I will be at Foxton on Swift with the Heritage Working Boat Group feel free to pop along by the top lock and say hello. We decided on Foxton rather than Braunston as it will be easier for the public to get on board. It is always difficult at Braunston to get a bank side mooring which we need for public access.

Incidentally, continuing a trend we had previously noted where Robin Evans appeared informally at a Stoke Bruerne event last year, and was chatting freely to boat owners, Tony Hales was there yesterday for the gala weekend, and doing similar.
I had a chat with Tony Hales at the Droitwich Festival this year when he came strolling along past the boats.

If you make it to Foxton, drop by Swift and say hello. Swift will be open for viewing all weekend.

Thanks for the comments. I am planning a trip to a few brokers, including Rugby Boats, this weekend.

I am after a bit of buying advice, after hiring boats for many years I am considering buying a second hand boat but I am nervous about parting with my hard earned cash. How do buyers generally check ownership of a boat before buying if buying privately and what process is best to use when handing over the payment to make sure the boat is received and the seller doesn't do a runner with my money...? It's not that I don't trust people is just that I don't want to make a stupid mistake and end up with no boat and no savings.
Any advice or other people's experiences welcome.
Thank you.

Simons was soho loop at 5 am
I bet there weren't the 30 - 40 fishermen round the Soho Loop that I encountered last Sunday afternoon when I thought I would take a trip round there. Surprisingly only one gave us some verbal.

Heritage Working Boat Group are taking at least one boat and Joe Hollingshead will be going along on the Nansen as far as I know.

Educating on the history of the canals is what the Heritage Working Boat Group do. As a CRT volunteer group we travel around the Midlands attending events and running school education events with the CRT Explorers to show people working boats and talk to them about the canals and what life was like working on the canals.

In the 60's the normal time was 1hour 50 mins. that was with two people with a pair with 50 tons on board, we used to come down empty in 1hour 40 mins. They were the days, and not another boat in sight all day.
Not wanting to start another gate debate but I expect you didn't close the gates in the 60's when you left a lock.

At a minimum have a carbon monoxide alarm and make sure it is working.

If my numbers come up tonight it would definately be on my short list.

Or wait for the next repeat on Quest as it is regularly repeated, perhaps they may have made enough from repeat showings to cover the fitout costs of Dover.
-
The Heritage Working Boat Group are always happy to welcome new members (www.heritageworkingboats.org.uk). We also assist the CRT Explorers with school events which are a great way of demonstrating working boats to youngsters and showing them how canals work.
It would be good to get some younger volunteers to help with boat moves, educational days and talking to the public at events.

Thank you Rob-M
I dont know if any of you have tried this link but when I try to dig down - search for a boat name or look for a photo etc. The site wont go any further
That will be because I only looked at the top page of the boat listings when I looked at the site on the archive. The code in Jim's site won't work on the archive site so sorry not a good work around.
-
Anyone have the location to insert ?
The web site address for Jim's site is http://www.jim-shead.com. Put this in the Wayback Machine box and click Take Me Back. From the page of dates click a highlighted date to see the web site from that date.
Edited to correct spelling

If you go to the web archive site, http://archive.org/web/web.php you can put in the address for Jim's site and view the boat list.

Hi Rob,
I can see the evets listed on the HWBG events page but as with the HNBC events page it gives no details.
Can anyone send me in the right direction for a link where I can find out more about these events or can anyone share their experience of them in prvious years. The info I am looking for is things like:
How big? How many boats, how many public attend, can you fund raise, have a stall etc. Where can I find contact details for booking? I am familiar with BCLM and how their events tend to be arranged but not the others. I am trying to work out whether we should bring Python to them. I want to try and get her to as many events as possible but towards the end of the season the crew always have an eye on the distance to get her back home with shortening days and colder nights.
I don't have contact details as I just post the event list on our website but the Tipton festival is organised by the Tipton Community Association I think. Last year I believe there was a good public turn out. Windmill End is also popular and that is organised by the Black Country Boating Festival (Link to 2012).
-
I have Windmill End on 14th-15th September then BCLM on 28th 29th September. I just noticed that on the HNBOC diary they mention Tipton for the weekend in between. There are two events on consecutive weekends at BCLM then?
Yes, HWBG will be at Windmill End as well. The Tipton event is out on the Main Line at Coronation Gardens before Tipton Junction rather than in BCLM.
-
I see there is a "Tipton Canal Festival" mentioned in the HNBOC diary on 28th-29th September.
Does anyone have any more information about that event?
The Heritage Working Boat group have an event at The Black Country Living Museum for that weekend. We have Coronation Gardens listed as being the weekend before.
-
The whois lookup shows it as expiring in April, perhaps he is changing hosts as there has been an update to the record today.
-
I assume the one at Kings Norton as well, will check and post
Yes work has already been carried out, it was drained earlier in the year with an open day and a chance for the local school children to take a tour.

You need to carry a short loop of rope and a karabiner to clip round the handrails of the two gates to hold them closed whilst you then walk to the other end and draw the paddles, remembering to go and reclaim your kit once the water is rising.

Hi, which did you prefer, the Avon or Stourport Ring?
Personally the Stourport Ring as there is more canal than river cruising and I prefer being on the canals as sometimes the rivers are high banked and not much to see especially the Severn. We also had time in Birmingham so the kids could go shopping in the Bull Ring which they don't normally get to do when we are out on the canals.
