And offers you a umber of useful discounts on things like surveys, BSS inspections and even 5% at Midland Chandlers, (and although the Braunston branch always claim not to know, they always grant it).

I'm curious though how much of the proceeds from this auction will actually find themselves into HNBC coffers, and how much will go to (presumably) Malcolm Braine.

    Alan,

The owner of the items wishes to remain anonymous. As for the proceeds, the HNBC are charging for expenses and the owner of the items is donating a percentage of the final proceeds to the club.

  2. Seems a bit unduly prescriptive to be limiting the sale in this way - the majority of the stuff is 'cleared out the shed' bits and bobs which I'd have thought they would be keen to get as many bids for as they can.

And as for the 'proper' old stuff, do HNBC members not sometimes flog bits to make a few quid?

Smacks of the old Brooklands 'right crowd and no crowding' mindset to me. Sorry! (BTW there's nothing there which I'm grumpy about missing out on)

There is nothing stopping anyone who wishes to bid from joining the club, or finding a member that is willing to sign them in as a guest.

The club have to run the auction in this way, otherwise they would encounter a lot of legal restrictions.

  3. You need to factor in the length of the aft deck and bows into your calculations, if we are talking Norton Canes then they have a 3'6 aft deck and 5'6 bows.

Edited to add - sorry just realised Alan has said pretty much the same thing!

  4. The OP asked for best boat builders. I would include in this Aintree and Aqualine and Reeves etc. Topic seems to have strayed to what some on here consider superior, yet many, me included just see as old fashioned.

    Ian.

It must be old fashioned to build a quality boat.

  5. I encountered EMU carrying 17 tonnes of bagged coal from Alvecote to London, according to (I think) Mrs Pinnock.

    Not sure why...

    MtB

Emu was carrying for FMC Clover while it was undergoing a rebuild at Norton Canes.

Clover trades on the River Lea on behalf of South Island Marina at Ponders End who provide coal to various customers in the south and the Midlands.

  6. I actually put together the Spuyten Duyvel advert, although the £190k bit was something that Dominic added afterwards. He was tying to say that a boat to the equivalent spec would cost something that region today. I have no idea how much the boat cost to build at the time, but it was no where near that figure.

In terms of the shell there was nothing too remarkable about the boat, there was a modern engine installation which is far cheaper than having something such as a Gardner 2LW fitted. The shell didn't have features such as recessed panelling which is a popular extra. The customer didn't have the boat gritblasted either, this was something that was done about 2 years ago when the boat returned to Norton Canes for a repaint.

The price tag came about simply due to the amount of kit that was on the boat. The fit out was to a very high quality and the boat had a very high specification. If you started to work out what it would cost to fit a boat out to the same standard today it would soon start to add up.

The boat has always been immaculately maintained by the previous owners and there was very much a 'no expense spared' approach to the maintenance of the boat.

We certainly didn't get rich overnight building the boat, or any other boat for that matter...

Thanks Darren - I'd love to see pictures of the boat before it was saved. It's a real treat see-ing it now esp with the Bolinder pop-putting along.

    Mark,

There's a photo on Emu here in de-converted state prior to restoration. Michael and I are currently working on the website having only published it last week and are hoping to get a few more photos up soon.
