Hear hear Fortunata!
I've been an electrician/electrical tech for er... years, but just before Christmas I came across something new to me....
One of the storemen where I work (who we will call Gavin*) had got hold of a multimeter, and complained to me that every time he used it to check a socket (apparently he was decorating and wanted to be check the sockets before papering) he was getting a shock, and all the lights in the house were going out (ie. the RCD was tripping), and could I please take a look at it.
He eventually bought it into work last week, and even though it was a cheap one, I couldn't find anything wrong with it...
On further investigation it transpired that he had been used to using an old neon screwdriver (where you just touch the screwdriver end to the live) for many years previously...
Guess what he'd being doing? He had been holding one of the test probes while touching the other to live!!!! Doh!!!
Just goes to show that even the simplest things can be misused!
The moral of this story is that if you don't know what you are doing - ASK SOMEONE WHO DOES!!!

PS - I wonder if I could persuade Gavin* to show my ex wife how to use a multimeter?
