  1. However, this is not a school and the guide book is exactly that, unless you can cite some examples of boaters being in trouble for not following its advice.

You seem to misunderstand me. I am not talking about guidance produced by a school I am talking about national guidance produced by the authorities who had then control over schools - just like this is guidance produced by an "authority" that has control over the canals. A reasonable comparison I believe.

I suppose I should just accept that there are people who are unprepared to accept that organisations that have control over something have a right (I know you won't accept the word right but I can't think of a better) to issue guidance and expect those using whatever they provide to follow it.

I suspect the more people who take your attitude the more likely it will be over the years that the CRT will seek (and probably get) the powers to impose its will on boaters.

  2. So if I ask you to leave gates open because that is the most sensible way to leave a lock would you be selfish if you exercise your right to disagree and continue closing them?

If you made a request to me that wasn't over ridden by either law or the wishes of somebody who in my opinion has more right to request how the situation is handled, of course. However in this situation I feel the BW/CRT have the right to request I close the lock gates and I am afraid they have more credence for me than any individual.

Its a bit like the NT telling me I should always close a gate and you saying its more sensible to leave it open. I am afraid the NT would win.

I also incidentally find it amazing that so many people on the forum complain about the behaviour of new/hire boaters and then decry what is (as far as I know) one of the only easily obtained reasonably simple & comprehensive documents they could use to get some basic idea of what they should be doing.

Imagine the scenario person just booked their first canal holiday reading the forum seeing members saying words to the effect of its rubbish its wrong don't read it ignore it will they read it and be slightly more prepared? I don't think so.

  3. Is this not the case that the legislation covering the the use of the canal system is now not fit for purpose for the 21st century. The canals were a different entity in 1962. Do we need new legislation which defines canals its use, the role of CRT and its powers.

You are very probably correct however, I can't help but feel with a bit more cooperation and less "you can't make me" things would probably potter along reasonably smoothly.

  4. The situation of the guide is to me a bit like much of the highway code - guidance but most sensible people wouldn't ignore what it says. Why should a guide for canals be any different apart from the fact the consequences of not following the guidance may be less.

Before anyone brings the law into the argument yes parts of the highway code are law but much (most?) is only guidance.

I was also under the impression that as a general principle where guidance was provided you were on the firmest ground if there were any problems if you had followed it to the letter.

I just can not understand why in the boating world (or at least this forum) so many seem to feel the whole system has to operate in a way they prefer rather than the way the organisation who have the repsonsibility for the canals prefer.

  5. Whilst the OP's possible race issues had not crossed my mind, if you look back over this thread you'll spot that despite a few folks initial help, (as would be expected of CWDF) the OP had suddenly indulged in a mahoosive rant and series of insults, followed by the demand to be removed from the Forum, and a 24 Karat flounce.

At that moment I there was a discernible reluctance from members to offer any further assistance.

It was possible that event was caused by 'an issue' in the OP's life - - but the OP has recently 'de-flounced', though I, for one, am still of the opinion that all is not well, and that my assistance would not be appreciated

You will notice I did say wrongly - however it appears to me that it may (just may) be a partial reason for his/her attitude particularly if they happened to have had a hard time due to race over the years.

I can fully understand members of the forum not being willing to help after the rants however I didn't read the "halfbreed" post as addressed at boaters more a reflection of the posters stress and frustration.

After all in my experience the boating world is rather heavily white caucasian in racial type.

  6. The fact that CRT seems to be trying to divide and conquer has b een mentioned. It doesn't need to. I have never come across any group of people who appear (NB appear) to be so divided while pursuing a common interest.

People who don't use marinas against those who do, NBs against cruisers, steel against fibre glass, pumpout against cassette etc etc.

Until the people who use canals put aside their differences and present a united face to CRT and the world many things they don't want will be brought it.

Incidentally Luctor I am sure Nick is buying coal etc regularly just not as often as you do. Once every 10 years can be regular biggrin.png

  7. I sometimes wonder about this using words and trying to disguise them from children. Any child who has reached a sufficient reading age to be fluent in reading this forum will know all the words (and perhaps some we haven't thought of) they will recognise the disguised word for what it is and in their head read it as if the word had been written in full.

To me there are only two things to do 1. not use the words in the first place or 2. Realise that any attempt to disguise them fails.

If it fails and children read the word as what it is intended is there any point in disguising it?

  8. I am puzzled by the way this thread is going. To me it appears most (everybody?) want the canals to be at the very least kept at the standard they are and preferably improved. However everybody seems totally against CRT raising money to do this.

You cant have it both ways folks.

  9. I too have lived in the country and worked with animals all my life

Unfortunately I have been attacked and injured by humans. Should they be governed by different rules? Or , like Carl, is it ok to throw themin the cut too if off a lead smile.png

Definitely throw them in the cut but make sure they are holding something heavy first! clapping.gif

  10. I suspect the only way you would find a ready made one is to search for a caravan breaker and hope they have some very old caravans. I have seen one for 25 years and the caravan was old then.

However as mentioned above they wouldn't be difficult to make. If you are making one yourself ensure the U brackets are nice and deep. When our caravan had one the youngest put her feet up and pushed on the other girl in bed. Result total collapse of the structure dumping top child onto lower child. Fortunately the pipe missed both of them.

  11. There does appear to be a link between decline of mink and the increase in the otter population. However I don't know that it is due to Otters killing mink rather than two carnivores choosing not to live in the same habitat and the Otter being bigger and stronger and dangerous to the mink if it came to a territorial dispute.

The decline of Mink has been greatest in the West and North where Otter populations are greatest. Mink appear to be still increasing in the East and South.

  12. It isn't really that satisfying! On my first ever boating trip 40+ years ago a fibre glass cruiser came out of the boatyard at the pontcycyllte viaduct as I was coming down from Llangollen. He took no avoiding action or changed speed, despite my best efforts we struck him amidships with quite a force. The only visible damage was a wooden "plank" which ran along the side about 4" x 1" which had a dent in it as if it had been hit by a sledge hammer.

As somebody once wrote "No wrecks and nobody drownded fact nuthing to laugh at at all".

  13. Just for interest: the riparian right allows the owner to forbid mooring to his land, or to permit it for his own or other’s boats, and no-one but himself can exercise that right – but when no boats are there, he has no right to stop others from exercising a right of navigation across that water if none of his boats are present. So if he wishes, for example, to have no boats stationary in front of his garden that’s his prerogative, but he can’t stop anyone from cruising alongside in legitimate use of the water.

Things must have changed considerably. Many years ago when I qualified as a British Canoe Union Instructor you certainly required the riparian rights owners permission to travel over the water. To the extent that on one river we used you had to pass certain points on a particular side of the river as one owner gave permission and the other didn't.

  14. One day I will work out why I sometimes can't post underneath the quote!

Following Bazza's idea I-spy books can add the touch of game/competition by having points for what they spot.

Things to do while travelling between locks....

How about small reference books that helps young-uns to identify trees, wild flowers, and other plants. The boat will be going slow enough to give them time to look them up - or they could photograph them and then save the photos to look things up on the internet.
