is better out there, yet most say under offer or sold which look decent which made me think are we looking at the wrong time for selection?
  12. Hi, thank u all so much for your detailed replies. We are currently going to view this boat which I a 5 hr round trip! He told us is 7-1 because it has been replated and had a recent hull survey of which the engineer stated to the owner that it measured 7-1 and this might cause problems with certain locks. The boat is 1976 and completely overhauled outside and inside including engine and rebottomed and re plated all around. I take everyone's point about the locks, but as correctly identified, we do live in Warrington and only want it for leisure and not to travel the country so mabe this would be ok for our needs. How much do you think it devalues the boat? Thanks to all for the replies
  13. Hi, any information would be gladly appreciated. We are looking to purchase our first boat, and noticed that one we are interested in is 7-1 rather than the usual 6-10. It is 45ft long. Would this cause any issues with license or locks or insurance that anyone knows about?
