  3. Zander and pike are both pretty good, but I'm not sure I'd touch much else. My Eastern Bloc friends tell me carp is delicious, but whatever you do don't get nicked taking them. John PS. the chippy is a brilliant alternative....

  5. Absolutely correct Allan. I'd plan at least a fortnight for that trip - there's a hell of a lot of pubs round this area (North Surrey). Don't miss the pub in Kingston which I alluded to in a previous post. Can't for the life of me remember its name, which may have something to do with the amazingly low beer prices. When you get near Walton-on-Thames give me a shout - I'll show you which hostlery to not go in. John

  9. Well, as you say Shazza, you'd never get into the lock. I reckon you must keep your place in the queue and I'm sure other boaters would be quite understanding, I'm on a narrowboat on the Thames at the moment and I frequently have to wait while wide yoghurt pots go through a large lock in single file. That's OK by me, but I hold station and get in as soon as I can. I wouldn't worry too much about the etiquette if I were you. John
  10. That boat'll look superb once it's finished and varnished. I'd definitely give a good home to the dog too - I used to be owned by a lab/whippet cross and he was the best dog ever. I'm guessing this one is a retired greyhound, but lovely nonetheless. John

  14. No problem then:- pins pulled at 7am and lunch at the Anchor. John
  15. I thought canals were exempt from the closed season until I turned up at dawn to fish the Basingstoke one day last May. I'd just got set up and was about to make my first cast when an old dear passing by said "Are you sure you should be fishing? It's just that that notice over there says the season starts on the 16th of next month." I hadn't seen the notice, with its promises of astronomical fines and gear confiscation for anyone caught fishing off season. I thanked her profusely and packed up, to go and spend £10 for a pretty fruitless session on a local commercial gravel pit. John
