I've 5, which is plenty I've checked. But I've no heat storage tank and don't want to waste heating most of the boat while I'm not here. Whats more, my batteries aren't in the best of health and even just leaving the pump running for the ten plus hours I'm at work would not only run me out of electric but also ether burn off or put out my coal. In other news, I've put a fire brick in place at the bast of the boiler, so the fire has a place to keep nice and warm, then the flue gases heat the water. I've been running it for about 8 hours now and it seems to be doing well for what I need.

Hi Tim Nice set of instructions! I had a real job wriggling mine into place a few weeks ago. Thankfully the fireplace was new so no suet to deal with! After running it for a week now, I'm wondering if I should have but the back firebrick back in front of the boiler? I can't seem to keep the stove got enough to keep fuel burning properly when the central heating pump is on. So if I'm not carful I boil off my water D: - Foxy

Been looking at Morso Squirrel stoves to replace my little boatman. This isn't a thread to discus the alternative stoves I should buy, I like the squirrel on the side (I'm a sucker for commercialism) so I'm set on one of these. I've been focusing on the 1410 airwash, the cleanheat 1412 and the 1430 cleanheat, but want a comparison between them. Its hard to get a good comparison on the different sites. I'm not really sure the difference between them. And I should probably add I'll be adding a back boiler. Thanks! Foxy

Been running veg in my lil Corsa 1.5 for little over 35,000 miles now. Every intention of modding a narrowboat engine to do the same. I've no intention of making bio fuel. Waste of time IMO. Much better to just start the engine with a splash of hot water over the injectors and run on fuel heated by the cooling system. At 65oC its a thin as diesel. Filtering used oil is a bit of a pain though. 200L drum and wait for it to settle over 3 weeks is my usual way. Then just tap off the good stuff and pour it in the tank. Now to wait for someone to tell me how much it'll knacker my engine

Held my breath for a minute. The deposit wasnt a small one! And the facebook page still shows pictures from the same marina. Still a pretty close call though. Edit: Just checked my bank statment, deposit defo went to David Mawby Ltd.

I'm currently buying a boat from Castle Marina. This doesn't effect me as far as I can tell, but does make me wonder as the guy I'm deal with is called David. Originally dealing with Chris. Currently got a deposit down, and the boat I' looking at is having work done by a freelance engineer. Should I worry at all? Foxy

In the end I had Rick Topham do the survey. He was really brill and quite understand when I explained how out of my depth I felt with the whole thing.

I went with Rick in the end. Surveys been carried out tomorrow while I'm down.

Lacking any help I've decided to head up whatever that other canals called. Hopefully I'll make it to that place somewhere up there on that other canal and then decided what to do from there. Prolly go right up to the top bit and then around, coming back to the bit over the other place, and then finally to Saltair. Also, I might need a good canal map with names and stuff, cause you couldn't tell, I dont know many.

The insides have been modified a lot. It originally had 2 toilets and 3 bedrooms. Now has one living area, a very long kitchen then toilet and bedroom. I'm thinking of changing things around once I've got my hands on it to give area for a small workshop/pantry/safehold up front where there's currently a bedroom, and that'll still leave me with tones of room in the rest of the boat to do out how I want.

Hey guys. I'm buying a boat down in Nottingham, gonna be bringing it up to the Leeds Liverpool. I'm new to boating and have been warned the Trent can be a bit of a task, and was suggested I ask around if theres any experienced boaters around to give me a hand with it. If all goes to plan, I should be heading out from Castle Marina on Saturday, should be on the tidal section Sunday through Monday, up to Keadby Lock. Here's the summary from the canal planner (big block of text warning): First day of trip On the River Trent (non-tidal section), at Averham Weir. This is 21 miles, 7¾ furlongs and 6 locks and will take 7 hours 29 minutes. Second day of trip On the River Trent (tidal section - Cromwell to Keadby), at Torksey Junction (a safe mooring on these tidal waters). This is 24 miles, 5¾ furlongs and 3 locks and will take 7 hours 4 minutes. Third day of trip On the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation (Stainforth and Keadby Canal), at Bonnyhale Road Narrows (a third of the way between Vazon Road Swing Bridge and Thorne Swing Bridge). This is 30 miles, 3¼ furlongs and 1 lock and will take 7 hours 56 minutes. Fourth day of trip On the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation (New Junction Canal), at Sykehouse Lock (nearly at Sykehouse Lift Bridge). This is 15 miles, 5½ furlongs and 2 locks and will take 7 hours 30 minutes. Fifth day of trip On the Aire and Calder Navigation (Main Line), at Castleford Junction. This is 18 miles, 5 furlongs and 6 locks and will take 7 hours 30 minutes. Sixth day of trip On the Leeds and Liverpool Canal (Main Line - Wigan to Leeds), at Kirkstall Forge Staircase Locks Nos 8 to 10 (a third of the way between Kirkstall Wharf Bridge No 222 and Horsforth Road Bridge No 216A). This is 13 miles, 6¼ furlongs and 13 locks and will take 7 hours 29 minutes. Seventh day of trip On the Leeds and Liverpool Canal (Main Line - Wigan to Leeds), at Hirst Lock Footbridge. I tried to look through the forum, but didn't find a right lot. Sorry for not trying harder, but hoping the straight forwards title of this thread will help other people find what they are looking for easier in the future. I'll look up what happened to Doris. I dont think people take this as a valid excuse (on any forum in my experience.) Makes these places feel pretty hostile at times, but I find it best to just nod and smile.

I've been told a few times to stay away from anything that doesn't have a steel top construction (the sides and roof of the cabin are made of something like wood and fiberglass instead, or something similar.) Why are they so looked down on? Do they rot through over time or something? Whats the advantages to a full steel top? Are there any advantages to having a wood and fiberglass top? - Foxy

I'm looking at boats everywhere so trying to get a general idea. Most are in the midlands, either side of the peaks.

I have no clue what I'm doing when it comes to sorting out a pre-sale survey because I never thought I'd get to this stage! So here's some questions: - How much is it going to cost me for the survey? (not including lifting the boat, we'll get to that later.) - How do I find a surveyor? - Will I have to be present at the survey? - Do surveyor's work weekends? -Whats their availability? (days, weeks, months notice etc.) -And finally for all you eager beavers, how much would it cost to have the boat lifted and what sort of options should I expect to have (crane, dry dock etc.)? How easy is it to fit a gauge? And just out of curiosity, how big is your watertank?

Been looking through the threads for an answer to this. Whats the rules on mooring? Its pretty obvious you're not aloud to moor where signs tell you not to and not to moor at the mouths of locks and bridges, but what about areas where there's no towpath? Theres a nice woods up the canal in Shiply, I'd love the idea of for a night mooring up to the opposite side of the bank to where the towpath is. Is that aloud? What ells is or isn't aloud with regards to where you decided to moor? - Foxy

If you keep it at full throttle, does it eventually come back to life, or is it only when you let off the throttle, then back on again after a little bit that it comes back?

Just a queerie, might be stupid question. When buying a second hand boat, if it currently has insurance, is it still valid for the new owner? I ask because I recently came across an ad that said BSC till next year, with insurance. I'd be suprised if so. - Foxy

It'd be very appreciated if you could, but I feel reasonably confident I'll be able to conduct a thorough poking around if I end up going it alone, so no pressure. Also will be coming down by car, so lifts available if it helps.
