how I so wish we could have a series about true boating, different canals, different locks and how they work, what its like cruising through cities (and mooring there) , emptying toilets, all the real stuff. its not all green scenery and laughing at bumping off other boats (cant believe that guy just waved ).

For goodness sake! It was a crap photo posted for a bit of fun..for the most part it's been successful in lightening the mood on here. It's just a silly, fun thread....remember them? We used to have them a while ago with no problems...
Why the need to take it so seriously and start arguments?
Can we all just chill out a little?
Janet
I agree , if the post is not what you want to see, go on to the next one.

wouldn't be funny for the houses on the water front either I wouldn't have thought dependant where on the VM's they are

This may seem like a silly question , but why are cills not sloped? that way boats would not be able to 'sit' on them and get stuck. it may be that I am missing something really important so forgive me if I have had a blondy sort of moment

I can see 4 long snakes in the water

Thankyou. Very concrete ish, but am sure that it has its attraction.

I have just moved onto our boat which has been covered by the licence on the house. Now sold the house, so have just tried to change this info on my licence. I only have the option to put in the marina address. They advise it will take 5 days to make the changes and the option is not there to view the changes on the licence. I have sent them an email asking how I go about checking that the info I have changed is correct only to be advised that they will respond within 3 days . I don't know now whether my boat is covered or whether I am licencing the marina.
Received a very helpful reply from the TV license people. However, in themeantime, I logged back in to see that I was in fact licensing the marina. I have changed my address again which I managed to do manually and my postal address , which is different from my location address so I am now all licensed correctly. I must admit though, the notes regarding whether you need a licence, I don't think are very clear. It mentions a boat but only as a second home.

I wonder how many liveaboards with televisions take the 'moral high road' and actually buy a licence? very few, I would suspect.
I don't feel that I am taking the moral high road by paying for my licence. I am required to have a licence so I have one. Nothing morally high about that.

Too many are retiring, selling the house and not thinking about the future.
Maybe it is because they are thinking of their future that they are selling up and retiring to the water. My hubby and I are semi retired and have put a lot of thought into our boat and are thoroughly looking forward to our life on the water.

From what I saw, it was the holiday boater that could have done with a hand, maybe the lock would not have got broken then !

Personally, I don't think you are burning your fire hot enough. If you are closing the bottom "thingy" then you are restricting the air going through which will restrict the burning power. I have my bottom thingy (!) open all the time, only closing it down when I need to lower the temp i.e. when going to bed, or when it is too hot and need to reduce the fire, leaving it open enough to keep the fire going. By closing the air down, you will end up with a smoulder effect which will cause smoke.
edited to add, I too would not mix my coal. I stick with the one. Have tried Taybrite and Excel and Stoveglow(smelly and clinkerish). Now use Supertherm.

Lovely info about the canal. Just seen a working horse boat and some really old pictures of working wooden boats too

Havent seen the programme yet, but I would like to see a programme that follows a boater so that we can genuinely see what its like to be a continuous cruiser. Someone who is travelling the canals properly. Maybe several different CC ers on different canals. All about boats, boaters, cruising, buying a boat, selling a boat, what its like cruising through Birmingham, how different it is in London, what its like going through the Anderton lift or the Stoke Bruerne tunnel, there is a whole world of boating out there that I for one would find interesting. And I am a boater. ) rather watch that than a street full of people on benefits (not that ive done that though)

Is it best to remove clinker or leave it to eventually burn?
If the fire has gone out (ive turned it down too much) and the clinker are large bits, i usually shove to one side and start a new fire and then they burn in with the fire. If the clinker bits are small, i clean them all out as they can get stuck in the grate and this just blocks airflow. I find that it doesn't hurt my fire to give it a good clean and brush out now and again.

congrats on getting first one over, remember ours well too )

Ive been on my boat, in a marina for 5 months now and I have not seen 1 spider. Don't let a fear of spiders ruin a wonderful chance. Get a spider catcher (if cant bear to kill) just in case one wants to make friends

Hi just had a newsletter from the marina we are in and they reported "The Volunteer Group which worked with CRT had put in a large number of whips beside the towpath."
But despite google etc I can't find out what whips are (would be good if it was the political types but clearly not)
Please let me know if you can and is this an idiom specific to the Midlands? Or am I, as usual showing, how much lack of knowledge I have in public?
Thanks for asking that - we just read same and were googling too , )

You are a star. It was Mortons I was looking at and them who I contacted ) Thankyou once again
Online! Get yourself an iPad. Never miss or loose an issue ever again!
I normally read it online, but issues 98 and 99 are missing from the archive that I have on my pc.(as I tried to explain in 1st post)

Can you tell us month and year instead?
Sorry, Its for Dec 2013/Jan 2014 just a couple of months ago

I am looking for a copy of Towpath Talk, no 99. I have looked back through the archive editions and the edition I am looking for is missing. I have contacted them too, only to be told (twice) that they don't keep back editions, even though I pointed out that they have an archive.(?) I have now been emailed and told that no.99 is missing from their archives (which I already know). So I am hoping that someone on the forum may have a link or a copy?
Can you spot him?
