The elephant in the room is planning permission. Planning laws are very powerful and deemed very important in the UK, thus are fiercely enforced and protected. There's much bigger fish than canal residential moorings which can't get the development they need due to planning. Basically, it’s seen as forming the fabric of what makes UK what it is now, so it’s unlikely any noticeable change in philosophy will come about from any of the powers-that-be.

But CRT don’t need planning permission for further visitor moorings or leisure moorings?

The problem is, if they give advice, it will be taken out of context, publicised and widely condemned/criticised by a vocal faction of boaters. So they are careful to stick within the law, which is DELIBERATELY vague to allow a wide variety of cruising styles and canal use cases.

so we’re left with issue licences, take the money and deal with the consequences,

    fine by me

But they do have the power to do that under the 1971 & 1983 Acts of Parliament.

They are not 'inventing new requirements' (or laws)

inventing/tweaking/adopting/changing/adapting/ improving which ever way we look at it, I’m not against any if it’s for a betterment of things.

anyway, for me to get a traders license there are a few hoops for me to jump through, not many, nothing serious, all doable. And every now and again another hoop is added. Things are a little stricter (perhaps just a tad) than they were when I first applied for a trading license 8 years ago. Not much, it’s all still very simple, very very simple, but it perhaps shows (to me) an effort by CRT to  take a stock of what’s going on.

Why can’t CRT add a few hoops for those (like me) without a home mooring?

Simple stuff such asking “ where do you intend to cruise?”

then when someone says the Peak Forest Canal between Whaley Bridge and New Mills they can be told in advance how that ain’t gonna work.

Now I’m not getting into whether CRT can refuse selling a license but they could advise better.

Perhaps agree or encourage a more personal pattern of movement before/whilst issuing a license?

or should CRT issue licenses regardless and take the money?

it is much needed money in the bank after all?

Rather misses the point! The ability to handle a boat is not the issue. What matters is that someone applying for a boat licence without a home mooring needs to demonstrate to CRT that they intend to use the boat bona fide for navigation, and not merely shuffle around a limited area with almost all stays being of 14 days duration.

    True,

I threw it in as a devil’s argument, kind of,

perhaps having to obtain some sort of helm certificate would put off plenty of fly by night boat owners,

so how can one demonstrate they will use the boat bona fide?

Driving competency is an interesting idea but it misses the mark because the requirement to satisfy the board ONLY relates to CCers, not home moorers. CRT can't impose a driving test on home moorers, so why should one be imposed on CCers? I suspect such a test would be deemed unreasonable.

Something more appropriate to the anticipated cruising would be more reasonable.

    ok, fair enough,

    it was only a suggestion,

    and you’ve pissed on it,

    and of course it’s unreasonable

apologises for trying to take the same old same old conversation out of its loop,

if your happy in the loop,

    stay in it,

why are you hiding behind rules when CRT are readily changing them?

2 posts ago you didn't realise the applicant needs to satisfy the board at all (on the 'cruising' required). Might be worth reviewing the actual wording of the legislation at this stage.....

"the applicant for the relevant consent satisfies the Board that the vessel to which the application relates will be used bona fide for navigation throughout the period for which the consent is valid without remaining continuously in any one place for more than 14 days or such longer period as is reasonable in the circumstances."

My understanding is that CRT can't refuse a licence if the boat is insured and has a current BSS certificate,

    yes, mine too,

but with CRT making current changes, as in the new surcharges, perhaps CRT could increase their creativity and come up with some idea how to keep a check on things rather than just take the money.

    🤷‍♀️

Atherstone would fall into your definition of posh then, don't let that put you off though, I think most butchers have to do the neon marinades nowadays but they deffo ain't posh and I think there pork pies and bordering on the best I've eaten

don’t get me wrong, I don’t dislike posh,

    I can do posh 👍

Peter Coates as Alrewas is also very good. They have their own abbatoir and source local animals.

    Yes I like them too,

for me they’re what fall in to the posh and fancy butcher shop category,

where they have lots of different flavoured stuff and maybe their own trays of different recipes of marinated meats,

the butcher’s counter at Great Haywood Farm Shop is another example and I like that too,

but too much choice confuses me

and my favourite of favourites has to be the counter at the back of Todmorden’s in door market, on the right,

    nothing fancy but high quality,

most of their stuff is kept in their walk in fridge and bought out to cut to size in front of you,

and for Black Pudding the butcher in Whaley Bridge up the hill opposite the CoOp

I’ll make a point of looking for the butcher’s in Atherstone next time I pass,

Penkridge has a fine butcher too,

    good for pies and samosas

    🤤

Just thought I'd give a view on our first impressions of Droitwich marina:

    Plus

like the opening the gate from your mobile phone thing!

    quick walk into Droitwich

    quick walk to the pub

all paths are not waterlogged - not used to this!

lots of shops in droitwich as well as parks etc

    minus

none yet but suspect it might be locks quickly whichever way we go!

price of diesel might be a shocker?

It was the most expensive I bought last year.

    anyway, good luck there 👍

    they seemed very nice people.

Here’s a neat solution, at Ware, I wonder if it’s ever been tried and tested?

As it happened when I passed back through this lock they had divers fixing a ground paddle,

While waiting I had a chat to the other workers and I asked about the stop planks,

they said it’s a nightmare pushing the planks down with rods,

(The lock here at Ware is the responsibility of the Environmental Agency and Little to do with CRT)
