  1. Hi there, a bit longer than planned but here we go. I have finally uploaded pictures of the design development on to a blog http://thecanalboatproject.tumblr.com/ please take a look I would really appreciate feedback on the design. The most recent pictures show a 1/24th scale (sketch) model, which is why it lacks some detail. I am currently about to start the photorealistic 1/12th scale model so it is a good time for any input you guys might have for the design or model.. Some details: Aimed at leisure and boating holiday companies, as an apartment canal boat. Featuring an innovative sliding canopy which includes retracting hull sides that brings the inside visually closer to the water. A diesel electric hybrid system (serial) with electric motor in the aft deck and and diesel generator in the fore deck, combined with a large battery pack that provides 800Ah at 48V allowing many hours of silent cruising and days of of mooring activity. Additional power is also gained from solar panels on the roof. The one way windows give fabulous views of the canal without loss of privacy and hide the framework behind them. Fabricated steel hull and superstructure with prefabricated interior panels and a wooden deck. Designed with a simple and functional aesthetic that keeps the cost down whilst offering a luxurious experience. 46'x 12' 6'11" Air Draught 2'3" Draught
  2. If it works on a motorhome, then why not on a barge? I see what you mean by your other points.. although a folding up/down side would create a beautiful connection between the interior and outside.. and an easily accessible opening in to the barge...
  3. thanks for the links! Will keep these points in mind, my main focus at the moment is sorting out the overall layout packaging, to create an alternative interior, without compromising the boat side of things.. the start of a project is the best opportunity to introduce some really different ideas which can then be toned down.. I can appreciate the lines on this boat, but can somebody tell me why so many canal boats go for the small round windows? surely you want to get more light inside to make it feel bigger and a nicer place to live.. Really like your idea Dean....something like you see in large Winnebago's / caravan's - would be fab to have a boat designed thin enough to use all the canal system, but be able to convert to the comfortable width a widebeam provides with a few simple adjustments. I do like the idea of having a small "patio" area on the roof as well (obviously only to be used when moored), but would like it to have a collapsible railing around it for safety This idea, is growing on me.. expanding sides, or folding sides which could fold down and create a water level deck, but may be too complicated for the hull? or sides which fold up, wouldn't create a deck unless you access it from the roof.. would have to be pretty strong. Hydraulics would be the way to go with these ideas? Will be sketching this week so should have some drawings to discuss soon..
  4. Yeah that makes sense, the expensive part in car fuel cells is the catalyst, which is normally an expensive metal. In terms of packaging I guess it would be pretty well a straight swap, with the the fuel cell and batteries replacing the engine and fuel tank. thankyou, very informative and made me laugh I was thinking of incorporating more glass, than many of the current narrowboats.. will see when ive done some packaging ideas and sorted out those compromises.. plenty of food for thought
  5. Sweet, that is a very nice idea.. opens up some variations for the layout too. It never occurred to me to use on a boat, starting to be used more in the automotive industry now
  6. Nice boat. Its an interesting point which does crop up quite a bit when designing anything deemed a luxury, can any luxury be ethical/sustainable? I think the point is, that its all relative, to what you are designing.. you can choose to make stuff which is long lasting and is less wasteful in its lifecycle, or vice versa
  7. true, in the market report I used "driven by an ethical outlook", but i figure most people understand what is intended by sustainable i.e. low consumption, small footprint, renewable sources, etc
  8. Amazing response! thank you bang on, I will be making a model but it wont be going in to production, although never say never.. music to my ears great points, the idea should be commercially viable, so will have to take take that into account when choosing materials.. two possible business models come to mind at the moment, a) bespoke, one off hotel boat for hiring out a market changing production model, made in batches i presume probably easier to justify the first one thankyou, much appreciated.. having looked at quite a few house boats im keen incorporate new archetypes which arent so boaty.. although I appreciate it still has to function as a boat, im intending to work from inside to out.. fantastic idea, thankyou sir.. a similar idea I have had is to have a fold down deck/patio which would give you a nice outdoor space at water level. like wise I am keen to get away from the classic boat look You're right, although I have had many motor home holidays which are similar, albeit no water.. hopefully I can bring a fresh perspective.. I have also done a fair bit of reading and surfing research in to houseboats, barges and small/mobile homes to understand what I have to play with, and gain some insight form people like yourself Thankyou for the picture and all the info, much appereciated! Me too, either on top or a fold down one on the side.. That is a great example of a business model for a hotel boat can you elaborate?
  9. Hello, Im in my final year studying transport design at huddersfield university, I have decided to design a wide-beam barge for my major design project.. So far I have been researching the whole houseboat/canal lifestyle and have narrowed (no pun intended) my project down to a short wide-beam boat for 2 people, based on these points: Compact but spacious with enough constraints to make an interesting design project. Most of the wide-beams I have seen, look very similar, at least on the outside.. room for innovation? Sustainable - would be ideal for solar/renewable power, materials etc I enjoy designing furniture/interiors/things that move I would love to live on one. Would really appreciate any feedback or pointers from you guys, if you want to see some of my furniture please check out bee9.co.uk Hopefully I can post updates here as the design progresses.. Thank you
