All I can say is you must be reading a different comment. I can see anything that is rude or arrogant. If requesting a clarification is arrogant then I wonder what things are coming to.

That’s your opinion and we have already ascertained we are in different clubs. Clearly your’s has lower standards or at least lower expectations. But then several first class contributors have left this due to the mentality of some. To be honest I can understand why.

Probably why Tony gets so many problems resolved and saves those of us not so knowledgable hundreds of pounds. What do you bring to the forum?

I think it is you who is nit-picking, by the way, I don’t belong to any club!!

What has that to do with being bloody rude and arrogant which is what he was. It matters not what money he has saved you or what I or anybody else brings to the forum. He was out of line and not for the first time. And clearly you do belong to a club. Fortunately not mine though.

The other aspect of using magnets, is theft.

Thought of that too. The boat next to me has rigid panels screwed to brackets stuck on with Silkiflex. I could nick one of those panels in pretty quick time with the aid of a screwdriver and wire cutters. The Silkiflex joints don't look that secure either.

I think Mr Traveller has already made his mind up and was asking for reassurance perhaps.

Not so, I was after thoughts based on experience rather than opinion and I got one very useful one for which I am grateful. My initial post said "I am thinking of fitting".

  5. Oh that sort on nit-picking - the type you are famous for. People like you need three pages of info when for most a couple of lines will do. To be honest I would rather you just did not respond. You are only out to try and score points and I am not interested. Obviously the old Canalworld mafia still exists in what they see as their private little club. Get a life son you are looking tired.

I have a similar setup. The idea was to see if solar would be worthwhile for me or not, and to see how panels might perform where I am moored . I used magnets and flexible panels. I got 12 of these magnets https://www.guysmagnets.com//magnetic-products-c2/vehicle-mag-pad-1-p194/s199 and image.png.5d8b0180fc601c5834544a2cc401169b.png2 of these panels.

The idea was to check the panels location and fit and see how I got on with them before I upgraded to something better and drilled holes in the roof etc.

So Far, so good. I don't need much power  as if we are on the boat we are usually cruising and using the engine . The panels are more for a trickle charge and a boost in between weekend cruises

The panels survived the storms a few months ago and I appreciate they should really be stuck down for heat dissipation and protection from flexing etc. but I am happy for now and will look to upgrade to something better later on if I need to

That is exactly what I was planning and there are several similar installations around our marina, although I have not been able to catch up with the owners unfortunately. Your shortcut to the panels you selected is not working for some reason - any chance of a rerun 🙂

I guessed that was what you were intending, but it was far clear.

Your money, your choice but it is not a choice I would make, especially as they are now unsupported along their length with a gap below, so they can flex in the wind and with snow.

So what is so unclear that you had to guess! And the bigger the panel the more fixing points so flex should be minimal - the risk is possibly no greater than wind ripping off my existing fittings which are stuck on and that has not happened ..... yet anyway.

Have you already made up your mind ?

Pretty much yes. There are a few around me that have been working well enough for a long time now and, as a leisure boater, my demands are not high. I understand the product is also much better than it was and of course they are now cheaper.

  9. @Loddon Why "don't"?

I have limited knowledge of solar panels, but when we were sorting ours out, flexible panels were not considered. Trapped moisture being the first consideration.

That would not be the case if they were mounted via the magnets as there would be a gap between panel and roof.

  10. I am thinking of fitting some flexible solar panels of a type with fixing holes in each corner. The idea is to fix the panels by using Neodymium magnets. Any thoughts on this and suggestions on what strength the magnets should be? They quote a vertical pull based on kilograms, which is something of a mystery to me!

    Thanks

  11. What are peoples views on the below comment that is wandering around that awful place called Facebook. I always appreciated a Transformer was better but I certainly never believed a Galvanic Isolator was useless!
"It is now a well-proven fact that in highly populated marinas, galvanic isolators are being activated by the stray currents on the shore side of the galvanic device, so rendering such a device useless."

  12. That is a very sad tale, very sad. Having lived in a Broads village and cruised/sailed the area extensively I am surprised that there have not been more like it. Too often boats are seen with rowdy crowds on board. The summer months are sometimes much like a procession of booze cruisers. All nice enough folk I am sure but in the wrong place for their kind of enjoyment. SO sad when what should be a joyous occasion ends in such a way.

Well I’m encouraged to have a go at cleaning my engine bilge by these stories of folk with apparently odourless engine rooms. It’s a bugger to get at because the bilge compartment is pretty much the same size as the engine.

I think it’s a reality of vintage engines that they seep diesel, oil and water and to suggest it’s a lack of maintenance that causes an old engine to smell like an old engine is uncharitable. A lack of cleaning may be an issue but if you build a bed over the engine it doesn’t lend itself to keeping the engine spotless.

It also constrains airflow around the engine which is another reason that engine smells may linger. My engine doesn’t spend the day on show through a pair of open side doors in an engine room which also ventilate the space.

I’ll stick with the advice to the OP that there is a risk his bedclothes will take on the smell of the engine room, be that diesel, oil or roses.

I am with you on that and as I said earlier the idea of a bed over the batteries or webasto heater and the like does not sound good to me.

  14. Sleeping in (as oppose to next door to) a room where the batteries are and where they maybe charging and possibly giving off some nasty fumes does appear a risk to me. Not to mention being over what might be a wet and somewhat oily bilge and any other appliances that might be out there, such as heating. Must admit I have never been on a narrowboat where the engine compartment was not the other side of a steel bulkhead but appreciate there will be those which predate modern build standards.

As I understand it it goes before Parliament on Wednesday.   A foregone conclusion I suspect because Tory MPs will be afraid of being thrown out of the party as Alexander did with those who disagree with him.

Take your point but not so sure the threat of being chucked out is so potent now - there does seem to be a growing willingness to question/oppose. In this instance it is obviously just a matter of routine given the opposition have been pushing for such a course.

Like all the other decisions that weren’t?

Don't know about that, we are talking specifics here.

    New Government commitment

On Wednesday 30 September, Matt Hancock (Health Secretary) promised the Commons that “for significant national measures with effect in the whole of England or UK-wide” the Government would (a) consult parliament and (b) hold votes (wherever possible) before regulations come into force. He also promised that there would be regular statements and debates in parliament, and more opportunity for parliament to question government scientific advisors.

Why has the lockdown been announced but with a 4 day warning, seemingly designed to guarantee a few days of partying and driving around the country to be somewhere comfy for the next week weeks?

In France the PM went on tv at 6 pm, announced a lockdown from midnight, admittedly after the president announced the move a day earlier, but still with much less notice.

Oh, and here again, we have to fill in a form each time we need to leave the house, and can only do so under certain circumstances, and it makes one consider if one actually could justify that journey to a gendarme. Why not do the same in England?

Is it not because it has to be put to Parliament first?
