  1. I have no intention of towing this on the road without brakes. As my job requires a licence then there is no way I am putting that, myself or others at risk. Looks like I will have to find a new trailer (again) Thanks
  2. Thanks for your help. Yes I got C1+E with 107 code
  3. Hi not sure if this is the right section. I have a 25ft Norman Cruiser which I am taking out of the water for refurbishment. I have bought a 30ft trailer (hitch to end) (26ft from winch post) I have read on Gov.uk web site that the maximum length of trailer must not exceed 7 metres. So I am therefore over this straight away. Also the trailer does not have brakes. Is that ok as it appears it never has. I passed my test in 1991 so have the B+E but can not find any information on what to do for my trailer that's over 7 metres. Anyone know? Thanks
  4. I have both options but as the batteries are flat I tried to pull start it. I assume it was the starter I removed it is a black retangle shaped piece with a spring and cog poking out the top end and a wire underneath. It is fitted with 2 bolts and only goes in one way.
  5. Hi all. I have a Mercury 9.9hp 2 stroke engine which I had running problems with last year. I have removed and cleaned the carb and had to remove what I think is the starter motor. I have put it all back together but now when I pull the cord to start the engine there is a loud grinding noise. It sounds like something may have dropped down or come out and is not sitting correctly. As I don't know much about boats I don't want to start taking things apart until I know what I should be looking for. Any ideas what this is and how to fix it?
  6. Not yet had a good squirt with carb cleaner and still not running properly so brought engine home but was working away in Cambridge last week and next week so if I get chance will strip carb down next weekend.
  7. I plan on fitting a new larger fuel tank to our 25ft Norman cruiser. Can I fit an electrical fuel gauge into the tank (like on a car) or will I fall foul of a BSS check. Planning on fitting sender unit into the tank which will need to be cut and an electrical gauge to the dash.
  8. Thank you. Just off to specsavers as I looked through this before but could not see anything relating to tank size but now I have.
  9. Thanks will have a look for some glue. Wire will only reach to certain parts so the connection is limited to certain parts. Yes the water flows out of the engine. Just would like the gauge to work as it's fitted even if it is a waste of time it is at the end of a day a boys toy.
  10. Is there a limit on the size of fuel tank you are allowed to have? We currently have I think a 5 litre tank but would like a bigger one. I understand it needs to be enclosed and vented to the outside world. Forgot to say we have a 25ft Norman cruiser running a 2 stroke Mercury engine if this matters
  11. It has worked in the past, just can't see where it would connect to to get a signal
  12. Thanks would prefer a 4 stroke as not seen another 2 stroke and it is quite noisy when running. Plugs were in a bad way and ave fitted new to see if that was a cause for the bad running but it wasn't. Are 4 strokes better on fuel as I seem to use quite a lot.
  13. No idea what you mean on your last post. But I was thinking the choke could be sticking. On the side of the carb are some metal rod linkages. When I pull on the choke on the lever box it opens the choke a small bit but not as wide as the choke fitted to the engine. The throttle opens things up quite a bit. When I go up the boat next to have a fiddle around will get some photos to make things easier. Thanks for your help.
  14. It has fresh fuel and tank is clean, will try and bypass the plastic filter thing and see if that helps. It was ticking over quite nicely for ages by itself without the choke but when we went into drive it cut out and would then only run with the choke out and as time went on you could feel it getting slower not that it was going fast before. Thanks for help
  15. Didn't notice an air filter, unless it is not fitted to the inlet bit of the carb like it would be on a car. Carb inlet (I assume) where the butterfly flap is, is sideways on my engine or would it be under the pull cord thing. Sorry don't know the names of the parts yet.
  16. The temp gauge has stopped working. After looking around the engine area there are two wires (white & red) connected together into a female spade connector but I cannot see anywhere to plug it into. Engine is a Mercury 2 stroke 9.9. Gauge does work as when I touch the connector to a bolt the gauge reads highest temp. Thanks
  17. The Osprey when we first bought it.
  18. Thanks for that. Checked fuel strainer thing in tank and is clean. Plastic fuel bowl thing has petrol and you can see petrol going in after I emptied a bit out but there did seem to be some bits in it. Fuel getting to carb as it sprayed my face when I pulled pipe off. Will try some carb cleaner and see what happens.
  19. Thanks for reply, will have a look at that website. Did think fuel problem and had a rumage around but nothing obvious.
  20. Just joined and fairly new to boating, but have owned our current boat for 3 years now and have been improving it all the time. However after this years trip the engine has given us a problem. It's a Mercury 2 stroke 9.9. The problem is it has trouble ticking over and if I can get it to tickover it won't drive without the choke, if you push the choke in it will stall. Have removed the engine cover and taken a look but not seeing much. I am quite willing to fiddle around with the engine but never worked on a boat engine before. We have decided to carry out a few jobs on the boat ready for next year, New paint, graphics and a few other things so it looks even better as the inside is complete. We are thinking of a new engine but if we can't afford one then we will have to keep this one. Anyway my questions........ What is wrong with our engine? Is it worth repairing? Is there a better engine? (I know there is but which one) What is the largest fuel tank we can fit? What is the best paint for glassfibre? Thanks in advance
  21. Thanks for welcomes. Should be ok then we have a toilet and sorted our moorings. However I do have lots of questions ready for our boats refurb.
  22. Just signed up and thought I'd say Hi We have a 25ft Norman cruiser on the Monmouthshire & Brecon canal
