Well we wouldn't be without ours it is an ideal place either for hanging wet clothing to dry or sitting out in the summer evenings and watching the world go by. Each boat we have had came with none but we have added one each time.

If it wasn't for some womens vanity they wouldn't have been bred in the first place as they were and the fur trade is still rife, using cats dogs and rabbit as well as baby seals and unborn lambs after their mothers throat has been cut to kill them. I just abhor all kinds of unneccesary cruelty no matter in what form.

Unless you are going before Mar 10th when booking is required, then between either 9 or 10 am till I think 4pm you just turn up and go as the tunnel keeper tells you to. He will make a quick check to see if you have a current licence then tell you to proceed as and when.

But above lock 42 is fine with a fairly long stretch before the last lock and plenty of rings if going that way now we always moor there.

We have always found that if we moor between those 2 locks the boat tends to get battered about each time lock 43 is emptied, have lost a couple of fenders there in the past.

I think I read in one of the Waterways mags that they have now been made to fit any PO. Will check and let you know.

The washing facilities at Red Bull are on the T&M just below the 3rd lock down from the Harecastle Tunnel, but we tend to moor above the 2nd lock not too far from Poole Aqueduct, as it is a little more restful with no battering about of the boats as the locks are emptied. It's not too long a walk to the facilities just more or less round the corner. Last time we were there they were very clean. A very good mooring place between there and Wheelock is Rode Heath opposite the Broughton Arms we tend to moor there even though we don't eat in the pub.

Since the animal rights people freed loads from a mink farm a few years ago there are many living and breeding in the wild. I have seen several on the T&M canal around Anderton and Marston, although one at Anderton was caught in a trap and subsequently despatched because it was after the ducks and hens that a chappie keeps there and had killed several of them.
