  1. Does anyone here have experience of running a multi-fuel Aga/Rayburn on a narrowboat? I'd be interested in comments... Thanks Allan

  3. Thanks Tony... I've seen figures from 1 to 4 hours per litre (I guess it depends on how high you run it!!!) so you're broadly in line with that. For your information - I've just posted a topic on Aga and Rayburn cookers (sorry haven't worked out how to post a topic link yet...) The website I've mentioned in that topic contains a note "The Pressure Jet burner is fully automatic firing & greatly REDUCES oil consumption" I don't know if this is of interest to those with Squirrel stoves, but I thought it might be as I've not heard this mentioned before... Allan
  4. I'm researching and considering the merits (or otherwise) of Diesel Aga or Rayburn cookers which also supply central heating and domestic hot water... I was looking up the possibility of converting them to run on Bio-diesel if/when the need arises, when I stumbled across this site which may be of interest to others: Traditional Cookers with the fuel conversion information and figures here: Traditional Cookers Fuel Conversion Disclaimer: I have no connection to the above site, and I post the link here as it contains figures and information on these cookers that I've not seen anywhere else - I hope this may be of interest and use to members Allan
  5. Hi Ian I'm looking at a boat with a diesel Squirrel - I'd be interested in knowing what sort of fuel consption figures you get as I've heard widely varying figures! Thanks Allan

    Shameful

[ LOL - I like the idea I'm helping a friend who's starting a narrowboat hire business in 2007, and I must confess to pinching a few ideas for an 'etiquette' web page from here: http://www.scottmarine.co.uk/Boat%20etiquette.htm I think I'm going to have a go at producing an web page with tests now! Should be good for a laugh!!! Think I'll include Minerva's example... If someone shouts abuse should you: a) Throw him in the cut? Stick pins in a Voodo replica of his boat? c) Have largest crew member administer a good decking? d) Wait until the offender moors, then sneak aboard and losen the weed hatch? Any more anyone? Allan
  8. Hi Martin I'm sorry to see that you have discovered this forum under unfortunate circumstances - but welcome anyway. I'd like to wish you the very best of luck in recovering your boat quickly - I'm sure that you've come to the right place for support, help and advice. May 2007 start better than 2006 has finished eh? Allan

  12. I lost two mugs last time out so one of these turned up in my prezzies... I can clip it onto the roof rail! Allan

    MULTIMETER

Hear hear Fortunata! I've been an electrician/electrical tech for er... years, but just before Christmas I came across something new to me.... One of the storemen where I work (who we will call Gavin*) had got hold of a multimeter, and complained to me that every time he used it to check a socket (apparently he was decorating and wanted to be check the sockets before papering) he was getting a shock, and all the lights in the house were going out (ie. the RCD was tripping), and could I please take a look at it. He eventually bought it into work last week, and even though it was a cheap one, I couldn't find anything wrong with it... On further investigation it transpired that he had been used to using an old neon screwdriver (where you just touch the screwdriver end to the live) for many years previously... Guess what he'd being doing? He had been holding one of the test probes while touching the other to live!!!! Doh!!! Just goes to show that even the simplest things can be misused! The moral of this story is that if you don't know what you are doing - ASK SOMEONE WHO DOES!!! Allan * name changed to protect the guilty PS - I wonder if I could persuade Gavin* to show my ex wife how to use a multimeter?

  21. Not to mention a small turkey looking somewhat concerned about being bonded to a hull! Allan
  22. Thanks for this one Gary BTW - hadn't been to your site for a while - have to say I like the new design. Well done! Allan
  23. Good idea Daniel... good luck with this May I suggest you add what the traders are offering - eg. general supplies, coal/wood/fuel etc etc Allan
  24. LOL - I know what you mean... most pub music *is* terrible! Not all of the Telfords music is to my taste i admit, but they do have a lot of good blues, acoustic and even folk stuff on here (what's on is on the website) You would have been alright - I've got it on good authority that lions don't like tinned food, though some of the larger apes are apparently quite handy with a tin opener. Mind you if you could tie a couple of those maurauding yobs to the roof - think of the fun you could have re-enacting scenes from ancient Rome... Allan
