  1. I remember the name Di Blasi from the 90s as they used to do folding mopeds (powered by petrol engines I think)

It seems they now do an automatically folding  electric scooter Folds to the size of a suitcase at the touch of a button (what size suitcase one wonders)

Anyway here it is - probably a bit Italian and also probably quite expensive

  2. I haven't read the thread in detail but would be interested to hear how you get on with it.

I don't think electric propulsion for canal boats (other than small ones with regular electric hookup) is a valid option at the moment. Would be nice if it was but taking everything into account (not just silence :) ) I just don't fancy it.

I like electric boats. I have an electric kayak and electric dinghy and an electric day boat but both my canal barges are -currently- powered by diesel engines.

If it becomes sensible (financially and reliability-wise) then I may consider electric as it is definitely a Good Thing.

For the record I think you will end up putting a diesel engine in with a gearbox and a shaft connected to a propeller.

It would not be the first time.

  3. Me too :)

One of the things I like about finding old rusty scrap with the magnet is if it is something useful like a sex aid there is some sort of direct link with the person who lost it. For me its like a time machine :)

Its a pleasing item anyway and I do appreciate all the comments about it.

  4. That's pretty impressive for a boat you can tow behind a 4x4 (Daihatsu Fourtrak?)

I saw a Caracruiser recently and I did start thinking how nice it would be to be able to deliver the boat to where you want when you want :)

For this I would need a crane and a low loader

  5. I think there was a barge to rent in Limehouse marina for about £1400 pcm or something. Unless you go for the towpath which is very busy (I came from Greenford to Limehouse today and yes it is Busy!! ) then living in London is going to cost quite a bit, realistically. It would almost be worth road transporting your own boat there and back or buying a boat specifically to live on the towpath then sell it on.

  6. Residential moorings in London are about £10k a year (places you mentioned).

How much is it for a mooring in the area your boat is?

There may be some sort of balance problem financially I think.

I have a residential mooring in London and we are considering going to France but taking our boat with us..

  7. Shanks' pony.

What about an electric self balancing unicycle

Honda used to do a little motorbike called a Monkey Bike. They fold down very small. I think there are Chinese versions as well.

One of my dream personal transportation devices is one of those old motorised bicycles they used to do. Looks like a normal bike but has a little Villiers engine on it. Quite a few of them in France.

Looks like the Chinese do these too

  8. Er?.......someone wishing to break ice?

    That would be a tragedy.

    George ex nb Alton retired

Do we still get ice ? I haven't seen any of any thickness which would need a special boat for quite a long time. Obviously it is an ice ram but designed for a time when there was often very thick ice about. This no longer seems to be the case.

I agree it would be sad if it is removed but I still think it probably will be.

We seem to be talking at cross purposes. The first two lines refer to TYCHO's ice breaking blade, and the third maybe to PROGRESS? Or maybe not.

What's an average boater? Someone who likes to be on a boat, in it or out of it, it doesn't matter. . . . Now who said that . . . ? Ice breaking blade or 70' ex-working boat, if it gives pleasure - and that's about all the cut is used for today - so be it.

I was talking about Progress in the third part yes. Sorry it was a bit confusing.

I also found the 'average person' comment odd - if it is of no use to the 'average person' then its of no use to anyone as there just isn't the ice about for it to break.

If someone gets pleasure from it then that's all that matters - that is certainly true :)

  9. While condensation is not a problem at this time of year if you were living on the boat for the winter there is a chance of a fairly large accumulation of water in the bilge. Depends on heating system, insulation, activity level (Tina Turner  )and occupants.

Interested to know what you mean by "the recesses" I guess this is the gaps between floor bearers?

    (Overlapped with Bizzard a bit)

  10. No use to the -average- boater? Who would it be if use to and for what?

Someone will take it off soon I reckon.

There was one bidder through Ebay who failed to follow through with the purchase.

A second person had been looking at the boat with interest, but they too have decided not to purchase.

The boat is still for sale. This from the vendors wife today.

It does look nice in the photos.....
