  1. I thought Stimpson had retired. A canal society I was involved with had an unfortunate experience with him years ago when he gave us an insurance certificate from a company who had no knowledge of our boat. It transpired that Stimpson had undertaken to insure the boat himself but had led us to believe we were insured with a " proper' insurance company

    Thank you!

We've been delivered documents to sign.  I asked about surveys a while ago, and I was told that the boat was surveyed every four years.  It seems reasonable to me that I should be allowed to see the most recent survey report before signing, especially as we are buying a share sight-unseen.  Does this seem reasonable to others?

Unusual for a relatively young boat to be surveyed every 4 years. The Boat Safely Certificate requires an inspection every 4 years. Could this be what is being termed a survey? The BSS is aimed at ensuring that a boat has safe gas and electricity on board so that it doesn't blow up and take out other boats. It is nothing to do with hull thickness etc.

Would anyone know/care if you booked for tomorrow and went today?  I think you would at least be trying to adher to the spirit of the agreement if not the exact letter.

I've wondered about that!  I usually remember to book a day in advance but I have forgotten occasionally and have gone onto the Bridgewater anyway. I survived to tell the tale 🙂

Aha, yes, i am indeed, lol.

The Manchester Ship Canal is a completely different thing regarding rules etc. I don't think you can go on it "for a few days" you can only use it to transit between Manchester, Ellesmere Port and the Weaver. I dont know all the rules now but perhaps someone could point you in the right direction.

Isn't it called freedom of expression? If CRT didn't allow them to have a stand someone else would be complaining about censorship, so CRT can't really win.

Cavalcade has nothing to do with C&RT. It is run by the IWA

Anyway why does it bother you so much?

It bothers me as I am a member of the IWA, an organisation which plays a major part in the campaign for C&RT to be given more money. NBTA , if all their notices calling folk to arms are to be believed, wants no price increases and better facilities.

If NBTA can publish a coherent leaflet which makes a sound argument then they might gain some support, but if as you obviously believe their aims are nonsense, then people will be able to see that and dismiss them as an organisation. So having a stand and publicising their aims could just as easily work against them if those aims really are unreasonable.

Bearing in mind that their target audience will be folk who come to see the boats (as opposed to boaters) do you think it is helping the overcrowding boat situation in London for them to encourage others to buy boats ? I wouldn't normally see an increase in boat owners a problem but it is a different situation in London with all these folk who signed up to continuously cruise only moving to access services.

  6. I have just read on FB that the NBTA are having a stand at Cavalcade and they are looking for people to hand out their leaflets.

I am extremely disappointed that the IWA  have allowed NBTA to have a stand. Especially as the aim of this years event it to publicise the fact that C&RT need more money.

Why, oh why, are they allowing people who actually campaign to deprive C &RT of money to have a stand and publicise their aims?

  7. Personally, I just can't understand why Allan Richards and co spend so much time making Freedom on Information requests and digging into the realms of C&RT papers to produce such negative posts here and on Narrowboatworld.. He never says if his delving produces something positive . It is all very one sided.

I, many years ago, took a case to the Ombudsman (and won) about licences for shared boats and Allan was helpful, as were other share boat owners,. However, thanks to Sally Ash BW changed the goal posts and another case had to be presented and Allan sort of took over the running. I stepped back when I saw that he was managing perfectly well on his own with the back up of other owners. I don't know what has happened since to make Allan so anti C&RT to the extent he is.

I liked Allan but not so keen on the person going under the name now. Wonder if it is someone else 🙂

Having asked for assistance in a specific location why is there the urge to suggest a solution 100 miles and 80 locks (7 days 6 hours cruising) from the requested location ?

I mentioned Northwich as the original poster said he was on the Bridgewater and was travelling  down to Beeston. No idea if he is on his way or if it is a plan for the future. If it is the latter he will pass the Anderton lift which is a short distance from the Dry Dock and a detour might fit in with his plans.

I did get a pdf certificate by email from  the surveyor (in 2020).

Ah, memory failing again ! mention of a PDF reminded me that we got that attached to an email. In days of yore we actually got a printed certificate bearing the BSS stamp and that is what I remembered. 🙂

Yes, I generally look at the expiry date on the certificate.

I must be missing something here, is the original hard copy of the certificate not available?

My annual EA river licence renewal requires details of my insurance and also when appropriate my BSS certificate, so I use that as my reminder.

I don't think you get a copy of the BSS certificate now. The details are posted onto your boats details area in C&RT and that is where I check when renewal is due although I seem to remember getting an email telling me that the BSS expiry is imminent.

Bearing mind I live in Scotland and spend a lot of time in the Highlands I probably have a good insight into Scottish midges. People say Avon skin-so-soft works, but not for me (and it stinks). The only thing that works for me is the netting.

Over the years I have tried many anti midge products , including Deet, and the only one which works for me is Skin so Soft BUT it has to be on before the midges find you . I also have net over the head thing which I have resorted to when I am too late with the Skin so Soft.

If plane times don't suit, I think your idea of a 2 day drive up, a few days on a boat then a 2 day trip back sounds good.

  12. I think splitting your week between Inverness and Fort William would let you do a fair bit of exploring or the area (including a train to Mallaig) . I am not up to speed about boat hire on the caledonian but as your time is quite short, a trip on Loch Ness would enable you to get afloat, albeit for a short time.

Re midges, I think they are at their worst in June but I find using Avon Skin So Soft, applied BEFORE the midges find you, works really well.  You would probably be safe from them out on Loch Ness though 🙂

OK. Do we know of anyone (boater or boatyard) experiencing any enforcement action from HMRC based on the Excise Notice ?

I don't think we do but we are keeping quiet about it 🙂 . I have heard on the grapevine that some suppliers are quite happy with zero propulsion for any boats but I couldn't possibly comment on that !

  14. 22 minutes ago, PeterScott said:

That sounds like an urban legend to me ... 🙂 Is there a reference to something in the legislation ??

If a boat never moves (apart from going for fuel) then it can claim zero for propulsion . It could either be a liveaboard or a leisure boat which never moved. I am pretty certain that is what the legislation said but in more flowery language 🙂

  15. The congestion on the canals in London has been mentioned and it might be worth your while taking a walk along the towpath to actually see how close you need to live to your neighbours and speak to boaters about how they cope with working full time and continuously cruising. If you can get a residential mooring life would be less stressful!

We went through Big Lock during last years Middlewich Festival.  Didn't realise until we came down through Maureens .  One of the bottom gates was a right sod though.  Hope it has been sorted by now.  Enjoy.

It hadn't been sorted when we last went through it in January!. The towpath side bottom gate I find almost impossible to close and I have been known to play the helpless female and summon help from folk sitting at the pub tables 🙂

That has to be applied to the wet paint with a sieve. Going to be fun trying to do that on 4 inch wide gunwales without losing most of it over the side!

I've done it - years ago. You just need to use a smaller sieve than the usual kitchen size and move it lengthways along the gunnel
