  1. Yes I have tried the appliances, tablet not working there either nor the chargers. May not be related to solar panels at all. We rarely charged anything before getting the solar so can't judge it.... Is this a common problem with modified sine wave inverters..
  2. We have recently had solar panels fitted with an MPPT unit, (we have a Trace inverter/charger) since then my tablet has stopped working as have the chargers for our electric toothbrushes. I am presuming they have burnt out due to surges in power, I may be wrong as I am not an expert. As our inverter isn't broken we don't really want to buy a new one, is they some sort of equipment which can regulate the power to prevent any more accidents...
  3. Thanks for the info on kedian engineering, I will contact them. But can anyone recommend anyone on the Leeds liverpool
  4. We have a cruiser stern with the door to one side of the back, with a step down to it. My husband has a bad back and getting on and off is painfull, so I was wondering how feasible it is to put in a sliding hatch and how much do you think it will cost.
  5. Thank you to everybody for your replies, sorry I didn't put enough info on the original post. We live aboard the boat for approx 2 months in the summer and 1 month in the winter. Also we are on a towpath without mains hook up and our Hoover just drains the batteries of which we have 3 leisure. We do have 2 dogs but they like to be outside with us when sailing and in their beds when were moored up, and we have been offered solid oak flooring inc fitting for around £700 which I think is fantastic. So far most of you say wood which is my choice and it now seems it might be my wife's favoured choice too now. Many thanks Rick n Gill Notts o swift
  6. We are newish to owning a canal boat and currently the floor is carpet and it is in need of a change, the thing is we are not to sure wether to just replace carpet with carpet or to go all out for it and have solid oak flooring or even karndean fitted. The flooring under the carpet is chipboard which I know isn't very good and we get a bit concerned about water spillage as there is no underlay or some kind of protective layer and we have already had a small leak on the calorifier tank? What would you all recommend, I know it will be personal preference but all comments will be welcome. Ps, the side walls are also fitted with carpet but a different kind.
  7. We have a bank of 4 x 110amh batteries, but I'm not to sure on the charger size. We have a 2 kW inverter charger. We only run a few lights which all have led bulbs, the tv is led either 12 or 240v but we have no 12 v sockets, also the heating is eberschpacher. Regards Rick n Gill
  8. We are quite new to canal boats and we aim to live aboard our boat Notts O Swift for a month over Xmas, but we doubt we will do much, if any sailing. What I would like advice on is what size and make of Generator we will require, we have a 2 kW inverter, but no washing machine etc. our only electric devices are lights, heating and a modern television. We are open to all advice, but would prefer not to pay silly money. Many thanks Rick n Gill
  9. We are looking at having our 9 year old boat repainted. should we go back to metal or use the existing paint as a base. we have some rust especially around the windows - they will be removed and the rust treated, but we have heard varying opinions on whether to go back to metal or not. any advice would be great.
  10. Hi I would like some advice on our altenator, we have 3x110amh Leisure batteries and the altenator is 70 amp, but after talking to a chap at a chandlers and boat builders we were informed that we need to increase the alternator to one that supplies around 120 amps or more. Is this correct advice or will we be ok by leaving things as we are. We leave the boat an a towpath with no hook up and we start the engine every week or so and leave running for a couple of hours, but we have had a few problems of late and the batteries are less than a year old. All advice will be gladly taken on board Many Thanks Rick n Gill ( Notts o Swift)
  11. we have 3 x 110 amh leisure batteries, what alternator output amps do i need?

  16. i must be doing something wrong as cant access the video. would love to see it as i live in spain, also our boat is at barlic too.
  17. my dads a joiner so i am sure he could adapt one or make one, have loads of photos on google images but was wondering if there are any ready made for boats - really so that i can get dad to copy it - any photos would be appreciated
  18. we are looking at adding a plate rack to our kitchen and was wondering if anywhere sells them, made especially for narrow boats or whether its best to just adapt one.
  19. ours had been fitted in the engine bay and the chap that took it out said it was full of oil and dust and in his opinion it was knackered, perhaps its worth sending off to Sterling.
  20. can anyone recommend an alternative make(ie not stirling) which is reliable and good value
  21. Our stirling inverter blew up and is irreparable, we are new to boating and not sure what we need. we will be living aboard for at least 3 months each year in the winter but at present we are in a marina with a hook up. we are surprised at the cost of a pure sine 2kw inverter/charger especially if we go for another stirling. do we really need a pure sine or will a quasi be ok, need to run a tv and a laptop and other than that just lights etc
  22. thanks everyone, we have spoken to eddie today and just need to see when we can get a poly tunnel, but thanks for all the recommendations
