  1. My link Came across this firewood BTU rating guide t'other day .... might be of interest to some people .... it is american, but a useful site for all sorts of ideas if you are interested in "alternative" / cheap living
  2. thanks for the replies and link to other thread .... which was useful ..... I particularly like the "african fridge" idea and am going to try that .... I also have a friend who is going to give me a large old wet bag and will try that submerged when moored up
  3. Had a little furtle through the forum, and no doubt there is a thread somewhere ..... but Shorter days, less solar, more lights on, not cruising as far etc etc .... so I'm thinking of turning my rather gutsy old 12v fridge off for the winter .... only really use it for milk, cheese and veg. Thinking about some sort of external, rodent proof cool storage, ideally free/recycled/cheap .... does anyone else switch off and if so, what do you use?
  4. mmmm rhubarb vodka .... I am liking the sound of that ... but yes, blackberries and raspberries in gin or vodka .... also try rowan berries and rosehips ... pretty and pink .... have done blackberry whisky a few times too ... use a bit less sugar than for sloe/damson gin etc .... mmm season of mists and mellow fruitfulness .... love autumn

  8. hmmm echo many of the sentiments on here so far .... buy second hand and save the money for early retirement there are many helpful generous people on here who share their experiences.... opportunites for parking up, even in a stealth camper, are limited for any length of time and living on the road in this country is a difficult option really now I juggled a camper and the boat for a while, but was too much of a ball ache in the end, and the camper was standing idle .... but if you have a permanant mooring and a job then that is different .... also see the thread i started on "continuous cruising with a vehicle" for one way of carrying a motorsickle ..... despite the predictions of some, i have not sunk (yet ) and have a safety certificate, and tis easy to get on and off without knackering my back. I find the bike very useful for blatting around to shops etc .... just moor near a bridge and away you go....pushing it along the towpath of course I will be near selby in october and happily have a chatter with you about my limited experiences of living aboard so far .... 9 months .... love it .... and you can moor up pretty much anywhere without hassle, town, village, rural ... wherever .... and after some years living on the road, the space is great

  15. We had a minor knee injury yesterday, whilst moored at cropredy to watch a few fringe events ..... St John's were really helpful, took us up to festival site to see the nurse ... and we "accidentally" left the first aid compound via the festival ... how good were Bellowhead ...... and proper trip down memory lane with Squeeze .... hope you all ok and sorted

  20. hmmm this is probably the guy that was on front page of Tamworth Herald few weeks back ... he was moored by old coal yard, which is pretty secure from road. According to the newspaper (can't find a link sorry)the boat was completely stripped of entire contents .... stove, rads, cooker, bed, pots and pans, all fittings and furniture .... the windows had been spray painted on the inside to allow the skullduggery to take place undetected ... and it appeared the contents had been removed by boat ... and he was offering substantial reward for info Further along at the long term Grendon moorings by CaRT facilities at bridge 48, a number of boats had been broken into and licenses and other stuff stolen. Whilst I had no problems moored there, or in Atherstone, my ambulance was broken into one night parked at bridge 48 ... luckily people in nearby house went to investigate and the tealeaves ran off.
